Thread: Southern Blood arrival.

peach-head - 9/7/2017 at 06:43 PM

My copy of Greggs posthumous album arrived today. I am numb, numb at how great it sounds. Every song is a classic. Brilliant, Thanks Gregg.

pops42 - 9/7/2017 at 06:47 PM

Hopefully Ill get mine soon.

steved - 9/7/2017 at 06:57 PM

Looking forward to getting mine as well. The GA store still shows my order as processing. Hopefully it won't be long.

I have held off ordering the disc and have only listed to snippets as I am attending the Grammy Musuem show tonight and want to experience the tribute to Greg without having much advance info. Really looking forward to it, only about 6 hours from now.

I'm getting a little concerned that mine will not be here tomorrow from Amazon. I pre-ordered it and it shows that it will arrive tomorrow, however it has yet to ship and it doesn't even show "shipping soon" on the order page like it normally does.

Lee - 9/7/2017 at 09:31 PM

Amazon told me it will arrive on the 12th. BUT, in my experience when I pre-order something it usually shows up before the email tells me. I ordered two other things that are supposed to show up tomorrow because of the next day shipping but now it says they won't be here until Saturday. Not a big deal to me.

WarEagleRK - 9/8/2017 at 03:29 AM

It looks like there might be a delay in shipping the pre-ordered CD/DVD deluxe version from Amazon. I'll probably just cancel my order and run to the store tomorrow and see if I can find it.

WarEagle, Mine was delivereda day early by Amazon.

steved - 9/8/2017 at 04:30 PM

I just called Music Today via the Gregg Allman store to check on my order for the Deluxe CD/DVD Southern Blood.

I ordered back on July 28th. Being told it is backordered!

Good things come to those who wait. I just hope the wait is not too long.

What's on the DVD? I am assuming the two live performances plus some album background. Are these two performances also on the CD?

allmansrvvegas - 9/8/2017 at 05:55 PM

I got a email confirmation yesterday. I won't receive my copy until Thursday.

Did you order the CD/DVD deluxe version? That one seems to be delayed for everyone.

I cancelled my order and just picked it up at Best Buy today.

It's a 30 minute documentary with interviews with Don Was and Scott Sharrard. No, those two performances are not on the CD.

hdtracks has a high resolution version of the deluxe version available for download. It includes a pdf of the booklet and sounds fantastic!

Hi WarEagle, yes I did order the deluxe edition.

steved - 9/9/2017 at 10:32 PM

After posting yesterday about being told on the phone that Southern Blood was back ordered by Music Today I received an email saying my order has shipped. I should be getting it Tuesday. I cannot wait. Have the headphones all ready. Kleenex too.

Reminds of driving to the record store asking if Laid Back was in yet. Many trips later the store gave me the promo poster for Laid Back. Sure wish I still had it!

This record is an absolute gem IMO from beginning to end!!! If this album doesn't win a Grammy award something is amazingly wrong.

Thank you Gregg Allman for this final gift.

Marley - 9/9/2017 at 11:51 PM

I'm sorry people are having shipping delays. This is one reason I buy new stuff on iTunes and only get classic or random-find stuff on vinyl. If I can't wait to hear something, I don't want to wait!

I blogged about the album here: http://marleyjay.com/blog/southern-blood/

I sort of thought I would've gotten most of the emotion of listening to it out of my system after I listened to the NPR stream. Nope! I'm still sad that he's gone and awed and grateful he was able to make a last music statement like this, and that even though he often struggled onstage after the liver transplant, he sounds so **** ing good here. This is some of the best singing he ever did. He's better than I would have bothered to hope for. He doesn't roar the way he often did, but his voice is strong and he sings with so much taste and feeling. Willin', I think, is better than the original - I love the little rising action they added to underscore "I've driven every kind of rig that's ever been made." Blind Bats is wonderfully eerie and similar to the ABB's great takes on Gilded Splinters. Going, Going, Gone is a gut punch. I Love the Life I Live sounds like some of the most fun he ever had behind a mic. And Song for Adam is almost indescribable. It's an incredibly meaningful choice, a great performance, and to use it to end the album that way is incredible.
If I had to pick anything bad to say, I'll say it's maybe a little too sweetened in places. There are spots they could have dialed back the harmony vocals (who wants to hear anyone except Gregg in this situation?) and the pedal steel, although for the most part it's good and helps establish a cool linkage with Laid Back. And I still wish they had just ended Song for Adam with silence after those lines Gregg wasn't able to sing. But oh my goodness. After all the times we hoped for more music from Gregg, I'm so glad we have this.

mikesolo - 9/10/2017 at 02:32 AM

I can't really listen to this yet. I will, but its still so soon after he moved on that it gets me thinking about so many things besides the music that it's not a proper listen.
