This is exciting! Laid Back is one of my very favorite records of all-time. I was going to wait, I figured this two disc remaster with all the archival stuff would be around $30. Then I clicked on the Amazon link (through my Peach-O-Gram) and to my surprise it was $19.95. My order is in!

you must not buy cd's often anymore. usually 2 cd deluxe sets like this are around $22 max . usually they are closer to $18

WARNING ON LAID BACK PRE-ORDER THOUGH AMAZON:

I did the pre-order and then received an email from Amazon, "Welcome to Amazon Prime." Read the fine print. At least as I see it, the only way to do the pre-order through Amazon at least right now is to sign up for Amazon Prime which also gets you free 2-day shipping. I didn't notice that when I ordered. I canceled the order and also cancelled the Amazon Prime membership. Why? Because I don't want Amazon doing a $12.95 charge on my debit card every month after the free one month trial period. I also do not want to go through the hassle of having to remember to cancel my membership. And at this point, the free one month trial would have only put me through August 13th and the CD release date isn't until August 30th.

I can order the new Laid Back release after it is released on August 30th. Hopefully an Amazon Prime membership is not required by then to order. If it is, I'll simply go to my local brick and mortar music store (I'm lucky enough to have two within two miles of me) and pick it up there.

Was it through Amazon and the two CD remaster, not vinyl or a download? If so, I stand corrected.

That said, you are correct check the fine print. They set it up so you might click on Order With Amazon Prime. Im sure they sell a ton of Prime accounts that way. I loathe Amazon, only buy from them if stuff is absolutely unavailable elsewhere. They are a behemoth economy-sucking vampire from hell.

Before I posted, I double checked and attempted to pre-order and was given two different options, one without signing up for Prime. I can see how it can be confusing, but you can always pre-order from Amazon without signing up for Prime (which is easy to cancel). They will still gladly take your money.

As Gregg ha the release pulled and did not acknowledge it as a release then all the tracks could be called "unreleased". I am hopeful for a mix of versions/mixes we have heard and some we have not. Just far too many of the same tunes for them to be different versions.

Legal issues aside, I was always surprised that Gregg never did some sort of release with the material. He blocked one of his best albums.

Hope I am wrong and it is all different. If not some cleaned up audio of the extras and of course the original album make this a win either way.

A4. Donít Mess Up A Good Thing

B1. These Days

i thought that meant its not on one more try. for instance there are 4 version of these days listed on here and just 1 on one more try. that's 3 unreleased tunes. Melissa is not on one more try as a live version that I recall so that's unreleased. there is just 1 midnight rider on one more try and 2 here. so far that's 5 unreleased tunes on this set just off the top of my head. the face some stuff is shown as already being released means yes they are counting stuff released on one more try as that's where it was previously released.

its listing 9 of these tracks as being released on one more try. my guess is that really means the other 17 tracks really are unreleased and I already showed 5 of them are. bill levenson I think had something to do with this release

read the press release though. they identify some things as being already released and some as not . look at the other post I just made about multiple versions and things not on one more try for sure

I'm starting to think there are more legit unreleased tracks than I initially thought. The "These Days" they previewed is unheard to me.

Reminds me, here's a LAID BACK-inspired animation I did a while back

yeah I think 16 after counting again, maybe they are wrong and its 13-14 but that's still a lot. however a lot of the unreleased stuff is just different mixes. I see 11 that are just different mixes if everything is listed properly. then 1 live track and 3 demos and 1 rehearsal

Unlike the Rolling Stones, Eagles, Pink Floyd etc, The Allman Brothers was a super group just that one year. They couldn't keep it going.

Different view here, I think and have always thought that they took their success for granted and well, just quit putting max effort into their work. Go back and give "Win, Lose or Draw" another spin. Coming off the sales of "Brothers and Sisters" was there ever a better time to hit the studio and double down? That record flat out stunk. Gregg's contribution was minimal and if wasn't for Chuck's keyboard work on "High Falls" I would place that release in the same category with the Arista recordings.

Another thing to add, someone here posted a link to an acoustic outtake of "These days" from the "Laid Back" masters (Thank You). How difficult would it have been for Gregg to have included that in his acoustic performance catalog so that "Melissa" was not beat to death? So many beautiful acoustic guitar songs that could have been a much bigger part of the legacy with a little work.....

I tend to agree with that assessment. Amazon now owns Whole Foods Market. There's one only a mile from me and I shop there but only occasionally. They have a deli and make some good fresh pizza. It's normally $3.50 for a large slice but often it's on "Prime Sale", $5.00 for two slices. Prime Sale? That means you must be a Grand Prime member to get that pizza price. Man, that REALLY irks the sh*t outta me.

I preordered from Bull Moose. It's a little cheaper than Amazon right now.
$18.96 including shipping.

Yeah. it drove me insane. I worked on this with Kirk West for a year or so. It was held up for another year or more. so it was well over 2 years of working, then waiting... finally came out and poof it was gone.

There were complicated reasons for this, including Polygram giving rights to ABB and GA material back to Phil Walden and his new Capricorn, and OMT was the first release. But the reasons this stuff never came back out is Gregg simply didn't like it. He was a perfectionist and did not think outtakes should be released. He had cleaned up a lot between the compilation being put together and finally coming out, so....

I remember him telling us once that he just didn't think stuff like that should get released as it is flawed. He had the same view on people recording shows. If left solely to Gregg, the audience recording would have stopped in the early 70s. And he viewed the archieve shows in the same way.

Some used to get upset when I would write that here. Thought I was making it up. Well Gregg stopped allowing recording at his shows and still some wondered. He was actually pretty open about that. Dickey once told me that there are a lot of things that they could release in the archieves but Gregg always finds something he doesn't like about it.

For any flaws that may be on OMT, there is a magic about many of the songs and performances. For my tastes, it would be my 2nd favourite Gregg album. Gets tougher to pick a number 3 - Battle between the original Gregg live album and Search For Simplicity but that one gets the Jack Pearson vote as his playing is brilliant. And even then I often prefer the studio out takes disc that was traded around here for years.

Shame about all of the legal issues as the release was awesome IMO. I think one of the versions that I have was made in "Italy" maybe? Forget now but something different about it.

Gregg really hated all the recent era stuff from 89 on being recorded and traded. Early on he was often wasted, words slurred and low in the mix somenights on purpose. In the Derek era, he started to have lots of lyric issues and coming in on cue at points. I think he started at nap during the solos especially Derek. It was often after Derek's solos that he would fail to sing. But another topic for a different thread.

To me, even if some versions are the same, it all deserves to be heard and many never got a chance to buy or even heard of OMT.

One More Try was released in mid/late 1997, when there was a lot of upheaval in the Allman Brothers and it was clear there wasn't going to be a new album any time soon. Some of the cuts on One More Try are some of my favorite tracks Gregg has released - solo acoustic "Multi-Colored Lady", "Catfish Blues", "Will the Circle Be Unbroken". It was not what I was expecting from an "Anthology", it was gold.

Searching For Simplicity was released not long after OMT in 1997, with slick 1990s production and some saccharine, forgettable song-writing - a stark contrast of material and production between the two. Just reinforced how great the "warts and all" material on OMT is.

I agree. The rawness of OMT made it special. The exact element that we all like is what Gregg didn't oddly enough.

Searching For Simplicity was obviously a new recording with slicker production for sure. But I never compared to two albums in that way. Even the weaker material, I enjoy more than all his 80s albums.

But the key for me is Jack Pearson who is all over the album and he smokes even on the weaker stuff.
