The length of Mattingly's career has always been the knock against him making The Hall. I don't understand that. As a point of reference, I would use Kirby Puckett as an example and he only played parts of 12 seasons but he is in. It's so subjective and there's no real barometer for what constitutes a lengthy career.

On the other hand, I have also heard that Blyleven only made it because of his lengthy career as Chuck points out, as well as Don Sutton and Phil Niekro among others.

Can you have it both ways? Regarding pitchers, some of the stats starters put up ending in about the 80s will likely never be matched because of how the game has changed. Mike Mussina and Jack Morris come to mind. When pitchers with ~200 wins start getting elected can they really keep out guys like the two I just mentioned?

I just dont see anyone winning 300 games anymore. The game has changed way too much. ( Not for the better, IMHO)
I think a pitcher starting out now would have to play 25+ years to hit 300. I think the 200-250 range could be the new 300.

I also see that after a weak HOF class next year ( Bernie Williams is the only significant additon, so Larkin should get elected)..

The 2013 class looks like this..
Bonds
Clemens
Sosa
Piazza

Should be veeeeeery interesting to say the least

Since retiremet 2 years ago, I have gotten more into Baseball than I have been since I played.
Living now on the East Coast in CT, smack between Red Sox Nation and The Evil Empire Yankees...or is it the other way around now with all the spending the Sox have done?
I have heard one arguement for Donnie Baseball which I can't ignor, and that is to compare his carreer to Sandy Koufak..in reverse. Sandy was horrible his first 5-6 years, and then was off the charts great ...for 6 years.
Mattingly did it in reverse. Six monster years, as good as any player has ever had, but the last 6 were terrible due to a back injury caused by Cliff Lee in the Locker room messing around (not many know that).
I truly believe if Donnie had his carreer in the reverse order, he would be in. Just like if Sandy had his career in reverse order, he may not have made it in.
Interesting debate I think.
Also...CC Sabathia has 157 wins at age 29. If he avg 16 wins over the next 8 seasons, he could reach 300 wins.
I'm just hoping my Orioles will comlete this year with Buck at the helm. I would love to see them return to our glory days when we were the class of the league. I won WS with a SS hitting .189, and a cather around .200 Ahhh, the days of defense up the middle, and pitching.

Lets see if this new Philles Pitching staff can compare to the O's in the 70's with 4 20 game winners! Count em...4!
I know, clinging to the past. But they are making this comparrision even before they throw one pitch as a staff.

NICE! Glad he's out of the AL East.

Man, the Rays are really going to suck this season.

Rafael Soriano is a Yankee

Not the starter they will looking for, but we now have a damn good Pen

And I am thinking Joba's days as a Yankee are numbered.

Hopefully Soriano picks up a few tricks from The Master and becomes the next closer

In Birdland, my O's signed Kevin Gregg.. he's not Mo, but hey...give us some time.
I would have loved Soriano too, but he is 30, and while he may pick up a thing or two, hes not the age you'll want a closer to be when Mo retires...in like 5 years!
I thought they would move Joba into rotation possibly, but your thinking he's gone?
hmm, never thought of that. Is he arbitration eligible this year? I'll take him!

I hope I am wrong, as I really like the guy. But I think the Yanks have destroyed this guy mentally.
I can see them maybe giving him another shot at being a starter if thier other youngsters falter in Spring.
But if they do it, they need to take the leash off the guy !! Enough already!
