Anyone who is a regular at The Allman Brother's annual Beacon run is surely familiar with Big Nick's Burger Joint & Pizza Joint on Broadway & 77th Street. At least that is where it use to be. Unfortunately, Nick lost his lease after a long battle with his landlord and closed earlier this week. I'll post a link below to the story, or I'll at least try to.

Big Nick's Closes After 51 Years
By Emily Frost on July 29, 2013 11:57am | Updated on July 29, 2013 11:57am

Big Nick's is bowing out.

The 51-year-old neighborhood favorite Big Nick's Burger Joint and Pizza Joint closed Monday morning, with a sign to customers posted outside saying the eatery at West 77th Street and Broadway could not afford a rent hike.

"We cannot handle an increase from $42,000 to $60,000++ a month for 1,000 square feet," wrote owner Nick Imirziades, citing a failed two-year-long lease negotiation that he described as "difficult and torturous."

Lophijo Realty Corp., the owner of the building that houses Big Nick's, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

"It's a shame it's a New York institution," said local resident Steve Greenwald, 70, who said he'd ordered in burgers or had gone to Big Nick's for years and appreciated the restaurant's value.

"This is what's happening on the Upper West Side. Places keep closing. It will probably be replaced by a chain."

Hundreds of commenters lauded Big Nick's on its Facebook site, with nostalgic musings on their favorite dishes from chicken parmigiana to simple bacon, egg and cheese on a roll.

Many said the closing marked a loss of New York City's heart and soul.

"The very best of Old NYC is slowly going away due to greed, and it makes me really sad," wrote Diane Russell.

Imirziades could not be reached for comment, but in his sign to patrons he referenced a possible relocation "uptown," without getting into more specific plans.

One possible new location could be somewhere between West 96th and West 100th streets, Imirziades told the West Side Rag.

Last summer, the City Council passed a resolution to limit the size of stores along Columbus and Amsterdam avenues as a way of keeping out large chain stores and protecting mom-and-pop businesses.

A sad day. On my first Beacon visit in '07 (for 4 consecutive shows), I ate breakfast at Nick's 4 mornings in a row. Surprisingly affordable, and I swear they had the most employees per square foot as I have ever seen in any business!

So glad I got to take in Nick's and Yogi's on that visit.

Me too Brock. Yogi's and Big Nick's were regular hangouts for me during Beacon trips. It is sad.

Don't forget about The P&G on Amsterdam right behind the Beacon. It opened in 1942 and was open every single day until it closed in January 2010. I remember being there in '06 and Derek walked in after the show while we were hanging at the bar. He walked to the juke box and played The Weight. The ABB had just played it that night.

Derek stayed with some friends around his age for a good 60-90 minutes.

Thanks to LeglizHemp for posting the story & link that I could not post correctly. I've been hugging the employees of Big Nick's and wishing them the best as they clean the place out this week. I've eaten there so often during the 23-years that I've lived around the corner from the place! Boy I am going to miss them. However, I am hoping that Nick will be kind enough to let me have the Allman Brothers sign that hangs on the wall in the Burger Joint side of the store. Hope to see Nick (who lost about 60 pounds and doesn't want to be called "Big" anymore) today and ask him for it

The working class built New York City and made it what it is today. What a shame that the greed factor has pushed out everyone but the mega rich. Once upon a time we could go into Manhattan, get a great dinner, and go see a concert.
Can't afford to do that anymore. Gone are the days.

I have eaten there with friends several times before a Beacon ABB show. Saw James Woods one night eating pizza there!

Woo hoo, I'm mega rich! I always knew I'd make it.

Seriously: even though this was a couple of years in coming it's a shame, and it's true that a lot of good old places have gone away in recent years because of rent hikes. It's part of city life but it's sad to watch and you do get a sense of history and roots being lost. I came pretty close to hopping on the subway and going all the way to the UWS for one more slice over the weekend. I didn't because I figured the line would be around the block. During the '09 run Tyler took me and my other brother to one show - it was the only show middle bro has seen - and we started off with a slice at Big Nick's. That was a great night. For a couple of years after that I went to Big Nick's before every Beacon show.

Sorry to see Big Nick's go - like Yogi's, it was part of the Beacon experience.........

I made sure my wife and I ate there this past March when I went to the Beacon and we went to some Broadway shows and an art show...... they weren't sure then how long they would be open, so I had to go one last time...... they had great pizza there....

No, it's gone. Closed in October 2008, according to the Internet.

Not only that. They tore the entire building down.

I walked past that space with Chuck on the way to the Beacon on 3/19/09 and we paused at the site for a moment of silence.

It was explained on the previous "Big Nick's" thread, but I believe this all came about because there were other renovations to the building in which Nick's is located, and that gave the owner to jack the rent up.

I will really miss Big Nick's and have lots of great memories from there.

So very sad!!! I am so glad I ate there one last time in March pre-HTN party! The UWS ABB Beacon experience is but a hollow shell of its former self.....the demise of Yogi's, now Big Nicks coupled with outrageous and unaffordable Beacon ticket prices...leaves this gypsy with nothing but memories from awesome times gone by....RIP to my favorite places that were a part of some of the best times of my life....never to be forgotten.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. Unfortunally it's a Global thing. Rents etc. are getting so high that the independent and/or family run businesses are disappearing.

Was the first place I went when I got into New York last March. Dropped my bags and headed over for a burger with onion rings. I will miss this place. The menu was like 10 pages!!! You could get anything you wanted.
