Way to PR WharfRat! I think running in 40ish degrees is the best temp for low times. I don't necessarily enjoy the pre-race so much, but I run my best. You really nailed it this weekend. Has to feel great.

Be a little careful stretching cold muscles and doing more stretching before a race than you would normally do. Can pull muscles that way. I tend to just warmup (walk, jog) at the beginning of a workout instead of stretching. I'll stretch in the evening or after a run if I need it.

Damn, Chuck. You look great. Hope this doesn't impact the menu at the next Wharfstock. I mean, even skinny guys get to eat steak, right???

By the way, your friend has brother Dave M.'s (nypeachhead) profile.

Interesting.. I would think NOT stretching would pull something.
With the cooler weather, this is really something I am trying to keep in mind.

I have a another race on Saturday.Kinda interesting though. We get on a train, and where ever we get off at we have to run back.
The choices are 2.5 miles, 4.3 and 6.

2.5 is out of the question
4.3 or 6 will be a race day decision.

Well, I've taken a different approach to my wellness, at least initially...I'm seeing a nutritionist who is using Whole Food Supplements to get my system back on track.

I just finished my initial two weeks Liver Enhancement and I've dropped a total of 18 lbs since Sept. 7th.

For me, eating properly is the first step to overall wellness.

You too Chuck! As well as all the other fitness buffs here...

I haven't posted here in awhile, but I am still hitting the gym 4- 5 times a week and maintaining at around 170 lbs.

Wellness rocks...

page 11 eh?
Hope you guys aren't slacking off!

Doing OK here.
Ran another 5K this past Saturday, only shaved 2 seconds off my PR. Wasn't happy, and will look for redemption on my next run
Added a little intensity to the weight training (and incorporated some of Bird's advice)
I can definitely feel some muscle building goin on

Down 225 now, about 55 to go till goal ( though with the muscle building, that's negotiable)

Hope you guys are hanging in there!

Too busy working out to post. Had a good one last night, moved up in weights this week and running times are coming down a bit. Going to start increasing distance little by little. Great work ratboy.

so there is a couple of young guys in the gym, wear shirts Lifting For Jesus shirts (or something like that).... they are training for competition in January against the full spectrum, roids and all, they are clean and well, lifting for Creator, which is very cool. Every time I max on squat it is after a prayer and with God's help. Anyhow, these kids are like working out like insane people, intensity to be marvelled. So of course with the years I've played the game and in some serious gyms, I have stolen and memorized every trick in the book on lifting. So I see a dozen things I want to tell them on training but keep my mouth shut.

Anyhow, I told the one guy that for chest, make heavy (HEAVY) flyes your main number one chest, de-emphasize bench. So he did and he was like sore for days and couldn't believe how intense it was and so that was fun, educating the young. I saw him 3 days later and he was still sore, haha.

Congrats WharfRat on another PR! Your times may not drop in a straight line. They rarely do for people; so knocking a few seconds off your best is great.

I'm 23 days out from my first marathon. I did 12 slow with my Wed morning running group this morning. 208 last month. I have a fast 22 mile run planned for this Sunday and then I'll taper down from there to race day. I've endured sore/hurt groin and hamstrings but shouldn't prevent me from hitting my goal.

Haven't been hitting the gym as much as I want but will some over the next few weeks and more after my race. Keep up the good work everyone.

Ego trip post, skip if offended.....

Haven't had a physical in 20 months and had one today. So doc hasn't seen me since last time, which was just after I started working out again after over ten years off. So I was still pretty weak then.

So part way into talking to me about all the test results (all good), he looks at me and asks if I am on steroids. So I guess the weights are paying off. All Natural Almost 56 Old Guy Lifter, haha. He asked if I was setting moderate goals and I told him no, I wanted to be the toughest old guy in town, and I keep setting biggger goals. He thinks I am whacked. I am.

Too funny bird. I had a physical last spring and the lady looked at me funny when taking my pulse. She asked if I exercised, I said yes, and that I try to eat right, even if I eat too much of it. She said my waking pusle was lower than hers when she is asleep. At our age (I just turned 55) it's great to be taking care of ourselves. It really starts to show in thos who don't about now. Use it or lose it!

New personal squat weight officially today: Finally moved up in weight, after plateauing, then messing knee up a bit, didn't play out time wise, but today was the move up, amazing when you are maxing how 20 pounds up is gigantic. So put 405 on and did a two rep set, first rep so so depth, second not bad, need improvement, but better than I thought would go. The cool thing is once I move up, I never go back. That is why I am so methodical on it how I progress. Goal is 500 by end of 2012. We'll see! I like how the bar bends with these weights

Way to go bird! Hope everyone stays with it over the winter months. I've started focusing more on interval training with my running rather than distance. I'm liiking it! Staying with my lighter weights-higher reps for now.

Keep at it Bird. And I still want to see you getting in some cardio!

Have my first marathon on Saturday in Huntsville, AL. Should be low 30s at the start of the race and likely high 30s at the end. I wouldn't mind 5-8 degrees warmer but not bad. Only rolling hills but the headwind is sometimes an issue in this race.

I did 208 miles in October, followed by 215 in November. That's basically 49 miles/week. I did (4) training runs between 20-23.2 miles, (1) 18 miler, + my Ragnar relay in mid-September (23.5 miles over 3 legs). Hoping I can hold a 7:15 pace for 26.2. I did it for 17 straight in my last long training run. I'm going to give it a try either way!

Ouch, the weekend forecast for Huntsville just got update to a low of 26 for Saturday. That means we'll be at or below 30 for the start of the race and probably mid-30s at the end of the race. I don't mind running in the cold but I don't care for below freezing.

I added the weight I totally lifted yesterday. In an hour and a half, I lifted 12,865 pounds.

My last set was 225 X 16 as a finisher. After that set (and the other heavy ones 8 set total) It took me 10 full minutes to get my breathing and heart rate back to normal. I think my heart is kickin in those sessions.

But yeah, I need real cardio, I know

WOW

Good luck with your race Tim!

Most of my running has been indoors now unfortunately. Just too cold.
I do have a 5K on Saturday though..

I do have a 5 mile "Polar Bear" race on NYE though.
And yes, that means jumping into the ocean afterward

I haven't posted here in awhile , but I am still hitting the gym 4- 5 times a week and maintaining at around 170 lbs. Alternating days weight training with aerobics.

I wish I could run as some of you folks do but my knees will only allow speed walking (I can do 2 miles in 30 minutes flat) or bicycling (I can knock off 15 miles in about 50 minutes or so, and a typical ride for me is 15 to 18 miles).

As I've gotten older, I've gotten a lot more used to creature comforts so almost all my biking this time of year is in the climate controlled gym, but I still try to approximate my outdoor speed/time and still manage to work up a sweat...

Just wanted you all to know I'm still with you...

Just got back from working out, felt great today! Did 35 minutes on the elliptical. Have added 35-45 minutes of cardio on days between weights, nothing too strenuous or serious. I'm liking it. Hope everyone is still at it.
