I would go with the second one, Sail On. It has pretty much the same songs but the DVD of rare stuff is the deciding factor.

I think the 2004 "Sail On" box set sounds like the better deal, as it's pretty much identical to the earlier set but with some additional content.

The only thing I would be wary of is possible "remastered" sound which might be heavily compressed. Or maybe that doesn't bother you. I don't know that for a fact, but it's a question I would have myself before purchasing a box set like this.

I use to own both of them but after I picked up "Sail On" I never listened to the other one so I traded it off @ a used cd store. The first one has a nice booklet but most songs are on both box sets & the dvd that comes with "Sail On" is really cool so I would rather have the space than own them both but if you do want to own them both the first box set you can buy used for around $10 now.

thanks i noticed the first one is pretty cheap now but also that SAIL ON has dropped in price a lot on amazon. question about the SAIL ON packaging, on the cd's and dvd secured by plastic trays much like the SRV boxset or the 2 newer hendrix bosets? or are they just held in cardboard sleeves?

I'd take Kansas onstage in the mid to late 70's over the ABB of same period.

A joke really guys? To each their own but Kansas has made some classic albums over the years & to me they are in the same class as bands like Rush & Yes. To answer your question Matt the first box set is two single cds in jewell cases like most cds from that time period. The "Sail On" box set is like a hardcover book. The photos & bio booklet are attatched to the seam on the inside & the cds & dvd snap into the inside of the front & back covers. They are not in any cases or sleeves but are attached securely to the inside. I own somewhere around 20 different box sets by different artist & this is one of the nicer ones.

Sail On is a nice lil package.

At least Kansas could write an album or five of original tunes by somebody not named Dickey

lol.

only thing i wish Sail On was 3 cd's and 1 dvd. a few more early tunes and a more in depth look at the post 1983 stuff would have been nice. i know how the box is set up now and i know there is space for a 3rd cd. even odder neither cd takes up 75 minutes. one is 70 and the other about 65. they had space for 3 more tunes

Kansas was good, radio-friendly Prog... As I was a Proggish Youth, I had several of their 8-Tracks and enjoyed them greatly!

btw what are the other boxsets you have? i have a lot myself. i feel a boxset should either be rarities/outtakes/unreleased stuff or give you enough rarities/outtakes/unreleased stuff to make hardcore fans want it and give casual fans a good enough overview of a bands career to make you feel like you don't need to own any more albums by the band. most of the boxsets i have do that
allman brothers- dreams
elton john- to be continued
buffalo springfield- boxset
ted nugent- out of control
mountain- over the top
ac/dc- bonfire
the who- 30 years of max r&b
zz top- chrome, smoke and bbq
hank williams jr- the bocephus box
deep purple- shades 1968-1998
kiss- boxset
ac/dc- backtracks
alice cooper- the life and crimes of alice cooper
tom petty- playback
the doors- boxset
jimi hendrix- the hendrix experience
CCR-boxset
dwight yoakam- reprise please baby
jimmy buffet- boats, beaches, bars and ballads
the faces- 5 guys walk into a bar
kenny rogers- through the years
doobie brothers- long train runnin- 1970-2000
beach boys- smile
led zeppelin- complete studio recordings
bon jovi- 100,000,000 bon jovi fans can't be wrong
kansas- sail on
stevie ray vaughan- SRV

i want the cheap trick- sex, america, cheap trick boxset

man i ordered this boxset thursday night from amazon. got free shipping and it arrived saturday afternoon. talk about fast delivery. i still need to watch the dvd but i already listened to both cd's. this is a great set for someone like me, slightly more than a casual fan but not a hardcore fan. between the cd's and the dvd it looks like just about every well known kansas song is present. i would have replaced "miracles out of nowhere" since its on the dvd with "the wall", dropped 1 of the tunes from POINT OF KNOW RETURN and added "the wheel" and another tunes from the album SOMEWHERE TO ELSEWHERE. a 3rd cd of unreleased stuff might have been a good idea to make hardcore fans want to purchse this set
