Red Sox captain Jason Varitek, 38, who's spent his entire career in Boston, signs a one year, $2M contract...

Yankees captain Derek Jeter, 36, who's spent his entire career in NY, is holding out for a big score on George's kitty...

pretty opposite captaincies IMO -- the worst thing is that Jr. blinked, gave in to his demands and is increasing his original offer of three years/$45M -- money that Jeter knows he would never get elsewhere -- but he still wants more, as his skills decline --

Derek Jeter is a great great ballplayer & exemplary "role model" off the field -- a sure-fire first-ballot HOFer -- however, like Mariano he'll probably receive "icon" pay -- what he's meant to the franchise etc -- that's what Derek is demanding

both these players and their families are secure well into the future because of baseball -- Varitek appreciates that, Jeter does not

Except that Mo is a freak of nature as his skills have shown no sign of degrading. Not sure if any other closers are getting $15m/yr, but reports are that at least one if not two other teams offered more money and he gave the yanks a hometown "discount" to finish out his career there. Mo is still the best closer in the game (as much as it pains me to say that as a Sox fan), and I don't think you can say Jeter is the best SS in the game.

I will not comment on Jeter but Rivera is surely not getting "icon pay" As of last seasons he is pretty much as good as he ever was and has shown no decline at all. And he only signed a two year deal.

You beat me to it. Mo is actually much more important and much more irreplaceable. Jeter was a key figure in four world series titles in five years and is a first ballot hall of famer. I think he stands a good chance of having a serious rebound season this year. But it is true the Yankees are giving him MUCH MORE than his market value at this point. If he wanted to make the big score he should have signed a shorter contract ten years ago. Then he would have hit free agency in his prime. Nevertheless I don;t think anyone should be "grateful" nor that anyone is greedy. He is trying to get what he can. He has not made a public statement though his agent foolishly has.

Sox sign Adam Dunn, bring back AJ, and send Linebrink to Atlanta....

If they bring back Konerko they could be really good....

Looks like Jeter is a good as signed.. As is Mo.
And I am assuming they are offering Jeter more years, not more money.

The Sawx offered Mo a deal and were going to dump Paplebon?

Yeah, but the rest of the Yankee staff would get blasted by that lineup.

They need to bring back Konerko so Dunn never has to take the field.

I agree with that, Paul @ 1st, Dunn @ DH

Haven't seen that and I would imagine the New York media would be all over it. We will see what happens.

We know his wife prefers Texas, that might be even more important.

The AG trade is a done deal. Phew.

Yanks get Jeter deal done for the years they wanted and all it cost them was a few million more YES bucks, BFD. I guess Derek drank the reality potion after all.

Will the Yanks sign Lee before the end of the winter meetings? The Crawford watch should be interesting, the Werth deal certainly ups the ante on him.

Is there a football game tonight?

Mets GM Sandy Alderson said that he thought they were supposed to be reducing the deficit in Washington.

If Strausburg didn't go down it would almost have made sense to overpay to get the team respectable. Under the circumstances this is nuts. Good B+ player; no superstar

No kidding. I about spit out my coffee when I read about the signing this morning. And they'll be paying him about $18M a year when he's like 38 or 39. Nuts....

The Yankees need to get an answer from Andy Pettitte who still performed at an extremely high level last year. Either way they will go all out to sign Lee. If Pettitte retires they need Lee or the rotation will really be weak. If Pettitte returns they probably have the best rotation in baseball with Lee on board.

I was at the Nationals- Brewers game when Dunn hit the ball out of Miller Park in Right Center field. The HR distance displayed on the scoreboard said 545 feet. Not sure how they estimated that or who might have seen it land. He could hit 45-50 in the Cell with the short right field fence there.
