Atta boy Wharfy! Good job!

Swam 6 X 200 yards today doing flip turns for the first time. About the third piece when I started getting the hang of it, confidence and strength improved. Flip turns definitely make you more efficient in the pool. The kicker is timing your breath and your stroke... kind of like sex!

Heres to a Rock N' Roll weekend! The Road Goes On Forever!

This week: bought a couple more tens to add to the home weights. I keep adding so I can have 3 stages of dumbells set up, light, medium, heavy, that way adding weights is just adding a couple few to one set. Did a weird shoulder delt workout at home this week, used curl bar and front of neck lift above head. The short bar loaded up felt really good motion.

Did first heavy bag workout in 25 years tonight, only a couple rounds. When young doing it serious I always did rounds, 3 minutes. It felt great tonight, except need to build hands up. Back in the day when I trained I had my hands built up to my knuckles being one big callous, I could hit bricks and not bleed. So tonight the elbows, shoulders, wrists all felt great. Hands felt wussy. But the old snap was there amazingly.

Started out body shot level easy punches, left hooks, right same, warmed up on a bunch. Tried snappy left hook to head level, and a straight right. That took more focus. After a bit had the straight rights snapping good. Then the test. Many think left jabs (if a righty) are an easy punch. They are incredibly hard done well. Snap, bring it back real quick to protect, be able to snap three and four before opponent even thinks. Whap whap whap whap, protect. Whap whap, straight right. Did jab, straight rights a bunch of times, always back to protection mode, mix in a left hook...... if you can't tell it felt like the old daze and I think I'm flippin George Foreman now, king of the old battleships this is going to be fun mixing the bag in.

First running day today in two months. Going to start from square 1 and ease my way back into things. No hills for a few weeks. The legs needed the rest.

The goal is to run some 10Ks and/or the mud run in Mammoth next summer.

Last night at gym, did deadlifts after not doing them for years really. So I had the bar set up with weights and this young fellow comes over. It was Scott, about 24, a friend of my boy Derek, who most know is in heaven. So he joined gym recently, is getting started first time on weights, saw me and came over for advice. I know Derek was looking down smiling and it was a very very joyous thing for me to help the young man.

Started my lifestyle change this morning with a healthy breakfast and a 2 mile walk. Was diagnosed with diabetes (bsl 467) Tuesday of this week so I have plenty of work to do. Anyone else a diabetic? If so, any tips or what not would be greatly appreciated. I am having a lot of info being thrown at me and itís kinda hard to wrap my head around it all at the moment.

Gym in a half hour. Did chest and tri's last night. Going to blast biceps today.

Why working out is great:

Had TWO different guys at gym this week at seperate times ask me if I was 50 yet. Since I am 55 I think that is a good sign.

Weight now 198 and pants fit looser at waist than when 188 couple months ago, but legs are tighter. Ha!

Not what I expected today but at least I got in the pool and did some laps. It sure seems with swimming that you'll know right away if you're going to have a good workout or you're going to struggle... and struggling sucks.

At least I got in two decent runs and two decent swims this week. I'm taking the weekend off!

Keep the Faith everyone and keeping getting out there. Exercise keeps your vigor and keeps you youthful. That's what being an Allman Brothers fan is all about!

At the very least, check your blood regularly. Keep up the walks. It's important to keep the circulation working and efficient. If you need to lose weight, lose it. Not all at once but if you figure you can lose a pound a week, that's 50 pounds in a year. All the best to ya and Keep The Faith!

Squat day. It was death. Even the middle weights were heavy. Wanted to wuss out on the max poundage but didn't. I think workouts when you are like that are sometimes the most beneficial. Was asked if I am a powerlifter tonight. I had to carefully explain I am an old guy

Did a 38:35 10K on a moderate course on Labor Day, good for 4th in the 40-44 age group. I ran 40 miles last week and didn't really taper so I was pleased. It was 70 degrees with 88 percent humidity, so not ideal conditions. Jogged back to the car an hour later to make it an 11-mile day. Hit the gym for 45 minutes of bicep, back & abs last night.

Did 5.3 slow miles this morning and I was stiff and sore!

Ready now for my Ragnar Relay late next week in San Fran/Napa (3 segments in 24 hours totally 21 miles). Then I need to focus on a weekly long run to get ready for my first marathon in December.

I'm not taking this "getting middle aged" thing lying down!

It was HOT HOT HOT out on the road today but got in just over three miles. Good relaxing pace to work up a good sweat and expunge some of the evils I ingested this weekend.

Tomorrow it's back in the pool.

I'm so jealous of you guys. Had a setback with a minor illness just when I was ready to get back in the gym. This last month has been total frustration. I'm shooting for Monday. Send some positive vibes my way for health and some good workouts.

A little update for those not on FB..

Just ran for my 5th day in a row
I have never done that before. My right hip is not very happy with me right now

Only lost 5 lbs in the last month. Typical summertime distractions as far as diet goes. Tons of exercise though. I feel quite a bit of muscle building, so I think this is part of it as well.
Total loss is @ 215. Feeling really good about that. Getting a load of comments from everyone, even total strangers.

Starting to think harder about my 2012 goals..
Mud Run?
10K Run?
1/2 marathon?

Time will tell

Hang in there fellas! Fall is a GREAT time to get outside and kick some ass!

WharfRat - that is very inspirational. Keep up the great work!

This thing called exercise can be a fun way of life. I was with a running group yesterday morning for a very hilly 11-miler. I stuck with the guys near the back doing 9:15 minute miles. One was in his early 50s and the other two were in their 60s. All had a Fall marathon planned.

They were also part of a big group that is hiking rim to rim at the Grand Canyon sometime in the next year. No slowing down for these guys. They all got into running in their late 30s and had not even been joggers before that. I am certain they are more productive in work & life because of their passion for exercise.

Hope those on the mend are feeling better soon. Keep up the good work y'all.

Last Sunday: squats to 385 no 405 yet.
Monday: walked 6 miles.
Tuesday: right knee hurt from more walk than I usually do (4 mile typical)
Wenesday: veg knee sore
Thursday: Shoulders heavy press
Friday: veg
Saturday: Chest heavy flyes & Tri heavy pullovers
Today: Back bent rows and pulldowns
Putting off squat till Tuesday due to knee, will go medium & rep focus for one week
Tomorrow morning: bicep, forearm

I listed main power moves as examples, other lifts done after those as lesser ones.

And that is just how the body parts worked out, every week I mix it up different on what with what or by itself and different excercizes as much as possible. Splitting it so much into specific parts and about once a week max on each allows max blast and recovery. It is just what works for me and allows to go as heavy as possible on everything, every week pretty much.

I strongly suggest switching from machines to free weights to those who have lifted a bit. The only machine I work in is pulley for finishing stuff. The free weight factor of balance and stability is huge. Plus power moves always bring into play torso strength and conditioning. Example, leg press machines do nothing for building torso strength. Squats do immensly.

Put the money up on Friday. Joined the gym at the Parker Meridien hotel in midtown NYC. I work across the street. Need to have gym close and convenient or I'll never get started.

Going for my assessment with a trainer (body fat, cardio, etc) by Tuesday. Im a ballpark 280 right now, so first priority for me is trimming down. Still a big dude and can squat a bunch, but gut outshines all the rest of me at this point.

Hell, can't let Chuck get so far ahead of me! By the way, will be keeping my 2008 Wharfstock shirt at the gym for extra motivation.

Rubba
