Another tragedy:

Texas fan Shannon Stone fell trying to get a ball, hit his head and died in front of his little boy last night. Josh Hamilton tossed him a ball and the guy fell trying to grab it.

Tragic.

David Ortiz is an idiot.

Started a brawl with the Orioles in the 8th in a 10-3 game.

2-1 count Orioles pitcher Gregg threw a belt high inside fastball to keep Oritz from crowding the plate. That is not throwing at Oritiz, That's baseball, yet the big showoff made a big deal of it. Pointing and yelling at Gregg.

Next pitch Ortiz flys out , Gregg tells him to run down to first and stop showing off and he charges Gregg. Both throw punches neither really connects.

4 Players ejected in the brawl, because Ortiz is a big baby, and a showoff.

John -

Did you see the interview with Josh Beckett? Talk about an idiot!

From Beckett: "Maybe they were upset that we scored 8 runs on them in the first inning so they decided to start throwing at our f*cking heads".

And last night Francona has his pitcher plunk Derrek Lee. He got hit but didn't go ape **** like Ortiz did over simply an inside pitch.

Oh, and how about CAPTAIN 3000

Just cool thing happened as well. The dude that caught the ball gave it back to Derek. This guy could have most likely received a huge payday from this, but chose to "do the right thing"
I would imagine DJ and the Yanks took care of the guy for his generosity.

Very very cool

Free box tickets through the season and playoffs (?not sure if that would also include World series)

And leave it to Derek. He knows timing. Could be his only 5 hit game and last homer of the year. Somehow, he always makes it count. Highest "intangible" rating I've ever seen

That said; the Yankees will regret this contract sooner rather than later.

Looks like the Tigers are tied for first going into the break. Just wish they would permanently bench Brandon Inge I dont care how good u r on defense u cant hit under .225 and expect to play.

On Ortiz someone should throw him some chin music

I must say I am surprisingly dissapointed in Derek Jeter.

He's played every inning for a week, just got his 3,000th hit and he can't even show up at the All-Star game to tip his cap and sign autographs at the least?

I find that terrible. I'd be really bummed if I was one of the millions of his fans that voted for him.

Tygz have 4 hitters in the top 9, Verlander & Schezer in the rotation & Valverde (24 saves) lights out closer -- they don't really seem to be going anywhere though -- Sawx looking good, 6 straight going into the break -- Dontrelle Willis having another fling at it, this time w/the Reds -- maybe he, Jake Peavy, Barry Zito, Bartolo Colon etc etc will find their once-great games in the second half

yeah people are bailing on the All Star game left & right, by the look of it...

I wonder what's happened to the 2010 phenom, Stephen Strasburg & whether he's still on schedule for a 2012 comeback after two years away for arm surgery...

There was an encouraging quote in yesterday's paper attributed to one of his teammates, Jordan Zimmerman -- paraphrasing, " 'my slider was probably the best it's ever been," Zimmerman said after seven shutout innings continuing his impressive comeback from reconstructive arm surgery..."

so, these surgeries sometimes do work out well -- not so much so far for Joe Nathan -- wonder how Dice-K will do -- am no doctor but it does seem like these surgeries are more involved extensive & frequent than they have to be -- tears & stuff can heal on their own, depending on how serious of course --

but at any rate hopefully it works out well for Strasburg too, then the Sens will have two brand-new pitchers, arms & all...
hopefully he'll be MLB's Blake Griffin -- highly-touted top draft pick, injured upon arrival, missed first year but played great upon returning...

Dude.. This guy has been nothing short of a Ambassador to the game for 15 years. Shown at every AS Game other then when he was hurt. An example that all other athletes to follow.
The guy deserves a break.

Not to mention ( and it hurts to say this) but he really didnt deserve to be there. And I am sure he realizes that.

I'm not questioning his past at all or what he has meant to the game. I think you know how much I like and respect him. I've defended him against other opinions here.

I just think he could have hopped on a private jet, flown out there and waived his cap.

"Emotional and physical fatigue" seems like a crummy excuse to me. But hey, the All-Star game doesn't seem to mean as much as it used to and a lot of people in baseball acknowledge that.

If I were one of his biggest fans (and think about it, how many kids ADORE him), I would be really bummed even if he couldn't play.

You know what though? When you're an ambassador and you're a high caliber player and an incredibly highly visible player and you've been voted in by the fans, you don't get a break. You go to the game and do your part.

I'm a huge DJ fan. I think he's had a brilliant career and he's great for the game and great for NY and the Yankees, but he messed this one up.

And BTW, from what exactly does he need a break? Playing baseball? C'mon.

Justin Verlander couldn't participate in the game because he pitched Sunday. He didn't have to go since he was not allowed to play.

On his dime, he rented a private jet, flew all of the Tiger participants as well as the lone Royal guy that made it (not sure how they picked him up ) to the game and back.

And Verlander was in uniform leaning on the top rail of the dugout last night. I thought that was really cool.

Happy Friday...we're back to baseball tonight!

Things are looking up in Beantown...Beckett is going to make his start on Sunday, Crawford will do a rehab assignment this weekend and rejoin the team in Baltimore on Monday, Lester has started throwing and should be ready to go by the end of next week, and Buchholz sounds like he's about ready to start it back up again (although he'll need a rehab start or two so realistically he is probably still a few weeks away at best). Big Papi is going to appeal his 4 game suspension, maybe get a game knocked off...Balt, Seattle and KC coming up so at least the timing is better for him to sit out than if it was the yanks, Cleveland, etc.

Clemens mistrial...what a collossal screw up by the prosecution. Sounds like it will be Sept before any decision is made on a retrial...if they don't do a retrial, what does that mean for his HoF chances? No positive tests, no hard evidence (ok, that is an arguable point, but the defense was going to make the case that the needles, etc were all faked), he said/he said conflicting accounts, no admission of anything. Will be interesting (if not sad) to watch it play out.

If there's a more athletic human being on this planet than Ben Revere I've never seen him -- slipped and fell, catwheeled out of it & dove in for the triple without losing a step -- damn!! The highlight reel of the year -- of course Capps had to go & blow the save, Again

Yep, the Bucs are playin' -- Kenny where ya at bro!

Go Sox -- the next two against this damn good TB club, are vital
