Thread: PLEASE READ: Personal Attacks Will Result in a Ban

Rowland - 10/25/2018 at 12:12 PM

Folks,

The "Whipping Post" is set up for folks who want to beat a topic to death, not each other.

Personal attacks are not cool.

You can argue all you want, but name-calling will result in a ban.

You have been warned.

Now have fun and behave yourselves.
Rowland

BrerRabbit - 10/25/2018 at 08:55 PM

Thanks for putting up with our noise - apologies for the headache. Good call, it does get depressing.

I was thinking maybe a ratio limit for posts relevant to a music site versus whipping posts: say 1:10 , for every 10 posts blowing smoke in the WP, one music or if not at least an upbeat post elsewhere as a token gesture of respect for this excellent music site - the WP does dilute the overall music vibe. Then playpen us if all we want to do is be Whipping Posters, like I am doing right now, but am planning on a penance of a music related post.

That would put the hardcore WP brawlers all together in the nice cozy little playpen where we could spew bs and never talk about music, but with no flaming, as you said.

Brer, the Anything Goes part of the General Chat has always been for the musical side of things, while the Whippin' Post has traditionally been for the place political discussions, current events and anything else people want to offer up. The site provides a good service, news and blues, things you can actually use in your daily lives. There's something here for everybody.

Some people do get a little too upset when others do not agree with them, but I think we can all agree personal attacks serve no purpose.

BrerRabbit - 10/25/2018 at 11:04 PM

i see your point. I was simply suggesting that those of us who post frequently in the Whipping Post consider participating a bit more in the primary purpose of a music website. To help avoid the Whipping Post becoming the dominant forum.

Hey Rowland

Personally, I'd like to thank you for bumping Sang off the top of the board.

BoytonBrother - 10/26/2018 at 05:04 PM

Personally, I don’t think name calling is the root of the problem here. It’s those who come here for the sole purpose of using inflammatory rhetoric to fight, rather than engage in discussion. That’s what should be banned.

Rowland - 10/26/2018 at 07:23 PM

BoyntonBrother - it's certainly subjective and "inflammatory rhetoric" is even more subjective than "personal attacks and name calling," especially in the Whipping Post where people seem to enjoy posting topics that are very polarizing.

The following comments are made in general, and not directed to BoyntonBrother.

I see baiting and inflammatory rhetoric happening on both sides of many of the discussions here.

The fact that you think an opinion is wrong doesn't give you the right to attack the person making that point.

All that said, posting here is a privilege, not a right, and if you go after people and call them names, you lose that right.

And... I know a lot of you personally, and y'all are a lot nicer in person than you can be here when you get your hackles up ! I'd like to see more of the behavior of the cool people I know and less of the folks with steam coming out of their ears.

Rowland

BoytonBrother - 10/26/2018 at 09:01 PM

In all seriousness, I'm simply saying that I don't think this rule will stop any personal attacks, if that is the goal. Just today I've seen the phrase "only an IDIOT would think that", because technically, the writer didn't namecall a member of the site. Just my humble opinion, as a fan of the site.

The_Newt - 10/29/2018 at 06:02 PM

Thanks for posting this. I've read way too many personal attacks on here through the decades, and you also had crazy people who I believe have since been banned or no longer visit here, who would Doxxx people who they did not like and publically post their home address, and place of work, etc.

Looks like we can't rely on the libs or mainstream media to set an example.

Isn't this a notice from Rowland about OUR behavior toward each other? Are irrelevant news links mistakes or to stir the pot? That's a rhetorical question.

What a sad way to put a stamp on your first week of the freshman year as a Trump-hating leftist. I dont see much progress unless democrats stop whinning about 2016.

Trolling. It's disruptive to post an irrelevant political link in response to an administrative request by Rowland & disrespectful to Rowland who makes this forum possible.

Do these quotes from Boynton Brother qualify as personal attacks?

Although it has been a lot more civil on WP of late, I kinda miss the Wild West brawling, call me morbid but I found it entertaining.

Do you not understand how this works??????

Quit the personal attacks or you will be gone.

Haven't you noticed some nasty posters are MIA? Never to return? Rowland isn't kidding. If you have any interest in continuing to have the privilege to post, stick to the point & not the playground.

Who's MIA?

So is this the snitch thread now?

BoytonBrother - 2/20/2019 at 06:49 PM

I truly hope I never get banned, because I love coming to this site, and I think Rowland does a fantastic job running it, and being the ring leader of the Whipping Post section.

But it seems like it's ok to make personal attacks against public figures, even if they are good people who have done nothing wrong. It seems like it's ok to attack the women of the #metoo movement (gender), age (millenials), and political affiliation......all of which are protected from discrimination in our Constitution. But if I respond by attacking the behavior of that person committing the discrimination, then it results in a ban? I sure hope not.

If someone wants to come here to be provocative and insult, then they should expect to get it right back. This notion that someone can attack a public figure, and then be protected from someone responding in kind, is simply illogical, and not something I can do.

I hope Rowland amends the policy, so that it requires him to examine all of the context surrounding the comments. If there is a nasty personal attack out of the blue, then yes, ban them. But if the "personal attack" is in response to something provocative, then I hope Rowland would decide that there is no violation, since the poster was looking for a rise out of people.

Just my 2 cents. I wanted to make that statement so that if I do get banned, yall will know exactly why. Hope to see you all in the forum!
