Chili, onions and mustard. A NJ hot dog "all the way". It just doesn't get any better than that.

I like them plain, but if I do have something on it Chili would be it.
In my opinion, NYC dirty water dogs can not be beat. The older the water the better.
Be safe,
John

From Gray's Papaya I get 'em plain. In Jersey, it's gotta be all the way. Also, an order of fries with sauce (chili round these parts) and rounds (tater tots) "all the way."

I forgot about Gray's Papaya. Great dogs and for NYC a great price. I always start with four plain and go on from there. Good place to meet other Peach Heads without dealing with the bar scene. Not that I don't like the bar scene but the crowding I can do without.
Be safe,
John

Speaking of chili...it's getting to be that time of the year....nothing like a nice hot bowl of spicy chili to warm the soul on a cold fall evening.

A hot dog has to be Chicago-style - chopped raw onions, sweet relish, a pickle spear, mustard, and sport peppers (and a dash of celery salt if you buy it in Bridgeport). Maxwell St. style, mustard, sport peppers and a ton of well-grilled onions is good too. A chili-cheese dog is cool, but that's a different animal.

And I once made the mistake of wearing button-fly jeans to a superbowl party (when I was still drinking). That was ugly. The following year I bought a pair of velcro-fly jeans from some dude with cheap sunglasses and a long beard.

My favorite "species" of chili dog is the Cincinatti Coney dog. It's hard to duplicate the entire thing even if you have the chili on hand though. It's the whole package that makes it good.

I've never been to Chicago, but would like to do a food tour of it someday, getting in on these various hot dog styles and pizza. Sounds delish.

Dirty water dogs are hot dogs sold by street vendors in NYC. They sit in the hot water all day, so "dirty water" dogs. They taste great with mustard or plain.

People up here put ketchup on dogs, (my son does) but mustard is more popular.

My favorite way to cook them, for the taste is grilled. Now that's a great hot dog...with steamed buns.
