LOL...I just did a google search on this and after looking at five pages of results I don't know the answer to your question but I do appreciate your comment "I have found many articles but they have suspect origins."

Don't have your answer, but am guessing that this is 'spin'.

That is, the "Govt" (local Police, State Police, ATF, FBI, etc...) is always contracting to buy/buying ammo. Take the 'up surplus' out of the statement and it become a benign/non-instagatory statment - i.e. "Govt buying ammo!".

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/atk-secures-40-caliber-ammunition-contract -with-department-of-homeland-security-us-immigration-and-customs-enforcemen t-dhs-ice-2012-03-12

Again, I'll guess this is false...until I see empty shelves i nthe stores and online orders not being accepted.

Peace!

Well this is getting deeper my local gun store had a order in to a major manufacturer of 5.56 25,000 rounds and was told that they could not deliever due to government buying up all ammo and this would continue thru election time now I have know the guy for a long time and he would not make something up like this so i am beginning to wonder and what does Homeland security need with a huge contract for ammo?

I'd believe somebody in the business of buying/selling ammo than any media source. That is just me......after all the media never lies now do they, and of course.....never does the government.

Hmmmm....maybe I need to start stocking up .40 cal, .45 ACP., and .223, .308 and 30-06....or maybe just .40 for my glocks and .223 for my AR-15 and Mini-14....I remember some years ago of talk that the gov't was going to attempt to take our arms...1st amendment says I have the right to bear arms...but if there is no ammo, since I dont load my own...YIKES. Food for thought, and just my humble .02 worth (which isnt much)

my thoughts exactly they don't have to take the guns if there is no ammo just saying if the most popular ammo supply is gone the price will go sky high and most folks won't be able to afford what little there is Yikes is right I wish I could get a for real answer on this one...

I enjoy a good conspiracy theory, so please let me know what goal is achieved by removing ammo until the election. I cannot imagine one, unless there are some that think ammo has something to do w/ furthering the election process.

Why does law enforcement need ammo? I'd say they have a more legitimate need for it than the average person.

If Iran is invaded, there would be a need to build up ammo supplies.
