I get the concept Doug. What I'm saying is he says he can pitch some tonight. If it rains, that's one more day of rest, so he could conceivably pitch more tomorrow...

I frankly don't care what they do. I'm a Phillies fan.

Then you hope they go 7 and burn Sabbathia. That way both Sabbathia AND Lee would be burned. Of course the Phillies have a hurdle to get over but as I say where there is life there is hope. It doesn't look like it's going to be an issue as the game will be played.

Meanwhile I am still wondering what people think Girardi would actually do in the event there were a rain out. Basically the option is to skip Hughes altogether, use Pettitte a day early and then if they win Sabbathia on 3 days rest for a game 7 start or stay with the plan, use Hughes hopefully effectively for game six and then have both Pettitte AND a rested Sabbathia to challenge Lee if necessary. No way would they skip Pettitte in the rotation. But what would a skip of Hughes do to his confidence? It is likely academic as they are going to play the game tonight.

Why not start CC in game 6 if that's the case? What're you gonna save him for? A game that may not happen?

He just pitched on Wednesday. He needs at least 3 days rest. Could not start until Sunday which would be game 7 if game 6 were rained out. My guess is that is what they would do.
He's saying he has 50 pitches in him tonight if they need him. Push game 6 to tomorrow, you could start him, have Hughes come in for a couple, then Woods. Pettitte on Sunday if you get there. Might as well go for it. Do or die at this point.

I hope they play tonight though.

They would never start him on less than three days rest. You do not start a pitcher planning to give him only 50 pitches. A fully rested Hughes or Pettitte is infinitely preferable to a Sabbathia who pitched a full game 2 days before. What Girardi is saying is that in the event Hughes falters early and they cannot go right to Wood, Sabbathia is an option for an inning or so. You would never start a pitcher on such short rest. It's not that they would be saving him. It's that he wouldn't be prepared to pitch more than an inning or at most two.

I agree. If you only have 50 pitches in someone you want them to be 50 important ones; not starting a game where that might mean pulling him in the second.

Rooting for the Giants tonight and for the game & ceremonial burning of both CC and Lee you discussed. Would have ended last night if Kung Fu Panda and Huff did their jobs in the field.

It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone - Bart Giamatti

We Yankee fans don't actually expect to win every year. But we don't expect to be crushed. The Yankees were crushed in this series from top to bottom. The only players who really played up to expectations were Pettitte, Wood, Rivera and Cano. But the bats were not the problem. The pitching was awful. It took the Yankees out of all four games they lost. The Rangers looked terrific and congratulations to them and their long suffering fans. But the Yankees did not really test them. They need to be in a couple of 1-1 games heading into extra innings. The Yanks couldn't even make it a series. To be honest it felt like a sweep. We won one game relatively handily, game 5 and we got blown away in four and were lucky to come back in one. The Yankees have some work to do this off season and I am certain that they will improve the team, not just by signing a free agent like Lee but by getting better role players. I think Andy will be back. I doubt he wants to go out like that. Rivera will be back but one year he is going to not be Mo anymore and then the Yankees will have serious trouble. I for one have never stopped appreciating the uniqueness of the past 15 years. Five World Series victories in 15 years in the modern era is like 9 in 10 years in the old days.
