Is it really hard to understand? or are each of us so different that we see something different when we read it? or is it like the bible the same verses can be read by 5 people and have 5 different meanings? I am just curious as to what it means to you ... this is not a pro or con gun thread it is about what we feel and why we feel this way....

For me personally it means pretty much what this quote says...

" A Free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of Independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government." GEORGE WASHINGTON

Americans have a right to own guns, as many as they wish.
I personally don't like guns, but I have no problem with those who like them and own them.
The government will never, ever, ever take all the guns away. Ever. Literally impossible.
I wish we didn't live in a society where dying in a gun massacre has become a legitimate risk and I honestly don't know what the balance of gun vs. crazy is, but here we are.

Because they wouldn't or because you think it would be impossible?

I would hesitate to say "never" on much of anything at this point.

I dont own any firearms but I believe guns (all types and calibers) are the last seige against tyranny and law abiding citizens should have the right to purchase them if they choose. I also believe gun makers should be better accountable for their inventory and find a way to limit the diversion of firearms to the black market.

Logistically and numerically impossible. The FBI estimates that there are over 200 million guns in America. At just over 330 million people in the country, how many law enforcement agents would it take to go get them all? Are they gonna go house-to-house?

So one day the government says "turn in all your guns, folks!" and everyone will just march right up and hand them over? Yeah, right.

I agree entirely with the sentiment of the above statement. Unfortunately, it is a common misquote of what George Washingtion actually said. What he said in his First Annual Message to Congress (January 8, 1790) was:

"A free people ought not only be armed but disciplined; to which end, a uniform and well digested plan is requisite: And their safety and interest require that they should promote such manufactories, as tend to render them independent on others, for essential, particularly for military supplies."

Regardless of the accuracy of the quote, I do believe our Founders intended to preserve the right to bear arms to all citizens as a protection against an abusive government, and I believe the need for that protection is as valid today as it was then.

Huh? I've re-read this thread twice and I can't find where anyone mentioned Obama or claimed that their 2nd amendment rights had been infringed upon. Can you point out specifically where that was stated in this thread and who you are asking specifics from?

He hasn't. It's a scare tactic the NRA uses for fund raising which is why I left the NRA 3 years ago.

My point exactly....but it doesn't stop people from thinking they're guns are at risk for some reason. However, no one in here has explained yet why they feel that way.

I agree with PEach, big ann, and Bhawk.

Scare tatics on guns from the Republicans. That is all.

I believe in guns and gun control.
One must be licensed, registered, have a waiting period.

There is no way aloak41 that th USA will never have guns, people owning guns.

I think Democrats and Republicans agree on that. BOTH sides of citizens own guns and are keeping their guns.

As I stated in the opening post this thread is not about gun 's pro or con or anyone trying to take that right away from you it is about what you think when you read the second amendment! so please everyone stick to the subject matter and state what you think or feel about the second amendment.. thank you

Bob1954 thanks for the correction and the corrected speech it still pretty much states what i feel, and I came from a people who were conquered by guns but this is still our(all of us) country and the many that died to give us the freedom we so take for granted should be not forgotten and what they wrote and died for should still be a relevant today as it was then . Either that or we all are going to loose this freedom one piece at a time...

Personally, no one is taking my guns and the first amendment is intact. However, if one is afraid of losing their rights.....more notice should be taken of all the insidious ways our privacy is being invaded. Oh sure, that ap for your i-phone that allows you to check out just by scanning it over the things youre buying sounds great....but I don't especially want to end up in some data base somewhere used for heaven knows what. It's one of the reason I still use a flip phone without internet access and shop where they don't keep records of what I buy so they can sell the information to people who want to sell me more of their products. Krogers does that and it's just creepy!

Johnny keeps trying to get me to upgrade because he loves the newest in technology and I keep telling him I'm perfectly happy with something that just makes calls and sends the occassional text. Not only am I still using my old phone....I have one just like it to switch to when this one finally gives out completly. I've had to glue it a couple of times so it won't take pictures any more so I'll probably switch to the other one some day soon, but I don't' take pictures with it anyway so no big hurry. Guess mine will meet yours at the Smithsonian :-)

That's funny.......I have a few friends like that...Personally, I gotta have the latest and greatest. But I do understand where you guys are coming from...... I would also add that I wish my daughter had the same view towards phones as you all, rather than mine
