Thread: The Trump Effect

This is America, speak English! They are probably illegal! I pay for their welfare! I'm calling ICE on you!

The difference between this racist ahole and a typical conservative, not much! This guy maybe has bigger stones. Or maybe he was just tired of being politically correct.

What surprises me is this was in NYC, where you hear thousands of U.S. citizens speaking different languages all day every day - Spanish in Bushwick, pidgin in Flatbush, Chinese in Flushing, Korean in Sunset Park, Arabic in Bay Ridge, German in Glendale, Polish in Greenpoint, Russian in Brighton Beach, French in Cobble Hill, Italian in Carrol Gardens, Hindi in Jackson Heights, Yiddish in old Williamsburg, etc. Is he really going to make calls on all of these people? The man was identified as a lawyer with offices near by the incident, and his firm's reviews have since taken a dive. Hopefully this guy doesn't vacation in Miami, he'll lose his mind.

And there have always been people demanding immigrants speak English, that's not unique to Trump - the empowered ICE threats towards people who are legally here are what is abhorrent. Years ago, I was at a diner in Brooklyn and a guy with a "Welcome to America, now speak ENGLISH" shirt walks in to pick up his take out while orders in Greek and Spanish can be heard from the kitchen. He's lucky his food was boxed and ready when he got there.

If he’s triggered that easily, he’s going to have a hard time finding peace in his life. Spanish ain’t going anywhere ever.

Bhawk - 5/17/2018 at 02:22 PM

I've never understood why there hasn't been a conservative movement to make English the Official Language.

+1

I remember having a conversation with my m-i-l about this. She was complaining about advertising using Spanish. I told her it's free enterprise and companies have the right to market to customers. I said there are plenty of places to shop too.

I don't like bilingual government related documents (DMV, voting etc.) but it's the world we live in now especially out west. You know what, we'll live.

It's never really bothered me, it's no different than products sold in different countries that have multiple languages on the directions - just flip to the applicable version. But considering there are more countries with more than one language commonly spoken (Belgium, Canada, India, Ireland, South Africa, Spain, Israel, Switzerland, most of eastern Europe, most of southeast Asia and the Middle East, just to name a few), people in the United States should either get over it or educate themselves.

If only the man in the video had shown this kind of restraint. Bravo!

My faith in society has been restored.

Most of them seem to think it already is, just like most of them seem to think the US is a Christian nation.

This is an excellent point.

I noticed this as well, what a incredibly diverse place for a racist bigot to attempt to live peacefully.

Yeah the rhetoric used here has been updated for the era of Trump. Honestly I can't say I was familiar with the term ICE before the last election. Back in the day folks would just say "ima call immigration on you".

In the era of Trump this sort of behavior is basically encouraged.

One of the tools that was running for this year's Republican nomination for Senate in Indiana, Congressman Todd Rokita, had TV ads that threw in a line about the official language. The ads mostly said that he would lick Trump's boots or anything else Trump might want licked. Luckily, he lost the primary.

So many immigrants only speak their native language and therefore have difficulty advancing in the workforce.

In the schools the Spanish taught is Castilian or the dialect of Spanish as spoken in Spain. Knowing how to communicate in Castilian won’t do you well at the Taco truck.

Often if you need to speak to someone that does not speak English talking to their children helps.

The English as the national language spiel is a political tool and useless.

If everyone was able to speak English, they would do much better professionally.

I don't know man. Trump struggles with English, and he got elected president.

President Trump speaks like many from NYC.
Direct and without apology.

Trump speaks like an uneducated idiot (Rex Tillerson's word, not mine). How about how Bill Gates had to explain what HIV and HPV were to Trump at a White House health summit? Trump can't even do homework before an event in order to not embarrass himself in front of someone who is actually smart and actually a successful businessman.

Spanish speaking people worldwide can understand each other just fine. What you are referring to is about the equivalent of American English vs Brit English, some words different, but overall it's the same.

You would have no problem at the Taco Truck with Castillan spanish.

I speak can read, write and understand multiple dialects of Spanish from Castellano, castellano rioplatense, Mexicano from ciudad de mexico distrito federal which is very clear, español puertorriqueño, as well as English, standard Italian and napulitano, Portuguese, and some French (I use a Parisian accent that's clear and well understood, I do not speak that horrible backwards dialect known as Quebecois), and Hochdeutsch or Standarddeutsch. When I have bought food at Mexican or Central American restaurants the native Spanish speakers working there understand me perfectly when I speak Spanish.

When Trump is talking off script or teleprompter, he is at his worst which = his normal. He does not sound like someone prepared in subject matter. On the recent Iranian Deal Break, one of the top intel analysts stated that Trump can probably speak to less than 5 lines of what's in the deal.

Where Trump excels is in giving campaign rallies. Here he is at home where he usually speaks to an audience that knows even less than he does and who is more interested in anger and bombastic rhetoric.

Wow! Your wife must love you, you're a cunning linguist.

Seriously though, Mule's point was that Spanish is worthless other than to place an order at the Taco Truck, since Taco Trucks are all that Mexicans are capable of, or ought to aspire to in the USA. And decent Americans will never interface with Mexican culture other than at the Taco Truck. Never mind that I have never had any trouble ordering Mexican food in English, even at the Taco Truck.

Personally I envy your Spanish, I have always regretted not being able to read Cervantes' Don Quixote in the original. The finest novel ever written.

This is common knowledge among immigrants. English as a second language classes are in high demand.
