I've lived in Newtown, CT, since 1996, and both of my daughters went to Sandy Hook Elementary school, where the shootings occurred yesterday. They are in the upper schools now. Obviously the town is in shock and in mourning, and now is in the middle of a media blitz.

And now the word is that the Westboro Baptist Church folks, who have used military funerals to get their own agenda publicized, are on their way here.

I may have my hands too full taking care of my own kids, who are still young, to be as active as I would like in keeping these opportunists away from the vigil, but I really want to know what other communities have done successfully to keep these people from disrupting the dignity of vigils and funerals.

They came to Mississippi for a soldier's funeral. Somehow the cops figured out what hotel they were staying in and parked cars behind them in the parking lot so they couldn't get out until after the funeral. I think the cops also brought some of them into the station. Their trip was waisted.

Do a search for westboro church Brandon MS for a more accurate story.

If they show up, get as many parents as you can to stand between them and the funeral.
If the parents wish to bring their kids along to honor the ones who fell, get them to stand with the parents blocking the nutjobs and sing and clap as loudly as they can "Give Me That Old Time Religion" and "Amazing Grace". When the funeral ends sing in a prayerful voice "Jesus Loves The Little Children". Ask the Westboro members to sing along.
Of course you could get a few of us old guys to stand in front of them, after eating a few "strategic burritos",
and see if they like being gassed.

If they show up to try to interject themselves on this tragedy either the police need to block them in as was done previously or every last one of their tires need to be slit. I hate those people. They're as evil in their way as the shooter was in his to my way of thinking.

Pretty far for them to take the cult minivan.

Mostly they threaten to show up but never do just get the publicity.

Inbred hicks.

So far nothing on their web site but margie has tweeted they are going.

westboro is a group that would benefit from a nut with a gun entering THEIR "church".

"Briggs and Rockingham County Sheriff Michael Downing spoke at a news conference where Downing read a statement from Nancy's brother, James Champion, who was a captain with the Kingston police before he retired but still works part-time for both the Kingston police and Rockingham County sheriff."

He's got people he can bring there to help keep law and order. With all the law enforcement people investigating the matter, (the shooter crossed state lines with weapons because he was in New Jersey in the time before he came to CT to the school, that makes it a federal issue, in addition to the fact that he shot more than 3 people which is the requirement to consider murders as being serial killings. (yes I watch the show Criminal Minds, it is very interesting and that's where you learn stuff like that).

That was my first thought. When was the last time they actually showed up anywhere? It seems like once they made a name for themselves threatening to show up was enough.

They protested a Formula 1 race in Texas in November.

Also two concerts in Kansas City, Areosmith & Springsteen I believe.

Bunch of inbreds.

So, they all share common DNA? That certainly clears up a few things. Those whack jobs have been in my hometown a couple time protesting one thing or another.

Love the line in the bottom of the page.

"We are Legion" Wonder where and what context I've heard that before?

Also the RHCP concert in KC I went to last month.

There was only three of them, one sign each. It looked kind of pathetic, really. I watched them for about 10 minutes. Everyone ignored them.

The best was when the Foo Fighters were in KC and they dressed up in costume, hired a flatbed and went in front of the Sprint Center the afternoon before the show and serenaded them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DOSkBJ-Q1Zw

Gotta give those folks something else to occupy their spare time.

From the Newtown Patch -

Citizens Form Human Block To Keep Westboro Church From Protesting At Sandy Hook Funerals

Members of police and fire departments from as far away as New York City traveled to Newtown and Woodbury, Connecticut to stop a promised picket of today’s Sandy Hook funerals by the Westboro Baptist Church. The “Church,” certified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, had promised to picket the funerals of the 20 children and six adults from the Sandy Hook Elementary School who died Friday at the hand of a lone gunman.

Westboro Baptist Church had posted to their picket schedule that they would be on hand for the funeral of Sandy hook Elementary School Principal Dawn Hochsprung. Reports stated that the Westboro Baptist Church members were in town but apparently didn’t venture out of their hotel because of what they saw.

“Hundreds of Motorcylists lined up on Wednesday to block and protest the possible protesters,” the Huffington Post reports:
“All these guys saw us and thought we were bad. We’re not. It’s solidarity, is what it is,” New York native Jim Hannigan told Newtown Patch. “I just felt I had to be here.”

More than 1000 riders from New York and Massachusetts, organized by the anti-Westboro group Patriot Guard Riders, were also in Connecticut on Wednesday to show their support, Patch reported. The lined the streets arm in arm to block any protesters that tried to cross the line.

On FDNY website, The Bravest, a posting asked firefighters and police officers to go to Newtown in plain clothes and block the protesters from the victims’ families and friends during the funeral processions.

The group Angel Action, which were ready to counter any Westboro Baptist Church protests at the funerals of the Tucson, Ariz., shooting victims in 2011, created a Facebook event to gather others to protect the Newtown funerals.

The hacktivist group Anonymous, which targeted Westboro after their threats to protest, revealed that members of Westboro were staying in Hartford, Conn., in a Motel 6 on Wednesday, according to the Examiner.

UPDATE: Newtown Patch reports that all those blocking any Westboro Baptist Church protesters have now left because the Westboro group is gone.
