I have to wonder how many of the people complaining about these monuments being removed actually knew who were on the monuments before the publicity. Most probably passed by the monument every day and had no idea who it was and never cared. Then one day someone wants to remove a Confederate monument and all of a sudden they are outraged. People complaining that they are erasing history for a lesson they never learned in the first place.

Brer - a lot of my comment before was in jest. I'ma moderate; and currently thing that the polar divide in the country is out of control.

I have never seen the country this divided. People blame Trump; but his election was the effect not the cause. Trump & Bernie both garnered huge amounts of support - their extreme views mirroring the dissatisfaction many Americans feel.

Can't stand neo-nazi's; also can't stand when a Broadway Show (Natasha and the Comet) closes because their is an uproar about replacing an actor of color with a white one (in an attempt to save the show) or when an actor signed to play a character in the new Hellboy movie is being let go due to an uproar about a Caucasian playing a half-Asian character. Not to mention the re-assignment of Asian sportscaster Robert Lee from the Charlottesville football game.

The country is nuts; out of control. My late dad (RIP) used to say that people only tslk sbout sex and money when they don't have enough. Well our country no longer has the financial resources to support everyone. Hence it is crumbling before our eyes

Appreciate that - yeah I got your humor , pretty good really. Seems like everyone's just going nuts. The issues are certainly important, and heavy stuff is going down, but it seems like we are all getting yanked around almost like a formula - happens over and over and gets reflected here, but I gotta say the dialogue here beats anything else I have seen for independent thought.

America will pull thru man, but just in case the switch gets thrown tomorrow gotta say I consider everyone here a brother and a teacher, and its been good to hang out with you all.

Nice statement, changed a word or two to fit the opposite argument:

quote:
I have to wonder how many of the people complaining about these monuments still being there actually knew who were on the monuments before the publicity. Most probably passed by the monument every day and had no idea who it was and never cared. Then one day someone tells them they should remove a Confederate monument and all of a sudden they are outraged. People complaining that they are honoring history for a lesson they never learned in the first place.

True enough, and let's not forget that some hate-filled Nazis brought the issue to the front page when they marched to defend these statues, and one of the Nazi terrorists killed someone (followed by Trump defending "some" of the Nazis).

University Of Maryland Will No Longer Play ‘Maryland, My Maryland’ At Events

quote:
BALTIMORE (WJZ) — The University of Maryland’s marching band will no longer play “Maryland, My Maryland,” the official state song of Maryland, at school sporting events because of its ties to the Confederacy.

On Monday, the University of Maryland shared that its marching band has cut the Southern-leaning state song from its line-up. After the deadly rallies in Charlottesville, the controversial anthem will no longer be playing on the university’s campus at all.

The song is a nine-verse war poem, put to music. It was used as a pro-Confederate battle hymn and talks of spurning the “Northern scum.”

Click here for the full lyrics for “Maryland, My Maryland.”

“To be honest, I don’t even know what the tune is. I’d be more upset if they didn’t play the fight song, I think,” said University of Maryland student, Chris Rogers.

Another student said that they didn’t think people would even notice.

Maryland lawmakers however, will certainly notice just as they did in 2016 when they launched into debates on to how to handle the pro-confederate tune.

University spokesperson Katie Lawson released the following statement:

“As part of the university’s efforts to reaffirm our values as a campus community, we are assessing the songs that are played at Intercollegiate Athletic events. We are suspending the playing of “Maryland, My Maryland” to evaluate if it is consistent with the values of our institution at this time.”

With arguments that ultimately lead nowhere except for the wake of deadly white supremacy rallies in Charlottesville, there is the question if “Maryland, My Maryland” could be headed for the history books.

“I think it’s a little absurd to what lengths people are going to. They’re going to ban songs. They’re going to ban everything,” said student Monica Alston.

Another student, Cheyenne Jones, opposingly feels that doing away with the song is better.

“It makes more sense than trying to change lyrics to an old song anyway.”

In the past, Governor Hogan has pushed back against efforts to change the state song. In 2015, the university removed the name of a former school president and segregationist from it’ stadium.

Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh had the city’s four Confederate monuments removed earlier this month.

The music sounds just like O Christmas Tree, the band just plays the music. Only a few verses are ever song, most don't sing at sporting events. What's next...the national anthem, some push for just that... the way things are going can't say I'd be all that surprised.

Trump doesn't like the anthem. Wants to know why people keep asking "Jose can you see?"

Until recently, there was a Confederate monument on a major thoroughfare in KC. Called Ward Parkway, there's two lanes going one way, two lanes going the other with large swatches of grass between them, with random fountains, sculptures and benches. This particular monument wasn't one that you could read by driving by. Concrete column in the middle about six feet high with concrete benches on both sides. Placed there in the 1930s by the Daughters of the Confederacy, the large letters read "In Memory of the Women of the Old South."

I figured that I've driven past it hundreds of times in little over thirty years. I never knew what it said or what it was. In those thirty years though, I read and studied about all kinds of things, including the Civil War. That monument had zero impact on me, my life, or any of the choices I've ever made. Didn't make me smarter (or dumber) about history. Now that it's gone, the impact on me (and let's be honest, everyone else) remains the same. Zero.

How about the millions of conservatives who popped blood vessels in their head on a daily basis for 8 straight years because of the big bad boogeyman Obama? Talk about being easily offended. If you think this trait exists more on one side than the other, you'd be sadly mistaken.

I beg to differ. I air "grievances" with viewpoints and ideologies that I disagree with. I don't belittle members here, I don't call names either. I have extremely thick skin and happen to see things differently than quite a few peeps here; it's all about the presentation of thought, some of which may be quite the opposite of yours. So be it.
