Well, tomorrow being Sunday, I is already thinking about Church, (trying to get most of my dirty deeds done today) Does anybody have a favorite of one of the song types listed above? Maybe a Civil War Hymn, whatever You likes......Thanks......joe

I have had this song in my head as far as I know it's the only take and only performance, it was a rehearsal.
"Yonder Comes Sin " Killer Stones kinda groove .

Spirit in the Sky by Norman Greenbaum.

Also enjoy listening on You Tube to Jo Stafford's Old Rugged Cross. Jo was one of the favorite female singers by our Armed Forces during World War 2. There is a fantastic version of Blue Moon by Jo on YouTune too..Her voice and phrasing and the guy on Trombone are excellent.

My very first thought regarding this.

And then there is "Oh, Happy Day" by the Edwin Hawkins Singers. Utter joy!

I love many a blues tune that has a religious theme, but the song that jumped in my head initially is from Elvis Presley.

Working On A Building

It never gets tired, tired, tired.

I know Emmylou co-wrote this with GP but I thought Linda Ronstadt did the harmony vocals? Bernie Leadon plays some great dobro on this.

Great song.

Yes, several, but one that sticks out as a particularly stunning performance is How Great Thou Art > The Old Rugged Cross from his Ridin’ Mighty High album.

That's the Way God Planned It, Billy Preston
A Song I Haven't Sung, Lonnie Mack
My Jesus Told Me So, MTB
Jesus Is Just Alright, Doobies
Give Me Strength, Eric Clapton

Almost an Angel, from the Original Gangstas soundtrack
most anything from Motel Shot

Speaking of Bonnie, the gospel tunes she, Dickey, Gregg & others did during an April 1979 radio broadcast were powerful, especially
"I am a big Jesus fan
...now Jesus, there was a man"

Like to add Van Morrision's "Whenever God Shines His Light". Then again Van's catalogue is full of songs that are rich in spirit.

My all time favorite is "Be Thou My Vision" but here's a recent song:

The Civil Wars: From This Valley - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzTmIremxp4

I was sad when they broke up.

Pretty much the entire Jack Pearson catalog.
This is one that is a part of every show he does.
"Just Believe"
Trust in the Lord, he will watch over you.
But my eyes were so blind that I could not see.
And then he showed me, what he had for me to do.
He said be still, here I am, I'll take care of you
I will take care of you.
Just believe.
Just believe.
Let it all go,
Just believe.

I am spiritual, have definite opinions on religion, and politics, but I tend to never discuss any of that stuff with people, as nobody ever agrees with me, nor me with them. And like Robert Johnson at the crossroads, the devil pops up more in my music than the Good One.

I like the traditional old school gospel religious music. Can't go wrong with any of that! Great Stuff.I
On our Saturday service at church we have a couple of guys that play this stuff on acoustic guitars in a c/w style and they got great voices that just nail that old time feel.

Just a few off the top of my head

Old Rugged Cross
How great thou art
In the garden
What a friend we have in Jesus
Take my handle previous Lord
Break Bread Together
Sweet Hour of Prayer
Nothing But The Blood
Nearer My God to the
The Battle Hymn of the Republic
I Love to Tell The Story
What a Friend we have in Jesus
