I agree with everything that has been said here. Artists like Madonna who lip-sync are fake musicians!!

With regard to Madonna and her Super Bowl appearance, I wish the networks and the NFL would ditch the entire prolonged and boring half time show altogether. It's a football game and should be viewed as such in my opinion.

i wish they would pick bands that the audience of the game would like. most people watching the game are usually males so old madonna isn't going to do it for them

But those guys are already watching the game; they want to get new traffic to the set during halftime

KISS did that for some guitar stuff on DESTROYER when ace was a no show. i think its dick wagner playing on 2 songs. on DYNASTY and UNMASKED david letermans drummer filled in for peter criss. other than that as far as i know every note on any other albums are members of KISS and i doubt they use tapes in their concert since their concerts are never close to perfect

Who's Gene Simmons? Is he that guy from that reality show?

Seriously: Gene Simmons and Madonna are about equal in artistic integrity, and I've heard of War, but actually didn't know who Howard Scott is. Why am I supposed to care what these people think about each other or music in general?

I do have the Super Bowl halftime show. It's a freaking football game and it's bad for football to put a 40-minute break in the middle. That said, I'm going to put on some Beastie Boys because unlike Gene Simmons and Madonna, they make interesting music.

The lip-synching thing, y'know, it doesn't bother everyone.

Britney Spears last tour (a mega success from everything I read), she lip-synched a lot because of the impossibility to do elaborate dance numbers and sing properly. People posted a ton of clips on youtube early in the tour showing her lip-synch mistakes, but no one really cared and it didn't effect her ticket sales one bit.

Some folks want to see a show. Other folks want to see a performance. So it goes.

Super Bowl halftime? All part of the fun of America's unofficial holiday, IMO. I don't mind it one bit.

It definitely doesn't. And I think there's a long history of lip synching or miming at the Super Bowl anyway. I guess the Stones were probably live a couple of years ago - if they'd recorded their performance ahead of time it wouldn't have sounded so bad.

Thank you. They should show case some good H.S. Marching bands.

Halftime during the Super Bowl is:
A) perfect for that quick beer run
B) time to get in the bathroom line
C) time to load up on the food
D) time for a "Safety meeting" in the back yard

Didn't Tom Petty do the halftime show recently? I think ol' Tom would sign off on the safety meeting.

Signed and double signed, Marley my friend Somebody on this website was complaining the other day because The Beastie Boys got in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and KISS didn't, and I said that sounded exactly correct to me.

I can understand the complaints that the R+R HOF is all over the map in terms of inducting people who are not, in any sense of the term, rock and roll musicians. However, since they have already inducted other hip-hop artists, it would be ridiculous not to have the best hip-hop act of all time in there. I think The Beastie Boys win that prize.

I know there is a pervasive distaste for anything resembling rap music on this website, but the Beastie Boys actually play instruments and write intelligent lyrics about worthwhile topics, once you get past their early "Fight For Your Right To Party" days.

I used to dismiss the Beastie Boys as crap, and I missed out on a lot of good music that way.

I am blasting both.

Superbowl halftimes shows have pretty bad in recent years. It is a football game, but at that time, halftime, there is no football.
It is halftime. 15 mins. of halftime.

I think Paul McCartney was pretty good and of course safe, for a halftime show in 2005.

When New Orleans hosted a SB one year, there were New Orleans musicians like The Neviles, Dr. John and those people if I not mistaken.
I will have to google that.

The Saints/Colts SB game had an awful hafltime show by The Who.
Old band. Lots of lasers lights. Nothing else but blinding laser lights. Lots of sounds of screeching. British band. Boring. Old men.
It just sucked.
Southern Univ. at Baton Rouge or Grambling Univ. from Grambling, LA would have been really good.

Halftime should be for some young, CLEAN G-RATED , fast, fun, music.
After Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake purposely took her top off, I don't know what happened to halftime shows.

Oh, some entertainers can perform and entertain and give a great show , high energy, dancing, and not lip sync. that is bs that one cannot do this.
Ever saw Tina Turner and I mean in the 1990's, 2000's when she was older. I doubt she can now.
Since this a ABB site, can I dare say her name, but Cher , great show. No lip syncing. I saw her in early 2000's . Great show.

For halftime, Beatise Boys are 1980's. Old. Out of style.
And you cannot have a group like them perform and assume they are not going to throw out f-bombs and other fun words.
Madonna, old, 1980's-1990's. Overkill. Ego. Also, of course, she is going to throw out some f-bombs and explicit touching with her dancers. Look for male on male. Female on female. Madonna on Madonna.

I think good ones would be:
Cher
Kiss
Tian Turner if you want older , established entertainers.
Southern Univ.
Grambling Univ.
I Gloria Estefan did this before.
The host city's major university band.
Gladys Knight and the Pips.
Motown entertainers.
Good young country bands and singers.
I don 't know.

Could not disagree more. The Who, one of the greatest rock 'n' roll bands of all-time, and they can still do it. I'd go see them again in a minute. "Boring. Old men." The original members of The Allman Brothers Band are old men. So is Eric Clapton. So is Ray Davies. Buddy Guy. Mick Jagger. Keith Richards. Charlie Watts. David Gilmour. Roger Waters. Chick Corea. John McLaughlin. Start to get my point?

I did not care one way or the other about the Beastie Boys until I heard them sample "Flute Thing" (by the Blues Project). It was a horrible desecration of a beautiful song.

Part of the strategy of football is in fact how you utilize the break between the second and third quarter. Since the Superbowl is the championship game for the NFL, I just feel the half time break shouldn't be extended to accommodate playing extensive musical sets or long and boring interviews with current or past players, etc. It just seems odd to me. I suppose I'm a purist snob.

Same here, the Beastie Boys make good music. They released a CD of their instrumentals called [something in French and then] "the new sounds from way out." I used to play it all the time until somebody STOLE the frickin CD.

Any time someone wants to put on Paul's Boutique or Ill Communication I always second the motion...

I wasn't even thinking about the fact that they play instruments when I wrote that, but they do and it's also a good point. Even in their early days when their stuff was goofier, they were writing very funny lyrics.

I was going to say I wouldn't want the Beasties to play the Super Bowl (and I don't think they would be asked), but it's already sort of happened: last year when the Black Eyed Peas were playing, I got out my iPad and listened to a couple of Beastie Boys songs so I wouldn't have to listen to the Black Eyed Peas, who are absolutely insipid and terrible and make some of the most annoying music out there. The visuals were OK, so it worked out.
