I am from the Indy area and it's nice to see Butler pushing further into the tournament. I think this year is even more of a suprise than last. Last year they were ranked pretty high and had Gordon Hayward. This year Gordon is gone, they kinda struggled at points during they're season and pretty much had to win they're conference tournament to get in (which they did). The play Florida on Saturday.

Oh darn, Duke lost...

Article from Bob Kravitz Indy Star
http://www.indystar.com/article/20110325/SPORTS15/103250343/Kravitz-s-not-m agic-just-best-team-winning?odyssey=tab|topnews|img|IndyStar.com

This isn't about magic, and never has been about magic with Butler basketball and its continued rerun to NCAA Tournament glory.

In the end, there's nothing magical about Butler's toughness, about Matt Howard beating every Wisconsin player for loose balls, or Shawn Vanzant forcing the most efficient team in the nation into several turnovers, or Shelvin Mack muscling his way to the rim against a bigger Badgers team.

All the Bulldogs did Thursday night in New Orleans was beat up the big, bad, mean Wisconsin Badgers from the Big Ten, making them look soft for most of the night, and moving within one victory of another Final Four.

Butler 61, Wisconsin 54.

They didn't beat them. They embarrassed them.

Amazing? Yes.

Remarkable? True.

Unlikely? Absolutely.

Magical? No.

This group is just tougher, smarter and better than anybody they've played so far in this NCAA Tournament, and this time, they didn't need a late miracle or some serendipitous officiating in the final seconds to gain entry into the Elite Eight and a Saturday date with Florida.

(Quick aside: I'm writing this from The Big Easy Chair -- in Fishers -- and not The Big Easy because I chose to keep the Butler bulldog, Blue II, company. And, well, because I needed to get another stent put in my misbehaving heart the other day and the cardiologist didn't think travel was the hottest idea. So anyway . . . back to Butler).

There is nothing magical about attention to detail, knowing what your competitors are going to do before they do it. There is nothing magical about players like Howard, adding that perimeter shot to his game during the summer, or Andrew Smith, growing up so much between his freshman and sophomore year. There is nothing magical about simply wanting it more, or freshman Khyle Marshall replacing the injured Smith and performing well, or playing more like a Big Ten team than, well, the Big Ten team.

Consider: Wisconsin led the nation in fewest turnovers per game (7.5). Butler turned them over eight times in the first half, digging in, helping on the weak side, doing everything that great defensive teams do. The Bulldogs scored 15 points off turnovers in the half.

Consider: During one stretch late in the first half and early in the second half, Wisconsin missed 17-of-18 shots. Most of those shots came from outside, simply because Butler's interior people refused to give up low-post position.

Consider: Jordan Taylor, the guard who went absolutely Michael Jordan on the Hoosiers at Assembly Hall, got completely flustered and scored only six points in the first 30 minutes. He went nuts during Wisconsin's furious rally that came up short, finishing with 22, but it was too little, too late.

Wisconsin's other star, Jon Leuer, had just three points on 1-of-12 shooting.

When Wisconsin coach Bo Ryan was asked by TV at halftime how his team would match Butler's intensity, he bristled and called it an "unfair question.''

Really?

Wisconsin was lifeless. And lousy. And wayward, at least until those final few minutes. And Butler -- yeah, Butler -- had a whole lot to do with that.

In every conceivable way, Butler's return run to glory is more improbable and more impressive than last year's roll to the national-title game.

Remember, this is the same group who lost to Youngstown State and Evansville. Youngstown State and Evansville. There were reasonable questions whether they could earn an at-large berth if they failed to win the Horizon League title -- which they ended up doing, of course.

Last year's team featured Gordon Hayward, an NBA lottery selection, and Willie Veasley, a glue guy whose loss cannot be overestimated. During the broadcast, Charles Barkley kept saying Wisconsin would eventually wear down Butler, and "Gordon Hayward isn't walking through that door.''

Turned out, they didn't need Hayward.

And there's no chance Butler can sneak up on anybody anymore. For years, hoops cognoscenti have known what Butler has built over the years, but last year, they sprung into the national consciousness.

Now comes Florida, and if it's true that styles make fights, this ought to be an incredible game. Florida plays fast, has size, and went shot for shot with Jimmer Fredette and BYU. Butler, as we know, plays more efficiently, although they are scoring more points per game this year than they did last season.

It doesn't matter when this ends, on Saturday against Florida in New Orleans or next week in Houston or never. This has been an amazing thing to witness. And it's been a testament to the players, who have gotten better every day, and to Brad Stevens and his coaching staff.

The idea is to play your best basketball at the end of the season, something Purdue, as an example, failed to do.

Heading into this year's NCAA Tournament, everybody asked the question, "Who's gonna be this year's Butler?''

Turns out, it's Butler.

Who could have imagined, when this tournament began, that Butler would still be playing and Duke would be eliminated?

Nobody.

The Bulldogs are back, just one game from the Final Four in Houston.

Amazing. Remarkable. Wonderful.

Just not magical

I'm a NC native, born and bred on ACC hype...but I'm a Wake Forest fan through thick and thin. I enjoyed watching Butler's run last year, I've watched every tournament game they have played (that I was able to) and all I can say is : GO BUTLER!!!! I couldn't think of a nicer scenario than for Butler to slay Goliath wheter it be UCON or KY. So, GO BUTLER!!!! And their head coach is a class act, heck I might just start pulling for 'em on a consistent basis.

Duke got lucky that game.....this shot falls in coach K and his boys go home losers. yeah losers... Imagine the "almighty Duke "falling in that game. That would have been "sweet", but it was not meant to be. But hey ,Butler has been building this over the last 10 yrs . This is no overnight success. Not to many teams make it to back to back Final Fours. Brad Stevens can coach with the best and stand shoulder to shoulder with anyone.

Nuthin would've been finer in Carolina to have seen that shot fall and send Duke home losers IMHO!!!! Brad Stevens looks to me like the heir apparent to Coach K... GO BUTLER!!

I'm not trying to reign on your parade....I AM pulling for Butler....but I've heard about how IF that shot falls for a year now....it didn't. It was a great game though....and I for one was a nervous wreck. March is my favorite time of the year....because of it's purity. Regardless of what team wins every year....if you string together 6 wins in that environment...you deserve the crown with no questions asked. It's as hard as anything in sports to do.

Hope you guys take it...that would something really special. Your coach is a great one.

Butler +3.5
