Thread: Eric Burdon @The City Winery, NY 5/11/18

Mr Burdon played a birthday show at the City Winery in NYC on Tuesday Night. Great show, I'd like to tell you how he brought a fire to the stage, but that would be a tribute reserved for Patti Smith on this night. Late in the show she delivered a cake with lit candles up on stage as she led the crowd singing Happy Birthday To Eric, and as she raised the cake up her hair caught fire. Eric smoothly reached out and put her out. Classic moment. Fun show loaded with timeless tunes. Eric is a character and a legend. The Animals were a part of the British Invasion that found love in the American Blues, played tribute to them, and then enhanced off shoots of it. It was a treat to share the room with Eric and take in his renditions and recitals.

Sounds fantastic. Did Smith sing too? I missed a great opportunity to catch Eric with the current Animals lineup in Victoria B.C. several years back, couldn't make the ferry from Port Angeles WA. Knew it was gold slipping away.

Love the Animals, and Eric's work, great voice and style.

Years ago. I had a later Eric album where he redid Animals stuff & I would like to get that again, it may be live (?). Good album. Of course some Animals is historic and great. But, I'm sorry, Eric is woefully terrible in these videos. Talk / sing and not hitting the note.

She came out with the hots for Eric singing Happy Birthday leading the crowd in to join her and then she came out for the last half of the encore. "It's My Life/Hold On I'm Coming" (technically only Hold On. The songs ran together for the video). Her Happy Birthday smoker was immediately before the encore. Her happiness was priceless.

I inputed the 5/11/18 shows setlist to a website I use for song identification purposes when I upload videos. I love this site. I plugged the song by song info in and it links you to earlier versions of the same song from the 40 plus years ago. It links you into some Gorgeous video of Eric with War and the Animals in decades past. I was blown away with the video links to Hold On, Inside Looking Out (always thought of it as Grand Funk's tune).

Music is best served with an attitude (a confidence, a swagger, a carefree delivery, ) and it's presence is evident in Eric's work.

This was his 77th Birthday Bash. We dug it. Here's his Official Site & Tour Page, Live Full, Love Deep....

I'm glad someone else had the courage to say it here. I didn't want to say it but I agree, Eric does not sound the greatest at this point. I got through a few minutes each of only two of the videos here. I'm disappointed too because I love that old Animals stuff and he did more good stuff with War.

He played the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk last summer, I wanted to go but couldn't. But that's the only conditions I would see him under now...... those Boardwalk shows are free. I've seen him 4 or 5 times over the years and I always thought he sounded a lot better than he does in these. But hell, he's 77 years old now. Back in the day he was really on fire live...........saw him in 1982 in L.A., he tore the damn house down...........

Still, the pull for the baby boomers is strong. He has a show this summer at The Mountain Winery here in the Bay and I was curious so I looked. The highest priced seats, $79.50, are all sold out.

Kudos to you Eric for still being out there though............not many 60's veterans are out onstage anymore.............

I fell less connected to negativism than joy. I look for beauty in all things. Some folks like to look past the rose petals to see the thorny stem. I pity that existence as it's a one of empty needless suffering. Life is temporary, it's a series of buckets. I think of everyday as one bucket that can be filled with memories and activity or lie empty in dormant discontent. I tell my kids to enjoy life and that the days you live now ARE the good ol' days that you'll look back on. Even the challenging ones as they will define you. Look for good in things and people. Enjoy every road you travel. Just sayin'

As far as the show... This 77 year old Gent was phenomenal. We all age. I only put up a few videos, but they're all there. In the lead-in to this one he quips two words about the aging process..... "It Sucks", I hear the nailed notes and the "aged" ones, but I also see the man and his mannerisms like the card dealing motions of his father the gambling man, Just a small petal on the flower in the bucket of the night.

Gotta say that was much better. Really dug his voice on this one.
