I mean, really, have you seen the latest print issue? They've wasted over twelve pages
on - get this - the Allmans' final show at the Beacon, obits on Jack Bruce and Paul Revere,
a Bob Seger interview and, worst of all, a cover story on a bunch of lousy songs Bob Dylan
recorded over a hundred years ago in a pink house in upstate New York with a disreputable
group of unwashed Canadian hillbillies. Good Lord, what a waste of paper.....tell me about
Ariana Grande, Pharrell, Selena and the Beebs - who cares about those old people?!

Sounds to me like they might've finally gotten back on track. I've been using RS for parakeet cage liner, fish wrap and double-ply substitute for the last 10 years or so.

I appreciate your humor and it's good to see someone giving a positive review here. I think it's a great magazine, but yeah, I noticed, too, that this issue was particularly good. And you didn't even mention Matt Taibbi's amazing expose of how Chase got away with murder after the 2007 financial collapse. I posted that article in Whipping Post recently if anyone cares to read it. Look for JP Morgan Chase in the title.

one of the most important bands in the history of modern bands calls it quits after 45 years and they give them half a page?????? not enough old people left. different demographic now. the article was obligatory, not from the soul. the allman brothers band played out 6 shows from the soul. rolling stone reports from the pockets. Rolling SOUL LESS!

Ya sure it was free?

Cause it might have been embedded in the fees if you didn't check a certain box off in the order....

I subscribed to RS back in the mid to late 70s, about my only genuine source for info about the bands I liked. As me if I remember how much I ignored and disliked the articles about bands from the 50's back then.....Every generation has music it feels changed the scene, face it, we're gettin' old and the stuff we listen to does not appeal much to today's buyers.

You're either blind or too dumb to turn the page. It was a full two pages, including a picture on the first one that took up half the page. And the reviewer, David Fricke, was very knowledgeable and complimentary about the band. But some people will go to ANY lengths to criticize RS. Why, I have yet to understand.

That is the sad fact . And that isn't going to change. We are no longer their primary demographic.

Nevertheless, I have been subscribing for the past few years and with a $19.00 a year renewal rate, I still found the magazine worth my time. This year, for the first time, the rate went up to $29.00 and so far, I've balked at renewing.

I may just start reading it at the library as I am becoming more and more annoyed at the clutter that keeping all the back issues is creating in my life.

I agree that David Fricke is a great reviewer though.

I let my long-time subscription die several years ago when RS seemed to have become the Lady Gaga Monthly. The last several issues were just heavily laden with stories about her. When my final issue arrived, I made and won a bet with my wife: "I'll bet there's a picture of Lady Gaga within the first 10 pages", I wagered. I won easily - she was on page 3 - and about 12 more times throughout the issue.

Glad to see they had the decency and respect to honor the Allman Brother's Band at their swan song.

DarylM is right that the last print issue was pretty darn good. Seeing that picture from the Beacon made dropping a deuce that much more enjoyable.

When someone tells flat out LIES in order to support his "beloved allman brothers band", he (she?) deserves exactly the kind of response I gave. larzv said, "one of the most important bands in the history of modern bands calls it quits after 45 years and they give them half a page??????"

The story was a full 2 pages long with 1/2 of the first page devoted to a photograph from the final night @ The Beacon. I'm a subscriber and the issue is right here right next to my computer. Why does someone need to lie in order to criticize a magazine such as Rolling Stone? THAT my friends is the six million dollar question.

I just saw a piece highlighting how a RS article brought visibility to on campus rape issues at the Univ. of Virginia. And due to the RS article, UVA administration has suspended all frat activities and are investigating how to change the culture. So, I would say that RS is still relevant and putting resources toward socially important issues. You could say that it is one of the last media institutions willing to invest in investigative resources. While I often find there articles a little heavy handed and one sided (sometimes like Fox News), I think RS brings light to many issues that would remain dark without them questioning what is going on. While RS spends much of it time covering music I don't care about, I do realize they need to replace an aging reader base and cover what sells. And I will put up with that to get exposed to new great music, learn more about rock legends, guidance on new movies, and the occasion piece that really makes me think and potentially has such an impact to change our large social institutions. What else can you ask for?

One question to folks critical of RS. Who would you rather see photos of poolside...Rihanna or Steven Tyler? Unfortunately, I think I have seen both in the same RS issue. I know I don't need to see any more pics of Steven.

That photo demonstrating Rhianna's beauty will haunt my dreams...

That photo of Steven will no doubt induce nightmares ...
