You know it is getting slow here when this barely causes a ripple.

What the hell is As The Crowe Flies???

They have it billed right under the headliners. Could it be a mysterious super jam with Chris Robinson and some others? I have no clue

ABB-NYG - 11/13/2017 at 05:40 PM

No Warren this year sucks...Derek to be expected

Don't think so.

I'm always excited for Wanee. Karl Denson, Jaimoe, Markus King, Walter Trout, Les Bros - all pretty solid. Last year's Wanee was pretty chill with the heavy Dead presence. I'm not a big Panic fan, but I'm glad to see 2 nights of them instead of Bob Weir (who closed the Peach stage by putting everyone to sleep). I am a little surprised to not see Warren on the bill, but not surprised TTB keeps skipping Wanee since they play 420 Fest around then and their own Florida festival in January.

It's never going to be 2010 again, but Wanee is always a pretty awesome time.

Jaimoe, Marc Q, and Jack P with Vaylor Trucks, Duane Trucks, Berry D Oakley and Lamar Jr + Bruce Katz. Warren and Devon absence is surprising, but I wouldn't be surprised with Warren, Devon and Duane Trucks get added later.

Well obviously Duane is already going to be there.

Solid lineup --- trading out Bobby for Phil is an upgrade. Chris Robinson is the greatest value add of the whole festival.

Otherwise, nothing that's going to get me to travel halfway cross country to see, unfortunately.

Yep...typo. Meant Duane Betts (+ Devon and hopefully Warren)

As The Crow Flies as to be a Black Crowes type thing. My first thought is that it may be a Black Crowes reunion sans-Chris. Or maybe Chris playing Black Crowes music is more likely. It sure as heck ain't the metal duo from Montana!

There is no way that band is 3rd billing at this festival. Gotta be something else

I'm betting The Crow Flies is the original Black Crowes line-up less Chris Robinson.....Only because of comments Rich Robinson made earlier this year regarding talk of something with his former band mates from way back possibly being in the works for the future. Seems like Wanee would be a great festival for such a project to perform.

There's a thread somewhere in here in which these comments were posted.....Just a hunch this is what he was referring to...

Um, please see the Magpie Salute thread below....Rich has been touring with former Black Crowes members as a new band called the Magpie Salute for about 10 months now....they have played at least 80 shows in the US and all over the world, including Peach Fest. they released one album already and are going into the studio in February to record a double album of all new material. No way did Rich just spend a year rebooting and building a new brand/band only to start another one....not to mention I don't think he'd share a bill with Chris anytime soon. Read and listen to recent interviews....both of them have no desire whatsoever to play together again.

Yes that is definitely not it.

I really doubt the Robinson's would both be on the bill for Wanee, and Chris would stomach Rich's project being billed over him. Especially since Rich has the Magpie Salute.

Soup - 11/13/2017 at 10:49 PM

seeing the other bands on the bill, i can see it being some kind of all star jam maybe with Chris as the singer, Luther and Marcus King on guitar, Schools on bass and maybe Duane on drums.....something like that maybe? Just a one off special performance where they play some Crowes tunes and covers? could happen I guess...wonder how long they are gonna build suspense on this.

Soup - 11/14/2017 at 12:28 AM

S**t just got real at the cutting room q&a with Marc Ford and Rich Robinson someone asked about As The Crowe Flies...

Rich was classy as ever and basically said Chris has the right to do whatever he wanted to do, eventhough it is a little hypocritical after the way he "ran his mouth about us being a cover band".

He said if Chris wants to play Black Crowes music with the B squad, he wishes him well....then he paused and said, "but I've got Marc Ford"......the crowd went nuts. Great moment.

Looks like one of those leftover wanna be jam bands from the 90's with a quirky name. Blah!

WarEagleRK - 11/14/2017 at 02:46 PM

Saw Pigeons Playing Ping Pong at a festival here in Chattanooga and they were fun.

They sound like they will be this year's Turquaz or Dangermuffin - the unknown jammy band everyone will be talking about the rest of the weekend.

ABBDutchFan - 11/14/2017 at 06:26 PM

As The Crow Flies apparently is a Black Crowes project by Chris Robinson.
Rumours are a plenty regarding who else will be involved. Adam MacDougall makes sense.
Also Luther Dickinson (already on the Wanee bill with NMAS). Also Audley Freed's name pops up.

I'm a big BC fan and want to stay away from all the discussions regarding the ongoing Chris vs Rich/Steve feud.
I want to enjoy both brothers musical endavours. But if this is true it's a very odd development. Chris has every right to revisit the Black Crowes catalogue but he also publically critisized Rich and his Magpie Salute project.

See: http://forums.stevehoffman.tv/threads/chris-robinsons-new-black-crowes-proj ect.713444/

Rich Robinson adresses this in this lengthy interview around the 47 minute:

(Thanks to Alan Paul)

This whole development is fascinating. I don't want to take sides either as I enjoy what Chris has going on in CRB and as a die hard fan of the Black Crowes I think The Magpie Salute is the only band that can lay claim to the keepers of the BC catalog. At this point, John Hogg sings the material better than Chris currently can. Chris' voice was shot on the last few tours. the music he writes for CRB is much better suited for his current singing style.

I can't believe this is going to be anymore than a "one off". Otherwise he is going to look like a huge hypocrite.

a_shell - 11/15/2017 at 01:55 PM

kind of interesting that CR would do a crowes deal. in addition to his previous comments (as others have posted) he said this in a interview published last week:

quote:
The audiences at the CRB shows aren't really expecting any Black Crowes songs, are they?

Nobody's been asking for them. I don't even see any Black Crowes T-shirts in the crowd. But that isn't to say I'm not proud of the music we made as the Crowes. Those are some very good songs, and the time will come when I want to sing them again. But for now, I just want to follow the path I'm on.

That being said if it was a line-up similar to what ABBDutch said, i would enjoy checking it out.

Rich uses the term "glaring hypocrisy" during that segment, and I think that just about sums it up perfectly. Chris has gone out of his way on more than one occasion to needlessly trash Magpie. I've always loved the Crowes, but Chris' douchebaggery truly knows no bounds.

Soup - 11/17/2017 at 03:28 PM

I caught the show on Wednesday at Irving Plaza. I saw them 3 times this year, once in January when they started, once in August at the Peach Fest, and then Wednesday night.

Seeing and hearing them grow as a band has been one of the highlights of 2017 for me. They are a band now, now longer a "project". Been seeing the Black Crowes for 25 years and I have never seen Rich smile so much on stage. And seeing Marc happy and healthy playing this music is so great.

I try not to get caught up in the drama, but if Chris and Rich are the parents, and the black crowes catalog songs are the children, and this is a custody battle, Rich and the Magpie Salute deserve full custody with no visitation rights. Chris has bashed the Black Crowes and the Magpie Salute at any opportunity he has been given over the last 2 years. For the record, I like CRB alot, but let Rich carry the legacy of the Crowes forward from here.

I cannot wait to hear what the Magpie Salute comes up with in the studio this winter. This band's potential is limitless.

Put me down for this. All of it.

slothrop8 - 11/18/2017 at 04:40 AM

I really enjoy The Magpie Salute, but I like Luther era live Crowes best - as much as I love Marc Ford, I like Luther better and he's only been improving it seems. Chris Robinson, with Luther, MacDougald, and maybe Audley Freed playing Crowes tunes even as a one-off sounds like fun to me.
