Well seeing as how i'm the shy one, i would like to restart this thread.

From Chapter 5 in the Big Book

"Our stories disclose in a general way what we used to be like, what happened, and what we are like now. "

This reminds me of what the other thread was basically like. In researching the thread i had notice that even people who have been on the site since 2002 and have only 217 post, 797 posts, 185 posts, 378 posts etc. etc. were posting on the thread. So there seems to be a need for people with a common interest in sobriety to meet and i hope this helps.................

Share your stories if you like or just sit back and listen.....all are welcome!

Thanks for restarting the thread, sonnystang.

I hope people will respect what we're doing here and leave their BS to the WP.

I would like to personally thank all of the good folks who reached out to me because of the last thread. All your PM's and posts we're appreciated greatly.

No Dave, but I have cut way back and I quit smoking.

I'm still drinking two to three shots a day of straight whiskey, to be perfectly honest.

But a few weeks ago it was much more.

Anybody seen Crazy Heart yet? It's a great movie and has a good plot about alcoholism set to the story of a broken down country singer. The ending leaves the viewer with the feeling that there is hope.

I missed it in the theaters but I'm hoping to see it soon.

Did you ever see Tender Mercies?

Oh yes, it's one of my top 5 all time favorite movies. The plot in Crazy Heart is reminiscent of Tender Mercies. And Robert Duvall has a part in Crazy Heart, too.

Hey Anna, I remember when I was in my controlled drinking phase. That was the last straw before the bottom fell out for me, when I realized once and for all I was not in control. If you find out it's the same way for you. we're here for 'ya. Being honest is the best policy.

True, Dave, the "controlled drinking" phase is one most of us go through.

I used to go to a program called "Moderation Management". We met once a week and went around the room, sharing our stories (sort of like in AA). The big difference was that we were allowed to have 6 drinks a week (for women, anyway, a few more for men, and NOT all in one night).

Anyway, I eventually did go back to my six drinks a night (if not much much more) and the founder of Moderation Management eventually started drinking again, was driving drunk when she found herself on the wrong side of the road and hit and killed some people going in the opposite direction.

So much for Moderation Management.

The good news is, when you started moderating or counting your drinks or similar tactics, it's a start. Eventually, if you're a real alcoholic, it'll spin out of control again and, God willing, that'll be the the beginning of the end. The bad news is, you have to stay alive long enough to make it to the other side.

Anna, you gotta get to the other side. We're all here for you.

I remember not being able to imagine a day without drinking, let alone the rest of my life. The very idea seemed tragic. Now I can't imagine trading this wonderful life without substances for anything. It is the difference between living a little more each day and dying a little more each day. Every minute, every hour, every day makes a difference.

Was asked to repost this on the new thread. Hopefully it will help.
Okay, well here goes ... somebody may think this is not positive, but print it out and reread it. It will give you a very different perspective. Just a little about me first ... began using rx drugs @ 10 and added alcohol @ 12. Tried to get clean and sober several times before I succeeded. I was what you would call a functional addict/alcoholic. Have been clean & sober 28 years, 6 months and 6 days.

I AM YOUR DISEASE

I hate meetings. I hate a Higher Power. I hate everyone who has a program. To all who come in contact with me ... I wish you suffering and I wish you death. Allow me to introduce myself . . . I am the disease of ADDICTION, cunning, baffling, and powerful, that's me.

I have KILLED MILLIONS and I am pleased. I love to catch you with the element of surprise. I love pretending I am your friend and lover. I have given you comfort, have I not? Wasn't I there when you were lonely? When you wanted to die didn't you call me? I was there. I love to make you hurt. I love to make you cry.

Better yet, I love to make you so numb you can neither hurt nor cry. When you can feel nothing at all, this is true glory. I will give you instant gratification and all I ask of you is long term suffering. I've been there for you always. When things were going right in your life, you invited me. You said you didn't deserve these good things, and I was the ONLY ONE who would agree with you. Together we were able to DESTROY ALL THINGS GOOD in your life.

People don't take me seriously. They take strokes seriously, heart attacks seriously, even diabetes they take seriously. Fools that they are, they don't know that without my help many of these things would not be made possible. I am such a hated disease, and yet ... I do not come uninvited. YOU CHOOSE TO HAVE ME. So many have chosen me over REALITY and PEACE. More than you hate me, I hate all of you who have a Twelve Step Program.

Your program, your meetings, your Higher Power ALL WEAKEN ME and I can't function in the manner I am accustomed. Now I must lie here quietly. You don't see me, BUT I AM GROWING BIGGER THAN EVER.

When you only exist, I may live. When you live, I only exist, BUT I AM HERE . . . and until we meet again, if we meet again, I WISH YOU SUFFERING AND DEATH!

Realizing this is addiction talking and this is how "he, she, it" feels is really helping me to stay clean, sober, and straight.

If you need me, I am here for you. I am so proud of everyone who participates and is trying to clean up his/her life. Please, always know you are welcome here and keep coming back, not matter what.

Peace and love,
Casey

You're welcome.

Having a clear head in the morning is only one of the wonderful things about being sober! Who can name some more?

Sonny thanks for restarting the thread. It's a shame the other one went so far south that it had to come to this but I'm sure glad we're starting over.

Had my doctor's appointment yesterday. My doctor was not only very pleased with the latest developments but he was also fairly impressed that it was cold turkey and I've come this far in the short time since I last saw him. He said we can certainly treat my pain without narcotics and he's more than glad to provide me with injections and stuff like that. He wants to see how I progress in the next 6 weeks at which point he said he may want to send me to a psychologist depending on how the pain is doing just to see if maybe I've got some anger that manifested itself as back pain which evidently isn't unusual. The only weird part of this is that he did say if need be the option would be there for me to go back to the pain meds if enough time goes by and the pain is still as intense as it is now. I told him I didn't think I'd be taking that route.

Everything is falling into place guys and I couldn't be happier. My exercising has increased to the point where I'm doing just under 3 miles a day walking so there's definitely progress which is about all I can ask for.

I wish health and happiness for all of us who are struggling. I'm here for whoever needs it. God bless folks, all of you.

Oh WOW Vic!!! That is GREAT news. I am so happy for you. Anger can manifest itself as pain? I'd like to know more about that. Man, that's just great.

Anna, you hang in there girl.

I've never seen the "I'm your disease", very poignant. Very true.

I think of ya'll every day, everyone here. I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers for daily strength and success.

Casey...Thanks for the post of the "Disease Letter"....I remember reading it 13-14 years ago in rehab and it didn't make a lot of sense then. With 10 years of sobriety now, it makes all the sense in the world.
