A big part of the soundtrack of my youth....with Cowboy....with Gregg....and wrote one of my favorite songs of all time with "Southern Kids," performed by the late Alex taylor.

From his son Scott Boyer Jr;

"I come to you today with the somber task of relaying the news that my kind, sweet, and loving Father has left our earthly plain to go and be with the angels. He apparently passed away peacefully sometime last night or this morning and was found in his bed by friends earlier today.
Arrangements will be finalized tomorrow and details on his services will be made available to the public at that time. Dad requested to be cremated and most certainly wanted his remembrance to be as festive and joyous of an occasion as possible, serving to celebrate his life and his legacy, and all will be done that can to honor his wishes.
To all of our friends and family - we love you and hope that you are able to join us in sending him off on a good note. We humbly request a little time and space to heal over the next few days, after which we will see many of you in Muscle Shoals soon with luck.
RIP to a good guy, and I'll seeya on the other side...I love you Dad."

I got to thank Scott for writing "Southern Kids" and I'm glad I did it....his response in 2009 was the following, "Hi Derek, thanks for the compliment on "Southern Kids". Alex was a great guy. Hi to Michael Buffalo Smith. I'm going to Japan in September with Donnie Fritts. The band I'm with, The Decoys, is backing him up. We have a tune-up gig at Douglas Corner in Nashville on the 16'th if you can make it. Peace and love.- Scott Boyer."

I wish I'm would have taken him up on it! sail on, brother!!

I heard him perform at the 2011 JFD. One of the songs he performed was "Please Be With Me". Had a chance to briefly chat too. Rock In Peace Mr. Boyer.

Derek,

I hate to hear this. It's been a rough few years here for family related musicians of ABB. Like you, I've been a lifetime fan of Scott. What a great great writer.

I started listening to his music in the early 70's & have all those early albums. Still listen to that music these days. I used those albums and the acoustic songs as a teacher to learn to play guitar. He & Tommy Talton put out wonderful songs.

Interesting that you mention "Southern Kids". Not a well known song but a wonderfully crafted tune. That was an early tune I learned. Back in the '70's / 80's you could never learn enough Scott Boyer songs.

When I started booking concerts, Cowboy was one of the first acts I booked. They were and are a band from "A Different Time".

Years back I was looking for the first Decoys CD and couldn't find it anywhere. Somehow I got a phone number and called Scott out of the blue. Had a great conversation about music, and he sent me the Decoy's CD as well as some other pretty obscure music he had recorded. What a nice guy.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Scott's family!

Bon voyage Scott Boyer - thank you for one of the greatest gifts of my life, you taught me and many others how to fingerpick with Please Be With Me . All my fingerstyle since was derived from that pattern .
