In October 2012 Thin Lizzy announced that they would not be recording new material under the Thin Lizzy moniker. The last incarnation of the band -- Scott Gorham, Brian Downey, Darren Wharton, Ricky Warwick, Damon Johnson and Marco Mendoza -- would be looking to form a new project. Step forward Black Star Riders...

December 2012 sees the announcement of the new band formed by Thin Lizzy alumni Ricky Warwick (vocals), Scott Gorham (guitar), Damon Johnson (guitar), and Marco Mendoza (bass) with new addition Jimmy DeGrasso on drums (Alice Cooper, Megadeth, David Lee Roth, Suicidal Tendencies). The change in personnel came about as Brian Downey didn't want to commit to the touring cycle a new album would entail and Darren Wharton wanted to concentrate on Dare and other music and film projects.

Black Star Riders is set to enter the studio in Los Angeles in January 2013 to start recording their debut album with the legendary Kevin Shirley (Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, Aerosmith, Rush). The album will feature material the band wrote whilst touring as Thin Lizzy and the sound retains that classic feel but is very much its own as well. The Black Star Riders record is the next step in the evolution of the Thin Lizzy story.

"We are all very excited about the music that we have created for Black Star Riders. The synergy between the five of us has been phenomenal and I can't wait for the world to hear these songs," says Ricky Warwick.

The new, as yet untitled, album will be released in May 2013 through Nuclear Blast. Black Star Riders are one of the first bands signed by Monte Conner -- the former Roadrunner A&R guru who has signed acts such as Slipknot, Machine Head, Sepultura and Rush. Conner recently joined Nuclear Blast as the president of Nuclear Blast Entertainment, a new U.S. partnership he co-founded with Nuclear Blast owner Markus Staiger.

Says Conner, "As a lifelong Thin Lizzy fan, I was floored by this line-up's new material. Not only do the new songs sound like Thin Lizzy but they sound like CLASSIC Thin Lizzy. Black Star Riders totally captures the essence of what was great about the original band while at the same time adding something totally fresh and modern. Even when I heard the band decided to change their name, my interest in signing them did not waver for one second."

The band are looking to support their May album release with European festivals shows in the summer of 2013 and follow this up with worldwide touring. The set list will consist of material from the new album and classic Thin Lizzy material.

Very respectable of them to change the name rather than milk "Thin Lizzy." Cool.

I saw a version of Thin Lizzy maybe 10 years or so ago at the Beacon, opening for Deep Purple. Solid rock.

I enjoyed some shows on that tour also Jim but the current lineup is much better than the Sykes era. Ricky Warwick's singing is very Lynott like which gives it more of that classic sound.

They started recording as Lizzy and then had a change of heart. It will keep some of the name calling down for sure. Many are pissed that they even tour. I wish that we had more opportunities to see this line up in North America. Oh well.

They haven't ruled out touring as Thin Lizzy is the future. But I hope they have some success as Black Star Riders.

Lizzy's body count matches the ABB also.

Gary could play for LS dollars which actually exceeds the ABB pay or play a club as the GRS for a small percentage. Which would you do?

You know what it is and will pass but some enjoy and many don't care who is there and enjoy the tunes.

I think it's a great idea that they changed their band name. They have recorded new material and didn't think it was appropiate to perform it under the TL name. But i also must admit i think the new name is kinda cheesy and lame. A zillion bands already have the words Black or Rider(s) in their band name and it kinda sounds like a band name for a muzak wedding band or whatever.
A Korean country band maybe....

There was only one Allman Brother(s) Band..it died with Duane.

I love Skynyrd just the way they are, piss on what anyone else thinks...as long as they make me happy.

From what I hear, they changed the name because Phil's family were very unhappy about an album coming out under the Thin Lizzy name.

I had heard that it also had to do with Brian and Darren deciding not to commit to the project and further touring. It makes sense from all angles including family wishes and original/longtime members leaving.

No

And they haven't really been touring for a long time either.

You support Linnie Skinnie and then condemn these guys? You flip flop on the issue quite a bit. I enjoyed seeing the band and getting a chance to hear some classic songs in an arena again. Phil can't be replaced and I don't think these guys ever even tried.

i didn't flip flop on any issue. i asked if anyone else finds the new name ironic. and btw a band has been touring as thin lizzy since 1996 so over 15 years. thats a pretty long time to me.

You make it sound like they were touring all that time. There have been a few tours over all those years. Big gaps between various lineups and often for one off shows.

As for a flip flop, you often support the current LS which you don't see as using the name and yet these guys are? Plus they are even releasing some new music which you love bands doing. Don't have to like them but given your support of bands like LS, what is ironic is you calling them out for their "supposed" use of dead members and their music.

and if lynyrd skynyrd changed their name now and it was something i found ironic i would ask the same thing. i am not dissing thin lizzy but the new black star riders is ironic as hell since the lead singer/bass player of the band was the star and he was black

I guess that I took your riding his coat tails comment as dissing. Was that not your intention?

not really. i will buy this album. i am a pretty big thin lizzy fan. no clue why it took them so long to make an album of new material. i would have actually preferred they just kept the name thin lizzy although i respect them changing the name. just a very odd and ironic name. sorta like if skynyrd changed their name now to NEW VISION or something like that

Fantastic gig by B.S.R in Newcastle UK last night. This is a seriously good band, as tight as any rock band I think I've ever seen. Ricky Warwick is a great fit as singer, the rhythm section of Marco Mendoza and Jimmy DeGrasso is excellent and Damon Johnson perfectly compliments Scott Gorham. The album is worth checking out but I would definitely recommend catching a show if you can.

Setlist, Newcastle Academy 7/12/13

All Hell Breaks Loose
Are You Ready
Bloodshot
Bad Reputation
Before the War
Jailbreak
Hoodoo Voodoo
Massacre
Kingdom of the Lost
Hey Judas
Southbound
Kissin' the Ground
Valley of the Stones
Emerald
Bound for Glory
Cowboy Song
The Boys Are Back in Town
Encore:
Whiskey in the Jar
Rosalie
