That's the spirit goldtop. You certainly made more progress than me. Think it just might be one of those genetic things with me. Anyway no more squats for me. Hip replacement 2 yrs ago. Good luck and go for it!!! ____________________ Danny Spell |

I've gone back to heavier bech press, just couldn't stop myself! I'm trying to do some type of cardio every day, even if it's just walking. Limiting my strength training to 4 times a week. Feeling good! ____________________ Ask not for whom the bell tolls |

Doug I cut my weight training from six to five days a week. Just didn't feel my body was recovering properly. I do a split routine of chest and triceps day 1 then arms and back day 2 then shoulders and legs. I try to go heavy on round one and light on round 2. Abs and cardio everyday. Feeling pretty good with it. ____________________ Danny Spell |

I do a similiar type routine. I found as I got older my body just did not recover as fast or as efficiently as it used to (imagine that!). Only took me about 4 or 5 years to accept it. ____________________ Ask not for whom the bell tolls |

Happy Friday gang! My favorite day to exercise. 1200 - 1500 yards in the pool today with a short run to and back.
Make it a good one! Cheers! ____________________ "It's all about Allman Brothers pride." T Thompson Greek Theater, Los Angeles 5/6/2005 |

Well I finally did it gang. I swam a mile (plus a little extra; easy to lose count of laps) non stop. I just said to myself this morning, "Today is the day." Fortunately, the pool wasn't crowded and I had a lane to myself the whole time. Started off slowly and worked my way into a good rhythm and zone. Arms are a little tired and I think I'm growing some gills on my neck... other than that, it's all good! ____________________ "It's all about Allman Brothers pride." Does anyone use protien supplements. My buddy that runs the gym told me there is a 45 min. window to take it. It helps repair the muscle micro tear with the muscle tears after lifting weigthts ____________________ Danny Spell |

I use Whey and casein protein supplements. I don't enjoy eating as much as I use to...bloating...etc...so I use protein supplements to make up where I don't get enough animal protein....
Whey is fast absorbing 15 grams per hr and casein is slow absorbing 5 grams per hr. On the days I work out I make a protein drink in the morning with a cup of cold water, 1 banana, 5 strawberries and a hand full of a frozen triple berry mix I get at the grocery store. My strawberries are also frozen. I use 2 scoops of the whey 50 grams of protein and I drink half before my workout along with a bowl of oatmeal and then after my workout I drink the other half of the protein drink. casein I use at night before bed and I mix 2 scoops, 50 grams, with either water or milk. casein is thick and it makes great milk shakes. Sometimes at night I will eat cottage cheese, it is the source that both protein powders are derived from.

Been going to Physical Therapy for my sports hernia and hamstring issues. I'm now up to running 4 miles three times per week (between 8:05-8:35 per mile). Hoping the PT works as I turned by issue last fall into a chronic problem by not resting, particularly after my marathon.
Still hitting the gym or doing Perfect Pushup workoout at home (2-3/week strength stuff).
Can't wait to get everything back to where it was in summer 2011. ____________________ Tim L. |

Finally got out and ran yesterday. It was the first time since last Wednesday. Nice fall weather and just cruised with my friend. Worked the last part of the climb but didn't go all out. I can tell this morning because my legs are stiff.
Looking forward to getting into the pool today and on Friday. Going running on TG morning is always fun. Then again, hanging out works too! ____________________ "It's all about Allman Brothers pride." T Thompson Greek Theater, Los Angeles 5/6/2005 |

Happy Thanksgiving to all... :-)
Mine is open until 2PM today reopens tomorrow at 6AM....
Got a workout in today. Had a little set back last week...Tried dead lifting for the first time in a very long time and didn't take my time warming up and slipped my disc that likes to go out when I do something stupid....Needless to say I need to back my weights back down on my squat too....Did some light squats and dead lifts this week and took a little more time stretching....Most of the problem is really the strength difference between my right and left legs....My left is weak and tight as hell because of the constant spasms and atrophy over the years....Working on it.....lots of stretching these days

Well I hope everyone enjoyed their Thanksgiving and are now back in the groove.
It's coolish and it's supposed to rain today. Not sure if I'm hitting the pool or the pavement today. Fortunately, the pool is heated (outdoor one) and it's sort of fun swimming when it's raining. It's less crowded too. Then again, running out in the rain is like being a kid again. The rain takes your mind off the pain too! We'll see... ____________________ "It's all about Allman Brothers pride." T Thompson Greek Theater, Los Angeles 5/6/2005 |

What age is a good time to start weight training? I have a 11 year old nephew who played Pop Warner football last year...is he too young to start with some basic weight training?
I figure a twice a week full body would be a good start for him...any thoughts??
day 1
Squats
Bench
bent rows
day 2
Deadlift
Shoulder press
Pulldowns or chin-ups

I think the 11-12 yo range is okay, as long as they focus on form and repetition and not how much weight they can lift. 2-3 sets at 10-12 reps at weights he can do cleanly is whaqt I have my son do, and we always end with some kind of cardio. He goes with me once a week and works out at home with push-ups, sit-ups, etc. a couple of times a week. My daughter is starting serious strength taining this year with her soccer team. So glad the kids are making this part of their lifestyle! ____________________ Ask not for whom the bell tolls |
