Iran unveils 'ambassador of death' bomber
But unmanned aircraft has 'message of peace,' President Ahmadinejad says

TEHRAN, Iran — Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad Sunday inaugurated the country's first domestically built long-range unmanned bomber aircraft, calling it an "ambassador of death" to Iran's enemies.

Speaking to a group of officials, Ahmadinejad said, "The jet, as well as being an ambassador of death for the enemies of humanity, has a main message of peace and friendship."

The goal of the aircraft is to "keep the enemy paralyzed in its bases," he said, adding that the jet is for deterrence and defensive purposes.

The president championed the country's military self-sufficiency program and said it will continue "until the enemies of humanity lose hope of ever attacking the Iranian nation."

The 4-meter-long unmanned plane, dubbed the Karrar, or striker, in Farsi, was inaugurated on the national day for the country's defense industry in a ceremony aired live on state TV.

No details were provided on the craft's capabilities.

In a speech at the unveiling ceremony, Ahmadinejad said Iran should seek the ability to make pre-emptive strikes against a perceived threat, although he said it would never strike first.

"If there is an ignorant person or an egoist or a tyrant who just wanted to make an aggression, then our Defense Ministry should reach a point where it could cut off the hand of the aggressor before it decided to make an aggression," he said.

"We should reach a point when Iran would serve as a defense umbrella for all freedom-loving nations in the face of world aggressors. We don't want to attack anywhere — Iran will never decide to attack anywhere — but our revolution cannot sit idle in the face of tyranny. We can't remain indifferent."

Iran has been producing its own light unmanned surveillance aircraft since the late 1980s.

Nuclear fears
The ceremony came a day after Iran began to fuel its first nuclear power reactor , with the help of Russia, amid international concerns over the possibility of a military dimension to its nuclear program.

Iran insists it is interested only in generating electricity.

Referring to Israel's occasional threats against Iran's nuclear facilities, Ahmadinejad called any attack unlikely, but he said if Israel did attack, the reaction would be overwhelming.

"The scope of Iran's reaction will include the entire earth," said Ahmadinejad. "We also tell you — the West — that all options are on the table."

Ahmadinejad appeared to be consciously echoing the terminology used by the U.S. and Israel in their statements not ruling out a military option against Iran's nuclear facilities.

On Friday, Iran also test-fired a new liquid fuel surface-to-surface missile, the Qiam-1, with advanced guidance systems.

Since 1992, Iran has also produced its own tanks, armored personnel carriers, missiles, torpedoes and a fighter plane. It frequently makes announcements about advances in military technology that cannot be independently verified.

Iran launched an arms development program during its 1980-88 war with Iraq to compensate for a U.S. weapons embargo.

They feel justifiably persecuted. Al Qaeda wants Iran and Israel to be at war. If the ruling regime in Iran gets taken down, perhaps a Shia country would change to a Sunni country. The US wants to take down Iran, even Saudi Arabia wants the US to take down Iran. So who is on Iran's side? Russia, Venezuela, and a few other countries.

They know war will come to their shores, and they will give an all out effort to preserve their country as it is.

Perhaps if their political dialogue wasn't always filled with "death to Israel" intentions, they wouldn't have to worry about war.

nah, constantly pledging to wipe a country off the map...hosting holocaust denial conferences and threatening war and death on an every day basis cant be the reason for irans problems....has anyone ever seen an example of a country openly threatening to destroy another country on a constant basis?other than perhaps the nazi's in the 1930s?Iran is on a course to create a world wide crisis that cannot end well for anyone.....about time we wake up and stop them before it is too late

Anyone else notice the striking similarities to the Nazi V1 "Buzz Bomb?" If the sanctions don't get em, or the long threatened Israeli/American air strikes don't work, I say we sue them for patent infringement. Don't believe the hype, folks......

It kind of looks like the thing that killed Ming in Flash Gordon.

If these people weren’t so absurd, they would be funny. I mean look at that guy standing next to Amaninadinnerjacket. He looks like he puts meatballs in his water. It’s also funny to see a “holy man” (the guy on the far left) looking so pleased at a weapon that can wreak havoc. “Ah, yes, I ring my hands in anticipation of killing jews.”

Today's paper said "the 13-foot drone aircraft can carry up to four cruise missiles and will have a range of 620 miles, according to a state TV report - not far enough to reach archenemy Israel."

Not sure about the accuracy of this statement. Iran could just be saying that to avoid being bombed by Israel for having the capabilities to bomb them, or maybe the wording of the article is confusing. Is Iran factoring in the range of the missiles when they say the bomber has a range of 620 miles? Maybe the bomber will run out of fuel at 620, but the missiles can go another undeterminable distance (?)

Of all the things to worry about with regard to Iran, a UAV isnt one of them just yet. Again, lets let Israel worry about Israel. They have had no problems in the past defending themselves against Iraq and Im sure Iran is not any different. Everyone is wringing their hands over Iran. When they reach a point where its time to stop them, they will be stopped, but if you think Iraq was a mess, wait until we step foot in Iran.

Huh? Bush was a Born Again Christian and had no problem killing tens of thousands. Its perfectly appropriate for a 'religious man' to be supportive of things like this. Religion has been the catalyst for wars since time began.

True. But I don't think we'd see the Pope or any religious figurehead standing next to Bush next to a recently unveiled cruise missile. But I see your point.

The only reason the Vatican is its own country is because of Benito Mussolini. The Pope, and Catholics, have a murdering dictator to thank for much of their wealth. I bet if I go looking, I can find a picture of a Pope standing next to Mussolini.

ZZZZZZZz, can you ever get through a thread without throwing Bush under the bus for something? For the record, Bush and Americans did not plant IEDs, drive trucks laden with explosives into crowded areas of civilians, chop off heads of people on film, and kill thousands of innocents as you like to say. Yes, there were some screw ups like in any other war, but the narrative you spew is disingenuous. The aforementioned killing of thousands was perpetrated by extremist Muslims. They did it to their own people. They did it before we got there, and they will do it after we leave. They are animals and they always will be.

I don't know this for a fact, but it wouldn't surprise me to find out the Catholic Church has accumulated more wealth than any other entity on this planet. I doubt the Pope is worried about where his next meal will come from. Just the real estate they own probably dwarfs any other accumulation of wealth.

Depends on how they got all that land.
