The Twins will end up regretting that deal someday. That's way too long for way too much.

He is the face of their franchise, and the home town hero. It was actually a hometown discount contract. He could have gotten more in the open market I think
What they will make in box office and jersey sales will make up for a big chunk.
Twins have a great chance to win consistantly in that division.
Unless they move the Red Sox over in reallignment

It is quite a long contract for a catcher, but that doesnt mean he cant move to 1B or DH towards the end of the deal..

I think it's a mistake for any pro team to tie up such a large portion of their payroll in just one player---in the long run it'll kill the teams overall depth.

And how many of these long term mega deals have worked out for the team or their fans?

For every mega deal that worked like Jeters I could name you a dozen that didn't.

This isn't like the Texas Rangers signing A-Rod to $25MM per, and being unable to fill in around him because the Twins always have good young players from their farm system on the cheap to balance the Mauer deal out.

I'm glad to see him stay there...and NOT in Bahstahn.

Personally, I would have preferred to see him leave the American league central. He just kills the Tigers!

Another contract that shocked me was the Matt Holdiday contract with the Cards.

How in the hell is that guy worth all that? I'm sure Pujols loved it though, because they're going to have to give him an awful lot more.

I think that Mauer is worth the money. As said before, He is the face of the francise, and probably on the way to becoming the face of the sport.

It seems to me, that he is what pro athletes should be.

There have been plenty of long-term mega contracts that have proven out to be a mistake...I think Mauer is the exception. Good deal for the player, the team, and the fans in Minn.

(and for Gregallmanfan...touche...I'm glad this keeps him out of NY pinstripes )

One less bidding war between us Gondicar....all the more money we can both throw at Crawford, who's probably thrilled about this too.

From some ESPN Insider blogs my Grandson has read of some of the top writers. The yankees are going after Jason Werth of the Phillies who is a free agent more than Carl Crawford.
After observing Werth perform in the Post Season, I believe he would be a perfect fit.
He looks more like a Red Sox right now with the hair and beard, but I like the thought of him playing in NY now that I'm back here

I'm so sick of the NFL...

It's like we baseball fans wait around all off season for Bo Jacksons "hobby" to end..

Come February it finally does...

Then we have to listen to these NFL fans talk about the draft for months....

I can't stand that sh!t.

Saw the White Sox play San Francisco last week in spring training at the beautiful new park the White Sox and Dodgers share. It's spring training, but the Sox sucked. Gavin Floyd gave up 6 runs in 4 innings and was battered around. The White Sox hitting was pathetic.... hope the season goes better than what I saw......
