Last refuge? Or just the simple truth?

Crying Bigotry: Last Refuge Of The Liberal

By CHARLES KRAUTHAMMER Posted 08/26/2010 07:00 PM ET

Liberalism under siege is an ugly sight indeed. Just yesterday it was all hope and change and returning power to the people. But the people have proved so disappointing. Their recalcitrance has, in only 19 months, turned the 40-year liberal ascendancy that James Carville predicted into a full retreat.

Ah, the people, the little people, the small-town people, the "bitter" people, as Barack Obama in an unguarded moment once memorably called them, clinging "to guns or religion or" this part is less remembered "antipathy toward people who aren't like them."

That's a polite way of saying: clinging to bigotry. And promiscuous charges of bigotry are precisely how our current rulers and their vast media auxiliary react to an obstreperous citizenry that insists on incorrect thinking.

Resistance to the vast expansion of government power, intrusiveness and debt, as represented by the Tea Party? Why, racist resentment toward a black president.

Disgust and alarm with the federal government's unwillingness to curb illegal immigration, as crystallized in the Arizona law? Nativism.

Opposition to the most radical redefinition of marriage in human history, as expressed in Proposition 8 in California? Homophobia.

Opposition to a 15-story Islamic center and mosque near Ground Zero? Islamophobia.

Now we know why the country has become "ungovernable," last year's excuse for the Democrats' failure of governance: Who can possibly govern a nation of racist, nativist, homophobic Islamophobes?

Note what connects these issues. In every one, liberals have lost the argument in the court of public opinion. Majorities often lopsided majorities oppose President Obama's social-democratic agenda (e.g., the stimulus, ObamaCare), support the Arizona law, oppose gay marriage and reject a Ground Zero mosque.

What's a liberal to do? Pull out the bigotry charge, the trump that pre-empts debate and gives no credit to the seriousness and substance of the contrary argument.

The most venerable of these trumps is, of course, the race card. When the Tea Party arose, a spontaneous, leaderless and perfectly natural (and traditionally American) reaction to the vast expansion of government intrinsic to the president's proudly proclaimed transformational agenda, the liberal commentariat cast it as a mob of angry white yahoos disguising their antipathy to a black president by cleverly speaking in economic terms.

Then came Arizona and SB 1070. It seems impossible for the left to believe that people of good will could hold that: (a) illegal immigration should be illegal, (b) the federal government should not hold border enforcement hostage to comprehensive reform, i.e., amnesty, (c) every country has the right to determine the composition of its immigrant population.

As for Proposition 8, is it so hard to see why people might believe that a single judge overturning the will of 7 million voters is an affront to democracy? And that seeing merit in retaining the structure of the most ancient and fundamental of all social institutions is something other than an alleged hatred of gays particularly since the opposite-gender requirement has characterized virtually every society in all the millennia until just a few years ago?

And now the Ground Zero mosque. The intelligentsia are near unanimous that the only possible grounds for opposition is bigotry toward Muslims. This smug attribution of bigotry to two-thirds of the population hinges on the insistence on a complete lack of connection between Islam and radical Islam, a proposition that dovetails perfectly with the Obama administration's pretense that we are at war with nothing more than "violent extremists" of inscrutable motive and indiscernible belief.

Those who reject this as both ridiculous and politically correct (an admitted redundancy) are declared Islamophobes, the ad hominem du jour.

It is a measure of the corruption of liberal thought and the collapse of its self-confidence that, finding itself so widely repudiated, it resorts reflexively to the cheapest race-baiting (in a colorful variety of forms).

Indeed, how can one reason with a nation of pitchfork-wielding mobs brimming with "antipathy toward people who aren't like them" blacks, Hispanics, gays and Muslims a nation that is, as Michelle Obama once put it, "just downright mean"?

The Democrats are going to get beaten badly in November. Not just because the economy is ailing. And not just because Obama over-read his mandate in governing too far left. But because a comeuppance is due the arrogant elites whose undisguised contempt for the great unwashed prevents them from conceding a modicum of serious thought to those who dare oppose them.

Whether you're from the right or left side of the debate, one thing is sure. Leadership can not for long govern against the majority will of the people. This is how revolutions begin, as history clearly shows. Strife, lack of opportunity, combined with out-of-touch leadership has been the recipe for many a leader to meet their end.

That's what I was thinking. Interesting that we didn't have all this 'dissent' until the first black president was elected.

Krauthammer certainly has excellent command of the english language. "Crying Bigotry, Last refuge of the liberal". Sorry but, bigotry is bigotry and associating it with the Tea Party Express has become a problem. A problem for the National Tea Party Federation not the liberals as Krauthammer defines them.

The thing I don't like about claiming bigotry is that it is so easy to do, and nearly impossible to defend against. Once that charge is made intellectual discussions of reasonable differences are essentially cut off.

People like Krauthammer accuse the left of crying bigotry a heck of a lot more then the left in reality actually cries bigotry.

I'd like to have a dollar for every time a couple of posters here have used the words bigot, racist, prejudiced.

It'd be better than winning the Powerball

The majority in this country seems to feel that whoever is president is the wrong guy. As long as cable news stations irresponsibly present opinion as fact, that will continue.

If so many Americans were as bigoted as the Liberals always love to claim, we wouldn't have a black President at all, much less one with a Muslim sounding name.

"That's what I was thinking. Interesting that we didn't have all this 'dissent' until the first black president was elected."

So the guy wins a higher percentage of the vote than most Dems ever but now some of those same voters(especially Independents) have turned on him and it's race based?? What a load. Of course those who disagree with a Clarence Thomas can't be called racist. They just have honest disagreements.

What it boils down to is when voters want to throw the bums out and the bums are Republican, it's all about Hope and Change or no rhythm white folks(Bill and Al) swaying to Don't Stop Thinking about Tomorrow. When voters want to throw the bums out and they are Dems, it's about Angry White Males(1994) or racist Tea Partiers

This thread may or may not be over but we can bet this congress is almost over

Your hypothesis fails to consider half the eligible population doesn't even vote.

There is no bigotry. There is no racism. There's only one cause of what's wrong with our country, and that's the liberals.

There's not one person who calls themself conservative or Republican who exhibits any negative traits whatsoever. Only they have all the answers. The first and foremost answer to everything, everywhere, is liberals are evil. Conversely, those who call themselves conservative or Republican are the closest thing to perfection one will find on Earth. Liberals are evil. When the Republicans take Congress back, the skies will open in great choirs of sunlight and angels as the country shall be delivered from the bondage of which it was cast by the evil liberals. Within 24 hours of the new Congress taking its seat, America will be whole again. With a little luck and a little divine providence, Reagan shall rise from the grave.

Hey, if esteemed intellectual elites like Krauthammer can indulge in the generalizations, let's all buy in.

We're so screwed.

What a load is right.... nowhere has anyone said that Obamas party is the ones that are coming out as racists. Its the Right. I havent seen or heard anyone that I would consider on the "left" as making the racist comments that we are discussing. That has been the domain of the Right (Teabaggers mostly) from day one.

Actually, what its going to boil down to is whether or not the Right wing lies and propaganda sway enough ignorant people (like it already has in the way of the polls) into believing so much nonsense. Misinformation and disinformation are the hallmarks of the Right and they will do whatever it takes to paint the left as dishonestly as possible. Most economists agree that the stimulus saved our economy, for example, but to hear the Right tell it, we are doomed (and how many RW mouthpieces are there spreading this bs in public like Beck, Limbaugh et al?) but they dont take a minute to tell those same people that it was Republican policies that got us here and that they want to continue those policies.

If you think Im kidding or trolling, feel free to pick any candidate from the Right/Teabaggers and we can discuss their platform. Ive made this offer to a few folks here but strangely nobody has taken me up on it. I think they know the answers just as well as I do but they largely agree with those people so they dont want to talk about it.

Interesting that up until this President was elected, "dissent" was viewed as noble and patriotic. Now it's racism. Pretty strange flip-flop. Millions of voters suddenly converting into bigots over the last 19 months. VERY strange.

You really don't know the difference between dissent and racism, alloak? The millions you refer to were bigots all along. You don't think they are bigots now, so you obviously didn't know it before. And if you call the fear-mongering and lying on the right "dissent," then it is easy to see why you are one of the right wingers.

Actually, before this President, dissent was considered unpatriotic and traitorous.

Those who disagree with those who dissent always find a way to characterize them in an unflattering way. Always been that way, always will. This isn't really all that new, is it?

Quite a broad brush you are painting with there, bob. Makes your statement untrue. You are only talking about the less intelligent among us....often found leaving comments on right wing websites.
