Tom Glavine had his number retired this evening and a large painting was commissioned by Steve Penley. Penley is the artist who did the paintings of the ABB in the Big House.

I knew I was glad I bought that Glavine rookie card years ago!
I'm happy for Tom.

He's in select company -- Warren Spahn, Hank Aaron, Eddie Matthews, Dale Murphy, Greg Maddux -- well deserved, he was good

Ha! Good calloak41 -- Phil, one half of the knuckleballing Niekro brothers along w/Joe
gosh those are some stellar names!! Hammerin' Hank deserves 1st mention in any Braves talk...

Go Sox -- only a clean sweep would do, that would get us to within two & make things a lot more realistic -- get well soon Dustin P. & Tek -- you are needed -- Youk's procedure went fine but out for year -- that blows...

What a game! Almost a real spanking. Looks like it may be a 3 team run after all with Boston moving on up.

Stephen said on Aug. 2:
quote:
...the Twins, they cleaned up on the weak sisters, now it's reality check time against TB -- if Morneau & Mauer are healthy down the stretch, they'll repeat as div. champs (Twins still in 2nd, 1-1/2 games (2 in loss column) behind the White Sox w/ 9 to play, 6 in the next 12 days)

Many interesting races, both Fla. and NYMets, and LA and Colorado (don't think either can beat the Padres) will make inroads this week (key divisional series') -- "lots of baseball left to play" as the saying goes

Yes, lotsa ball left to play GO WHITE SOX!!

We can get this game -- two runs is not too much to make up (4-2, 6th) -- this is a huge game for the Sox to win, w/TB having lost

sorry bro but not this year for the ChiSox --

How about Brandon Morrow for Toronto today. He took a no hitter into the 9th. Gave up 1 hit, no runs and struck out 17. You can't do much better than that.
I was impressed. I was just glad Sonny had a better outing than expected. Had visions of yesterday when I heard Joe was putting him in.

Twinkies are now w/in a half-game of Chicago -- always liking those small-market Twins who always do well despite a smaller budget than most -- maybe no more though as they are selling out their new stadium

boy teams like the Cubbies & Tygiz -- imploding into the second division -- kinda too bad for Lou Piniella to end his great career this way

cool series coming up, Cincinnati-St. Louis -- would like to see the Reds do well, they haven't been there in a long time -- not since 20 years ago, when Piniella guided them to the World Series -- Bronson Arroyo pinch-ran yesterday, something very rarely seen nowadays, a pitcher pinch running

gosh, pitcher like Tim Hudson & Carl Pavano -- poster boys for bad-idea free agents years ago, who signed huge contracts, then spent the next few years on the DL -- only to have come around again & are having excellent years

go BoSox -- we need the next two in a big way

Been out of the country for a few months, and missed baseball...bad, as well as this site.
But Stephen, with all due respect...check your facts. Twins are just short of a $100 million dollar payroll...more than a 1/3 more than the LA Dodgers! can't call them a small market team anymore! I know the Mauer contract has a lot to do with it.
If you want to give the twinkies credit...give it to them for putting their $$ back into the team! Thats what the Luxury tax was intended for in the first place.
More teams should follow the Twins.
PS. Good to be back, although I know i was not missed by any. Never did get to chummy with anyone, but have enjoyed my time here.
also...where did the karma system go?

As a jays fan I can't help but wonder what if the jays we're in the central division. Man would they mop up.

Anyone recall why baseball went from 2 divisons in each conference to three? I wish they could balance out the schedule for all teams in the AL.

They did it when they added the wild card. Of course, they could have left it at two divisions and added two second place teams to have a four team playoff but I like it the way they chose to do it.

That one really jumps out, as well as the Pads at 29th. The A's at 28th who aren't half bad either.

Just looked up that info now Otie -- 11th-highest in the majors -- as SpyNet pointed out the Mauer contract may have done that overnight -- the Dodgers are a lot lower than I thought too -- but gosh I have a new favorite now -- the Padres! second-lowest payroll & they're doing awesome -- too bad the Pirates can't do that too
