When you were in Macon, do you remember WNEX radio? It's back as an oldies FM station 100.8 FM. Some 60's, a lot of 70's, 80's and 90's.

Back in the day we listened to a lot of 8 tracks and 96 rock out of Atlanta when we could get it. I remember hooking up a big Sansui receiver to the cable coax and finally being able to pull in 96 rock during daylight hours.

Times sure have changed.

Seemed like every big city had a really good rock radio station.

When driving across country, which I did a lot of in the past, whenever getting close to a new city, I'd start scanning for their rock station.

I do remember going to Atlanta or driving through and picking up 96 Rock.

I grew up on the radio outskirts of Cleveland, so for us it was WMMS Home of the Buzzard. You could only pick it up from my hometown occasionally, but when we drove closer to Cleveland, we tuned it in religiously.

These days, I know I am preaching to the choir, radio sucks.

If I spent any appreciable amount of time in my vehicle anymore, I'd subscribe to XM or Sirius or whatever it is these days.

I have had Siruis XM for 2 + years. Its amazing how with all these channels you still cant find something to listen to.

plus there are plenty of commercials mixed in now as well .

I've had XM ever since I first discovered it in 2002. I wouldn't be without it, although I do understand what you mean about not finding anything to listen to, but that all depends on your taste. To my ear there are way too many hip hip, electronica, and Latin music stations. They are a little light on jazz and blues. Bluesville is pretty good, but not nearly as good as when Bill Wax was running it. And Real Jazz has some fine moments, but it is hit or miss most of the time. I enjoy some of the talk stations, especially the NPR channels, which I think there are three. I avoid the "artist" stations (Buffett, Springsteen, Dead, Petty, etc.) as they get boring real fast.

The only way I know to always get the music you want is to plug your iPod into the aux jack. I often do this and put the iPod on shuffle. Then I imagine that it is my own radio program and I am selecting the tracks. And I envision all of the people listening in appreciation of the fine playlist. I imagine I get faithful listeners calling in to tell me how great my radio show is. But in reality it's just me and my iPod. And my imagination.

Keep your eyes on the road and your hands upon the wheel.

When I moved from Georgia to the panhandle of Florida I used to catch WABB out of Mobile at night. This was 1976 or 1977. That station also turned me on to some real good music. Again I could only bring it in late at night. The only places to see concerts, other than traveling to New Orleans, were Mobile and Dothan. I saw some surprisingly good shows in those cities.

At the old house we had in Macon, my brother and I put one of those old jeans stretchers on top of the barn and ran antenna wire to an old "console" AM radio. We picked up WLS in Chicago and a lot of stations from Tennessee, Florida, and even Arkansas. Also got a whole lot of Spanish stations from Cuba and Mexico.
If you remember Bill Elder, one of the major dj's on WNEX, he's now on 94.7.
Hamp "Killer B" Swain (WIBB) is still around. He helped get Pearly in the Ga Music Hall of Fame.

Correction on the WNEX-FM frequency, it's 100.9 FM.

WNEX-AM is still around, but it's a Radio Disney station.

96.1 was fun to listen to, but in Macon you could just pick it up if you were parked near the fall line close to the Museum of Arts and Sciences on Vineville if you were in your car.

radio
Clear Channel
Ticketmaster / Live Nation

Add one:

PAYING to STREAM music - and then those same ripoff artists turn around and SCREW the artists by NOT paying THEM.

Thank GOD for strong women like Taylor Swift. She's got more balls than almost any man in the music biz. Imagine having the clout to get Apple to back down - on anything.

Respect is owed.

Ticketmaster / Live Nation
Paying to Stream Music when the artist doesn't get their share

Don't know where you live Pops, but here around Macon we still have djs that do live shows, and plays what he listeners want.

While I'm traveling,I put MP3s on a flashdrive and choose what I want to hear, when I want to hear it .
Started one flashdrive leaving St. Augustine and it finished when I pulled off I-75 in Macon.

Clear Channel sucks big time.

In Chicago we have WXRT, which is still pretty good - a lot of variety. I especially like their Saturday Morning Flashback - they pick a year and play 3 hours of music from that year, talk about the movies then, who died then, important news stories, etc. I think you can listen at wxrt.com. When I am in my car I have 30 GB of music on my ipod touch and just put it on shuffle......

I am driving to Wanee again this year....... the ipod will get a good workout..........

Sang, I started listening to 'XRT when they only broadcasted from 12 AM until 6 AM and only in mono....like Dan's post above, first time I ever heard Mountain Jam broadcast in its entirety over the radio was on 'XRT. It was truly an underground station back then.
