Very sad to hear that about Jack. He hooked me up in trade with 2 of my favorite shows, the ABB 2005 London Ontario, and a killer DB&GS show as well

Jack would be spinning in his grave to see what the NHL is once again letting itself slide into -- the pits -- like Pete said, they're morons -- having learned nothing from the previous lost season...

RIP, brother

I am shocked and deeply saddened to hear of Jack's passing.

He was one of the first web site folks I met when we went to Toronto for the ABB in 2003.

Traded with him a few times, can't count the number of hockey chats.

Cancer sucks.

I'm in shock! I had no idea about Jack. We met in Gadsden, AL one year when he came down for Jam For Duane. Man, this really sucks. Think I'll go have a beer in his honor. RIP Jack. I'll miss talking drag racing with you.

Jack spoke highly of you also Dave and all those he met on that trip. We had talked about coming down with a group of us Canadians after everyones' health issues were cleaned up. Was also planning on visiting some family near Jack this winter and had talked about going to some junior hockey games with him.

Shocked and saddened at the news of Jack's passing. He was indeed one of the good ones.

I put some pictures of him over in the thread BDOB dedicated to him. I took them at The JFD 2007....

Players exodus continues from the NHL as Scott Gomez signs with the Alaska Aces of the ECHL. At least he picked a team to play for that has to fly to most of thier away games.

Leafs being slammed as per usual by Don Cherry for their shoddy treatment of Bazem Khadri.

No idea how a franchise can be run so poorly and create so much bad press even in a lockout. I know the Toronto press and the sports channels need a sound bite and a chance to over hype something but man take it from the Canucks or Habs once in a while.

On the bright side, all of our teams are still in the playoff race.

Watched a news story about the loss of revenues for local businesses and how people are being layed off or let go completely. Their salaries are peanuts compared to the millions lost for teams and players but the difference is that money feeds and shelters them and their families.

Every pro athlete who sign for 1/10th their salaries if no other option was available. The sports and entertainment industry is totally out of whack with reality.

THE FRENCH CONNECTION, IMMORTALIZED IN BUFFALO
Too bad the they unveiled it at the start of a non-season

BUFFALO, N.Y. -- The French Connection is together again in Buffalo.

Forty years after Gilbert Perreault, Rene Robert and Rick Martin first skated together on a forward line, the Sabres unveiled a statue honoring the trio in a ceremony Friday night outside First Niagara Center.

AP Photo/Gary WiepertThe Sabres revealed a statue honoring Gilbert Perreault, Rene Robert and Rick Martin -- the French Connection -- Friday. The trio scored 2,573 points in 2,396 games together.

The bronze statue, designed and constructed by sculptor Jerry McKenna, is based on a photograph taken by Ron Moscati during an April 1975 playoff victory over the Montreal Canadiens. The statue anchors the Buffalo Sabres Alumni Plaza.

The three French-Canadian players earned the famous nickname after the 1971 film of the same name. In 2,396 games with the Sabres from 1972-79, Perreault, Robert and Martin combined for 1,116 goals and 2,573 points.

The statue was unveiled after a brief video. A cheer of "Rick Martin Rules!" came from the crowd, noting the late winger. The honorees wore a pin bearing "Rico 7" in honor of Martin, who died March 13, 2011.

"It's incredible," said Cory Martin, the 26-year-old son of Rick Martin. "I'm still looking at it. You can see I can't take my eyes off it. I never got to see him play. I wasn't born when he was playing."

Perreault and Robert also mentioned their late teammate.

"Our mission here was to put a great show on the ice for the Buffalo fans," said Perreault, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1990. "The French Connection was something very special. We had some great years together. It's a great honor. It's a very special night. We sure miss Rico, but it's part of life."

Said Robert: "It's difficult. Every time there is something that involves Gilbert and I and we talk about the French Connection, he's missed. He was the one who brought this weather because this morning it didn't look too good."

Along with the statue, the plaza features five brick columns that are covered in plaques bearing the names of all 401 Sabres alumni. Each column represents a decade of Sabres history and they all support a pedestrian walkway, which features a pictorial display of players throughout the franchise's history.

Not sure you folks down south can get the HNIC feed on NHL Network or through NBC Sports Channel but CBC is showing classic games every Saturday night. Folks are asked to vote on CBC for thier pick to be shown Saturday night.

Last Saturday was the Bruins at the Habs in 1979 SCup playoffs. The some would say infamous game where D. S. Cherry got burned for too many men on the ice in OT.

I watched the first period on PVR the other night and loved it. As a Toronto kid with Western Quebec roots it was tough not to cheer for the habs. It was great to watch the game, the fans we're going nuts, no signs on boards, no helmets, no steriod monkeys on the ice. Small guys survived.
Took me back in time to sitting in my grandparents farmhouse on freezing cold xmas season nights watching HNIC with my cousins.
This week they are showing the Flyers at Soviets in the 70's another classic.

am missing hockey already. Players seem a bit out of reality here. I dont think this sport makes that much money and several teams are in trouble big time. I dont know specifics of the plans but you know they will settle when it comes time for the season to be at risk. Until then, i guess there is no sense of urgency, similar to NBA last year. Hockey is a niche game that is the best sport to those of us who love it, but inconsequential to the rest of humanity. LOL

Unless you are Canadian where there are only two seasons in the year.

Lockouts/strikes throw off the balance.

Leaves you with time to wonder about things. Like does anybody really give a **** what is in those damned storage lockers? Any why are there 50 people there and only the same 4 **** s bid? Mostly though it is questions like who calls this reality?

This thing sucks so bad. Players running off to Europe to play. Here in Chicago they actually had some event to promote the game at the United Center where the Hawks play and I'm thinking "WTF"?

How many labor issues can a sport have? Bummer...

Every major sport does the same thing and waits till after the previous contract is up to start dealing. Both sides think it gives them strength but it really only screws fans and costs them money. The concept of start dealing the year before seems to escape them all.

Stupid

Without an agreement at least by Thanksgivingtime there's no season -- they're making a lot of noise now about "3 straight days of face to face meetings!!" -- I'll believe what they're saying only when the puck drops, & even then...

Reading Derek Sanderson's new book, "Crossing the Line" -- not a bad read, but it seems Derek has gone English -- centers are "centres", defensemen are "defencemen" -- words like color, honor, favor -- all those ones have the English 'u' in them -- even the word "bloody" as in "bloody well right", is part of Derek's narrative.

Weird -- but I love the Turk & his story is compelling -- booze, blow, broads & the WHA contract rendered him delusional, but he conquered his demons, works and has a wife and 2 sons
can never get enough of the 1967-72 Big Bad Bruins era

They really are making progress, Stephen.

As for Sanderson, he is Canadian and that is how we spell those words except for centre. He went French on that one.

Just thought of the perfect Christmas present for you. Gonna send you some footage of those classic Bruins that you love. Just have to pry it out of one of my friends. He is a lurker here so he will know that I am coming. He is a HUGE Bobby Orr fan and loves collecting classic hockey games.

Man that would be outta sight James!
we'll do a trade -- got lots of stuff myself, altho it's all on VCR tape so a little outdated -- have the last 2 periods of the Dec. 74/Jan. 75 BlackHawks game in which Turk was ejected for attacking the referee, then Orr & Espo were ejected at the end of the game -- Bobby Orr, one 1 good leg, was simply ridiculous in that game
But I can't get started bro, or I get hooked!

thanks for the headsup on the dialect too -- reread some of Derek's first book that I still have, "I've Got To Be Me" & those words were spelled the American way --
had his next book, "The Derek Sanderson Nobody Knows" from 1974 for awhile too, but long gone now...

They were saying in the negotiations that Friday's session would be crucial as to what the next few weeks would have in store -- we shall see -- I wish they'd listen to your comment about getting started on these talks a good year in advance, knowing they're coming down the road

Dang I can't stop from getting long-winded -- am uncomfortable with it -- thanks again bro

Will work on that for you, Stephen. He has some stuff that would just blow you away.

You two guys could spend hours talking about the Bruins of that era. As I mentioned, he likes to lurk around here sometimes so he will see this most likely and probably be the one to remind me. Not sure if he has the game that you mention but if not he would likely love to have it. We can also transfer that to DVD for you so you can have VHS and DVD of it.

I'll send you a PM after I talk to him.

I just got off the phone with a buddy who works at the station that calls the Sens games.

He said that his sources claim that they are close and just ironing out some of the final issues. Template in place for a 70 game season.

I think the most positive sign is that both sides have stayed away from discussing the meetings with the media. Usually a sign that they are getting close.

They're still talkin' bro, that's the main thing -- if they don't have an agreement by the end of the month tho...won't make for much of a season

Looks like the Turk is coming to the big screen -- according to a blurb in this morning's paper, they're going to make a movie of Derek Sanderson's life, mainly, the blurb says, centered around his friendship with Bobby Orr

Hopefully Derek gets a good chunk of change out of the whole thing, he deserves it.
