2019 marks the 30th anniversary of THE CULT's seminal album "Sonic Temple". To celebrate the anniversary, Beggars Arkive will release "The Cult: Sonic Temple 30" on September 13. It will be released as a deluxe box set and a 5-CD set, plus the label will reissue "Sonic Temple" on double LP, which has been out of print for over 20 years. The sets both contain limited-release demos in addition to previously unreleased tracks. (Full details and track listings are below.) Preorders are available here.

Originally released in 1989, "Sonic Temple" proved to be a pivotal moment for both the band and the wider rock scene. Produced by the legendary Bob Rock, "Sonic Temple" had four chart-topping singles: "Fire Woman", "Edie (Ciao Baby)", "Sun King" and "Sweet Soul Sister".

In a recent interview about the album, vocalist Ian Astbury explained how the band brought together hard rock and indie rock to create the unique, game-changing sounds on "Sonic Temple". "We wanted to retain our core DNA as we went deeper into psych and hard rock influences," he said. "It was a complete immersion for me into art, film, music, poetry and literature, weaving those influences into what was to become 'Sonic Temple'. The band was becoming more popular. We were in uncharted waters. Most of the bands we had come up with had split up or fallen off. We were accelerating. There was no real time to breathe. We were forming new allegiances and breaking the glass ceiling of 'the indie outsider.'"

The album catapulted THE CULT into superstar status and remains their most commercially successful release. It has sold over 1.5 million copies in the U.S. alone and was certified platinum in 1990. It made it to No. 10 on the Billboard charts, and the aforementioned songs all remain rock-radio staples to this day.

The box set contains three pieces of vinyl and a cassette plus tour memorabilia and ephemera (replica of original laminate, backstage pass, original press releases, label copy and more). It's numbered and limited to 3000 pieces worldwide and contains 40 tracks, four of which were previously unreleased. LP1+2 contain the album as originally released. LP3 contains "Live At Wembley" recorded by the BBC, and the included cassette contains limited-release demos. Four of the live tracks are also previously unreleased.

The five-CD set contains 53 tracks (including six previously unreleased) with the original album on disc 1, alternate edits, mixes, extended versions and acoustic versions on disc 2, limited-release demos on discs 3 and 4 and "Live At Wembley" recorded by the BBC on disc 5. Six of the live tracks are previously unreleased. It is beautifully packaged in book form with rare photographs and interviews with the band by esteemed U.K. journalist James Brown.

The double LP is a re-vamped reissue of the original album. Now cut onto two pieces of black vinyl, the audio is improved and contains 16 tracks total, which comprise the original album plus six B-sides. It's been out of print for over 20 years.

The digital version will replicate the CD-set but excludes the original album for a total of 43 tracks.

I think the Cult snuck under the gates as an "indie outsider" just by dressing cool.

To be fair, I never heard their very early stuff, but when I first heard their album "Love," which was indeed a "college radio" album. I shrugged and said "It sounds more like someone borrowing from U2 than someone really doing something alternative."

Their album after that, "Electric," which I love, still somehow had them wearing the "alt rock" label, but the album itself is pure classic rock. It is incredibly derivative, yet I always found it enjoyably so. We would listen to each song and call out which part sounded like AC/DC, which part sounded like Bad Co., which part sounded like Led Zep, which vocals lines sounded like The Doors, and which were the dumbest lyrics.

Because their lyrics are insanely dumb. Awesome dumb. Spinal Tap dumb. Like if we sat down to write parody lyrics mocking Jim Morrison dumb. But so rocking.

Air guitar music for sure. CRANK IT UP. But don't sweat the lyrics.

"Aphrodisiac Jacket" - by The Cult

Ow, ow, ow
Sittin' on a mountain, looking at the sun
Plastic fantastic lobster telephone

Drive on baby, through the electric night
All the way sister, in the taxi of life
Cookin' in the kitchen, insects on the bone
Hazy, lazy, dream world drippin' on

Waitin' for a time bomb, yeah, tick tick tick away
Somethin' on the radio, yeah yeah, drip drip drip all day, yeah

Drive on baby, through the electric night
All the way sister, in the taxi of light
The sunshine glows, but nobody knows
The nighttime's gone, keep drivin' on, yeah

Aphrodisiac jacket
Napoleon machine gun
Livin' on a subway, yeah yeah
From dusk till dawn, yeah
Push…

To each they're own .....

I have never been one to get hung up on lyrics, analyze them, taking them seriously,etc...

It's about having fun..

As long as it rocks, swings, makes you tap your toes play some air drums and guitars that's fine with me.

Most rock music lyrics are dopey so The Cult are not unique in that respect.

Jim Morrison's lyrics in many cases were just as nonsensical as are Plant's Zep lyrics.

As far as being derivative, what rock band is not derivative?

Billy Duffy writes some great rock hooks and love his tone. Very underrated guitarist IMO.

Sonic Temple has some classic anthems so will be buying the vinyl for sure. Maybe the 5CD set just for the live CD as I already have the two OOP box sets of Demos
.

They will sell 100 of them. Cool for the diehards but aside from them.

Milking the two commercial successful albums to the end.

Ceremony has some good tunes on it.

After that some of they're stuff is hit or miss/here and there. I still follow them and pay attention to new releases.

You must not be a fan as they have a pretty hardcore loyal fan base. This deluxe box certainly is not a gold record seller but it should sell about average for this type of classic rock deluxe box set from an old band like The Cult.

As far as reissueing their old albums, now I know you are not a fan as just about every classic rock band is doing the same thing to "milk" their old albums including the ABB. There is no money in new music so the old bands and record labels are scrapping the bottom of the barrel with deluxe sets including demos and live tracks to entice us fans to buy stuff we already own.

the bands last 2 albums are good enough that the best tracks combined would probably be the bands best album

You guys are sensitive. I never said to not release it. Hell release a 20 disc version of a 45 minute album. lol

It is overkill and will appeal to a select few.

Have seen then and met them before any fame. The hardcore loyal fanbase has not bought their new stuff in a long time. One recent release had under 2000 units in US sales months after it's release. So as much as Matt may like it, no one else cared enough to buy new stuff.

Again guys - go buy it. By all means, I can't see any of you shelling out for a 5 lp/5cd/Digital album but I could be wrong. Maybe Matt will line up or pre-order?

And yes everyone milks their successful releases. Not faulting The Cult and never said I didn't like them.

Milking the 2 albums. They have before and will again. Get ready for the 10 lp/10 cd version.

yeah not sure what was with the sales of the bands last album in 2016. it was not good. the album before that though in 2012 has i believe about 15,000 in sales which is why the drop off in 2016 was a shocker

Not being sensitive mate just responding to your post which was a bit exaggerated and negative towards the band for no apparent reason. It seemed to make you angry for some reason. Makes me wonder what they did to earn your wrath.

The Cult and their label are doing exactly what many classic rock bands are doing. Repackaging their old albums to entice us fans to buy them again. Jimmy Page has made a living doing this with milking the Led Zeppelin legacy.

Even the ABB do this with their deluxe sets. Since you are on this forum I am sure you know how many times and variation of the Fillmore East album was released. I know because I have bought many the different CD and vinyl releases looking for the best sounding version.

And I may buy the Deluxe ST but since I already own the two Cult OOP Demo box sets, which are fantastic IMHO, it may not be worth it to me. But to Cult fans who don't own the Demo boxes this may be an attractive release.

Personally I am happy bands and labels are releasing these Deluxe box sets as it gives us fans access to unreleased material so hope they keep em coming.

That statement is full of wrath? Man you would hate to see me really mad then.

exaggerated? What part? The sales? I bet I will come real close. Their last "single" disc release barely cracked a thousand in the US. You think some huge box set with a high price tag will sell more? Not a chance especially as anyone curious for the out takes and demos can get it on Spotify for free.

Then you actually prove my point about milking when you mention already having a box set with much of this stuff.

Again I said nothing negative or hateful and definitely no wrath. LOL

Will sell a hundred - check
For the die hards - check
Milking the same material they already have - check

Again buy it if you like. I fully support your desires.

Not a thing. In fact they were nice guys especially Matt Sorum.

The great part about Sonic Temple is the session guitarists that put solos and melody parts that are in the right key. Electric while rocking has some pretty out of key guitar solos.

Never said they were not milking their past releases just as every classic rock band does including the Allman Brothers Band.

You are right I own two large box sets of Demos, 12 CD's worth, which I am sure sold over 100 units each and are OOP and sold out years ago as far as I can determine so I think your claim of Sonic Temple 30 only selling 100 units will be little light. I will take your word for it that their last single album release sold 1000 units in the US but then again you are only looking at the US yes?

IMO fans are more likely to buy a the box set of the bands most famous album, which sold 1.5 million copies in the US, if it includes 4 CD's worth of live and demo material. It may just appeal to those fans who missed out on the Demo boxes but we will see.

The price for the 5 CD version on one website I found is only 35 GBP or $43 US so not that crazy expensive. I do agree the 3LP/ Cassette version is a bit expensive and most likely only for hardcore fans and you may be right they may only sell several hundred Worldwide.

http://www.superdeluxeedition.com/news/the-cult-sonic-temple-30th-anniversa ry-expanded-sets/

In any case I respect your right to complain about the milking of the album and not buy it. If I did not have the Demo boxes I would have bought it for sure so that would only leave 100 more to go to eclipse your prediction of 100.

The main reason that it won't sell except to die hards - these box sets are free on Spotify.

It is cool to hear demos and other rarities but is it all good enough to own? How often can you play it? Especially if you have a large music collection. The industry has changed and these bands are selling to people 40+ who still want a hard copy.

You seem to think I am arguing or full of wrath. LOL - i haven't claimed that you claimed anything. You tried to make more of two simple statements that are valid andbturn it into some hate indused rant.

I am not. Having nothing at all against The Cult aside from some bum notes here and there all over Electric. LOL - kudos for leaving them I guess.
