After 9 whole games, the Royals are third in the AL in batting average and Scott Podsednik leads the AL in batting average at .457.

I know it's early.

They beat the Cards today 5-1 making them 1-8! Things will probably end up about like normal. They'll get hot around mid-season or the second half and pull to within a handful of games, then wind up going home in October wondering why they can't win in April.

Mind blowing stat of the night (ok, not really) -- Cliff Lee after 3 starts with the Phillies: 3-0, 1.13 ERA. Roy Halladay: 3-0, 1.13 ERA.

2 monster pitchers, but National League lineups plus the fact the hitters are not too familar with these guys have a lot to do with those stats.
Impressive none the less!
As good a 1-2 punch as you can have. Matter of fact, more than a few NL teams have a great 1-2 punch these days in their rotations. Geeze, if the Giants ever got any hitting...watch out!

MLB Lifts Ban On Amphetamines In Effort To Speed Up Games

April 13 , 2010
NEW YORK--As part of an aggressive push to try and speed up the pace of Major League Baseball games, commissioner Bud Selig announced today that the league would reverse its ban on amphetamine use. Selig hopes the reversal will give players a jolt of energy that will help them move faster on the field.

“Obviously the ban on amphetamines has had a detrimental effect on the pace of games,” Selig told reporters today. “In the old days, when players wereall tweaked out and jittery, the games were played much faster. Now everything has slowed down. That’s why we’re turning back the clock and letting players take speed in the hopes that they’ll have too much manic, weird energy to fart around in the batter’s box all day.”

Selig said the idea for the new initiative came from the players themselves.

“Since the topic of game pace has come up recently, I’ve had numerous comments from players recommending that I lift the ban on amphetamines,” said Selig. “There seems to be a consensus that eliminating greenies, a decades-old baseball tradition, has contributed to slowing down of the game. It does make sense. I took speed once in college and was bouncing off the walls. It took six ‘ludes to calm me down.”

The reversal of the ban will be put into effect immediately. Jars of greenies are already appearing in clubhouses around baseball as the players rejoice about a return to the good old days.

“This is a return to old-time baseball, the baseball that guys like Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, and Pete Rose played,” said Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis. “Yea! This kicks ASS! It’s the greatest frigging thing to happen to the league in years! It’s going to…to…okay, I have to catch my breath a little. I have to calm down. As you can see I’ve already taken a handful. What time are we playing?”

Umpire Joe West, who inadvertently spurred the change by criticizing the Red Sox and Yankees’ slow pace last week, approves of the new measure. However, he still has some criticism for the league office.

“I think it’s the right decision,” said West. “I just don’t know why they didn’t make it sooner. The second they banned greenies, the pace of play slowed down considerably. It was obviously a problem. It was hurting the game. Yet Selig largely turned his back on the problem and let it fester. I have to believe that allowing this to happen on his watch will tarnish his legacy.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------- -----

I thought this was a joke at first
Reminds me of the movie Bye Bye Birdie when they gave speed to the orchestra leader to speed up his band so Birdie can sing on the Ed Sullivan show.

I don't know why that came to mind first, could it be my obsession with Ann Margaret from those days?!!

It's early but the Giants are hitting .291 as a team, with five of the regulars hitting over .300.

The Rockies Ubaldo Jimenez is no-hitting the Braves through seven, and leading 4-0. Dexter Fowler just made an unbelievable catch in CF to preserve the no-hit bid. Six more to go. Might want to flip over if you get the Braves games.

He's walked six so he's at 120 pitches, and was hitting 99 MPH in the 8th. Funny thing is Jimenez walked the six men out of the windup, then started pitching out of the stretch in the fifth and hasn't allowed a runner since. I don't remember seeing a pitcher do that before.

Three more to go.

Not that anyone really cares, but WTF was St. Lewy thinking....guy leads of the bottom of the 19th with a walk. Pujols up to bat. Guy on first gets caught stealing. Next pitch, Pujols doubles to deep center...would of scored a run easily...

I love those kind of games, too.

2 to 1 in 20 innings. I was watching it online and told the Razor Gal what the score was and she said: "how boring."

I think it's just the opposite...couldn't be more exciting!

I agree. One mistake can cost the game. God knows, the Mets have been making a lot of mistakes so far.

I think that dude trying to steal second in the bottom of the 19th with Pujols up cost St. Lewy...
