I really like Hunter Pence. My buddy gets corporate tix at Wrigley and it seems like whenever we go, they are playing Houston. Strikes me as an old-school kind of guy which I admire.

Having said that, I don't see him as a difference maker. I was surprised to hear of the clamor to get him.

Pence is a solid .285/25/85 type guy with pretty good speed. If he can get over his tendency to swing at bad pitches and improve a little bit defensively he could be around to haunt the Astros for the next 10 years.

Makes a fan wonder who Ed Wade is planning on building the team around. Chris Johnson? Brett Wallace? Nobody?

The Oswalt and Berkman deals made more sense in light of the age of those players, but Bourn and Pence are 28 and 27 respectively. Not only that, but the Astros having to pay millions to the Braves and Phillies to assume those contracts. I bet Houston is in an uproar today. The Astros have a long history of bad deals.

When your pitchers can't get anybody out, you DON'T trade away a Gold Glove centerfielder. WTF is he thinking?

So for the first time in is tenure.. well maybe EVER in the Steinbrenner era, the Yanks made NO deadline moves.

I admire his restraint, but I sure hope he knows wott the hell he is doing.

And if I were a Astros fan, I would be furious right now. WTF is Wade thinking?

Interesting Tiggers / Angels game yesterday. Jered Weaver is an idiot. Do not throw at someone's head, especially after you were just warned. Carlos Guillen is an idiot for showing him up like he did. Justin Verlander (my favorite player) made an idiotic statement when he questioned a bunt when he had a no-hitter.

Crazy day at the ballpark.

Yankees are in a tough position. Posado - gone; Jeter - going; ARod - going; Mariano (at some point) has to start going. They have too many uncertainties to make a short term play that can haunt them for years. They have to resign CC - and see if they have anything else real on the mound. If so, they rebuild around Cano, Granderson, Tex. If not, they need to start from scratch in a year or two.

As lifelong Yankee fan you have to realize the Yankees will never have to start from scratch due to there huge revenue stream and ability to sign free agent talent.

Posada is a spare part this year, Mariano is still pitching well and Robertson has the talent to close. Jeter will be the challenge if his skills continue erode but the team has enough talent to carry him.

Cashman has done a great job protecting his to prospects and the Yankee minor leagues has a wealth of talent, especially pitchers and catchers. Some of the young pitching talent is already contributing with Nova and Noesi and I think you will see more homegrown talent come up and help this year.

There are risks this year with the patch work staff but I would not be surprised if they don't pick somebody up after the waiver trading period starts...

Unless they lose Sabbathia to injury we will be in the hunt this year and for years to come...

Horrifying thought though..

With CC have a MONSTER season, and being able to "opt out" ( GULP)

What the heck do the Yanks do if he actually leaves?

For the record, I dont think he will. Not many teams ( if any) could afford him.

Given the season the Indians are having, imagine what they would be like had they held onto CC and Cliff Lee.

The bigger jackass is whoever had the ultimate decision to give him that contract. I laughed my ass off when I heard that.

And A.J. can laugh all the way to the bank.

CC falls to 0-4 against Boston. Jacoby Ellsbury is making a case for MVP.

All tied up again, with a national audience tonight for the rubber game. Gotta love baseball.

It would be hard not to vote for Adrian Gonzales for AL MVP if the vote was held today.

He's cooled a bit since the All Star break, but hard to disagree.

Not to take anything away from Jacoby. I was surprised to see him at 19 HR. Formerly a speed and defense type guy, he is now a build-a-franchise-around-him type. I don't know much about his throwing arm, but he looks like a five-tooler for sure...His game has really evolved.
