I had a lot of the players on this page and previous ones as well rookie cards as a kid.

when we moved I was around 16 or so and threw 'em all away.

must've had 200 of them.

makes me sick.

ADDIE JOSS
1902-10, Cleveland (AL)
Only HOFer who played less than 10 years in big leagues
160-97 career W-L, 1.89 career ERA
for many years he stood alone w/his career average of less than 1 walk per inning
died at age 31 of tuberculosis
W/Ty Cobb in Cleveland uniform, memorial/benefit game played later in tribute to Addie
"The memory of Addie Joss is sacred to everyone with whom he ever came in contact. The man never wore a uniform who was a greater credit to the sport than he." Washington Senators manager Jimmy McAleer.

There's no reference to it online that I saw, but Tribe 1st baseman Fred Whitfield was a Yankee killer -- known for wreaking havoc on NYY pitching -- darn good player -- Tribe had him, Rocky C. DaddyWags, Sudden Sam, other good players -- but couldn't win

The diminutive 'Little Professor' -- 5-9, 168 lbs of CF/hitting dynamite
Poor man's Yankee Clipper? No way -- .298 BA in 13-yr career which, like Bob Feller, Ted Williams & others, was interrupted in its prime by 3 yrs of military service
Despite an energetic effort on his behalf by Ted in the 1990s, is not in the HOF

Same thing -- solid 11 yr career, not quite the younger-brother act Dom was but a good player in his own right/on his own merits etc

Billy C
5 years in the bigs, best season 1970 w/Sox -- .271 BA, 18HR, 58 RBI
Billy played very briefly at the end of his career (1973) w/the eventual WS Oakland A's
they were managed by Dick Williams
Tony C disliked Williams intensely & minced 0 words to that effect in his book "Seeing It Through" from a few years earlier...

gosh they had Denny McClain, Bert Campaneris, Billy Williams, Billy C -- many greats played on those teams at the end of their careers -- Billy C I know is not a 'great' in those terms

Along w/Eddie Plank/Chief Bender, Spahn & Sain, Big Unit & Schilling w/AZ in 1990s onanon, probably the greatest tandem ever -- they even negotiated their contracts in tandem

Ken Forsch after no-hitting Atlanta in the second game of the 1979 season. To the right is Larry Dierker, Astros broadcaster who had fired the most recent Astro no-no against Montreal three years earlier.

I remember that too; and if Sudden Sam had stayed away from the sauce things might have been different

Perfect illustration of the Tom Seaver "drop and drive" pitching mechanics.

After picketing the entrance to Fenway, fans show their disgust "on this day" in 1969 after Ken "The Hawk" Harrelson was traded/exiled to Cleveland. Hawk was almost as popular as Yaz was after Ken's big year in 1968. Hawk was as pissed as the fans were about it & briefly retired. He eventually agreed to go to Cleveland but not without hard feelings, also Sox fans. It was pretty much the end of his career
