Devastating! I have been painting and listening to tunes. This was the first that I have heard.

Children. Unbelievable.

I just read it and wanted to post it but spotted this topic. Absolutely horrendous. Beyond imagination. A community scarred forever. Poor kids, teachers and relatives.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------------------

Updated at 1:30 p.m. ET: A young man clad in black and carrying two guns rampaged through a Connecticut elementary school Friday, killing 18 small children and seven adults in the nation’s second-worst school massacre, law enforcement officials said.

The gunman, described as a 20-year-old man from Connecticut, was later found dead, a federal law enforcement official told NBC News. Also, one of the parents of the alleged shooter was found dead this morning at a home in New Jersey

A second person was in custody for a possible connection to the school shooting.

Students – mostly under age 10 -- described the terror that gripped Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown when the rampage began around 9:30 a.m., sparking a massive police response that included SWAT officers going room to room to search for victims.

The Hartford Courant, citing unnamed sources, said many of the victims were in a kindergarten classroom.

"I was in the gym and I heard a loud, like seven loud booms, and the gym teachers told us to go in the corner, so we all huddled," one student told NBC Connecticut. "And I kept hearing these booming noises. And we all … started crying.

"All the gym teachers told us to go into the office where no one could find us," she added. "So then a police officer came in and told us to run outside. So we did and we came in the firehouse and waited for our parents."

Dozens of emergency vehicles from across Fairfield County raced to the 600-student school, along with panicked parents hoping to be reunited with their children.

“It was horrendous,'' Brenda Lebinski, mother of a third-grader, said at the scene. "Everyone was in hysterics -- parents, students. There were kids coming out of the school bloodied. I don't know if they were shot, but they were bloodied,'' she said, according to Reuters.

One parent picking up his young son said the shooting was “the most terrifying moment a parent can imagine.” He described the anguish of waiting to find out if his son was a victim and then running to his child.

“It was the greatest relief in my existence,” the father said. “I’m just happy that my kid’s OK.”

Bracing for a large influx of wounded, Danbury Hospital went on lockdown and cleared four trauma rooms. It received only three patients, including a teacher shot in the foot, the Associated Press reported.

The motive for the shooting was unknown, and the gunman’s name was not released.

Two 9mm handguns were recovered from the scene, an official told WNBC's Jonathan Dienst. The Associated Press said one of the guns was a.223-caliber rifle.

The FBI was on the scene, assisting with the investigation.

President Obama was told of the shooting at 10:30 a.m.

"I think it's important on a day like today to view this as I know the president, as a father does, and I as a father and others who are parents certainly do, which is to feel enormous sympathy for families that are affected,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said.

More coverage from NBCNewYork.com and NBCConnecticut.com

The death toll is the highest from a school shooting in U.S. history since a gunman killed 32 people at Virginia Tech in 2007. At Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, two teens killed 13 people and wounded 24 in 1999.

Apparently the gunman killed his father in his home in Hoboken NJ , then drove up to CT to the school where his mother is a kindergarden teacher, stormed in killed her and many of her students.

My God. How do u explain this to the children of this school.......

Ask the Norwegians. Ask the Scotts. Ask any country where innocent people have been killed needlessly. Sadly it happens everywhere. What's worse, it won't be the last time either. Some people will always be evil and/or sick.

And no matter how many screams for "gun control" will change this.

I agree Scott. I feel a sadness that I can not put in words. God bless and be with all involved. This sort of madness is hard to cope with..

It seems to be a cultural event in this country. Photoron286...you're right we can shout gun control all we want. If they stopped making guns today there will still be an abundance of them on the black market. There will still be more than enough to go around We can't stop the production or distribution coming from other countries. Nor could we prevent people from making their own. The only solution is changing how we view them and how people decide to resolve conflict. So many families affected by one person bent on some mission to "prove" something......all of these people want to "prove" something to our society...that they are the one's in power because they have a gun....sad...seems like they all end up killing themselves...because the aftermath and reality breaks their fantasy and they then realize what they have done. It seem there are many out there with kill fantasies...except reality takes over after the fantasy is satisfied..

The more this happens the more I don't want a gun in my life....My father told me nobody wins when a guns involved some family on one side or the other or both feel the affects of the use of such force. I refuse to walk around in fear of some crazy feeling the need to have the same fire power.

20 Christmas trees hovering over gifts that 20 innocent children will never open. 20 families shattered in grief for the rest of their lives. Hundreds of other children who witnessed the madness and will probably never be the same again. It is days like this when I question whether their really is a God. I know for sure that their is a devil and he takes the form of animals like this one and all of the others who do mass murders like this or any murder for that matter. I just can't comprehend what kind of consience would allow a human being to do something like this to not just other human beings, but to innocent, harmless and defenseless children! What the **** is this world coming to???????:-(

Unfortunately, there are some people in this world who are crazy and do things like this. And I agree that gun control will not stop this from happening. Since this happened at a school, I think people who work at the school should be armed, and know how to use a weapon. If that happens, then something like this could be prevented in the future. Also, if anyone knows anyone who is crazy like this shooter, give them help before this happens again. That's my opinion.

I cannot begin to imagine what those parents and families are going through and hope I never will have to know that pain. I can just keep them in my thoughts and prayers. In addition to the families I'd say we should keep all of the first responder's and other personnel in our thoughts as well. Having witness all of that carnage will effect them for remainder of their lives as well.

Yeah but sticking with the status quo is definitly not working.

If they we're your kids I'm 100% sure you'd be singing a different tune.

I am shocked and very saddened by this cowards actions.

this is just sad beyond words. horrible. thoughts and prayers go out to all involved.

regarding gun control - the guy had a military vest on. if you remember, the shooter in the Colorado theater had full body armor. A theater full of armed people, or a school full of armed teachers, is unlikely to have changed anything except for more people dying in crossfire.

I agree that there are crazy people everywhere, and if you really want to get a gun or create a molotov cocktail to kill people, you can.
but we shouldn't make it easy. we shouldn't let people buy military type weapons, or large clips, or weapons that obviously are designed for mass murder instead of target shooting, hunting, or self protection.

better mental health treatment is also a must

The two pistols used are very common weapons, both basic, reliable and widely used by law enforcement.

The rifle is a type of AR-15, one that is very popular across the country, used for target shooting and hunting.

My son is planning on building one of his own this year.

They are great for coyote hunting.

Like sixty8 said....those 20 Christmas trees, those unwrapped gifts, funerals to remember instead of Christmas parades and celebrations. I know the families are forever changed but so are the survivors, the police who had to walk over those little bodies and the people at the funeral homes who have to bury so many babies. It's just too horrible to want to contemplate.

Used for HUNTING??? Some "sport" that is. Spraying in a general direction. Used by great marksman, I'm sure.

I shouldn't have assumed that they are all of Christian faith. Some might be Jewish or some other religion as well but everyone knows what I meant. Most children are celebrating the holidays at this time of year. The holiday season will never again be the same for all of the families involved. So sad and incomprehensible!!!
