Thread: 7/9/70 ABB Stony Brook

anthonyspare - 1/25/2017 at 02:06 AM

Just listened to it for the first time, trying to upload now.
So....
First there is this http://www.hotrails.co.uk/blueskybag/features/stonybrookforever.htm

Cliff notes for the lazy: Moyssi was a lighting director for Stony Brook during this time. He was friends with George Geranios and Seth Dworken who ran sound.

Moyssi goes to say near the bottom of the page...

quote:

"My favorite fact is that we paid the Allman Brothers all of $300 for their first gig in our gym. It was a Thursday night with just ABB in 1970, followed by them opening for two shows with Mountain on Friday or Saturday. ABB did Stormy Monday, which Mountain also did as the headliner. After the early show, Leslie West wisely asked if he could open for ABB on the late show. What a friggin' wonderful show that turned out to be. They introduced Mountain Jam that night. (But I've done about 2,000 shows and mix up dates and bills and everybody's name, so take it for what it's worth.)

Many, most, maybe all of those shows were recorded with permission on an Ampex 300 or 301 from the sound mixer. Seth Dworkin was the mixer--a brainiac who went on to win a Grammy with the Grateful Dead and direct satellite operations for Wall Street Journal--kept all the original recordings (made on Scotch professional 1/4" tape supplied by me). He died of Crohn's disease summer a year ago, just after we got reacquainted and he verified that he still had all the tapes.

The Problem is that I can't figure out how to get in touch with the family and those tapes would need careful attention. I had a primary dub of the 1970 ABB/Mountain gig and ABB's archivist, Kirk West, told me it was the best FOH mixer recording he'd ever heard of the band. That was after they released the famous 1971 performance at Stony Brook that was recorded just weeks before the tragic motorcycle fatalities."

So, long story short, I "ran into" George via the ABB Stony Brook YouTube comment section a few months ago. Today I got the CD in the mail. It is Seth Dworken's recording of the 7/9/70 Stony Brook Summer Orientation Pre-Concert. Did anyone know this existed? Special thanks to George for this.

Always cool to hear about the great shows they had at Stony Brook - I saw many! Hope to get to hear this one too!

tori - 1/25/2017 at 03:27 AM

Would be a very early Midnight Rider. Cant wait to hear this show

BrerRabbit - 1/25/2017 at 03:41 AM

Wow! What a find!; Amazing, man would like to hear the Mountain recording too.

The_Newt - 1/25/2017 at 08:31 AM

Thank you for posting about this Allman brothers band concert. I also can't wait to hear it.

When you upload this please post the link here.

Dan - 1/25/2017 at 08:55 AM

Ditto would love to add this to my collection

islalala - 1/25/2017 at 02:46 PM

My hunch is that the best way to get in touch with the family is via the WSJ. I'm sure they kept emergency contact info for him as an employee and dependent info via any health or benefits policies.

They won't give that info up to a cold-caller, but I'd start with Alan Paul who has written for the WSJ and may be able to connect you with the right people.

Good luck!

Thanks for some good news on such a sad day

dzobo - 1/26/2017 at 09:26 AM

Anthonyspare.

Attended the early ABB/Mountain show on 7-10-70. Since the setlist you have is different from the one that circulates I have to assume that it is probably the late show. I'm pretty confident from memory that the posted early show setlist is accurate. Certain that the band opened with Don't Keep Me Wonderin', performed You Don't Love, and closed with a 34 minute Mountain Jam. BTW, don't confuse these shows with the incorrectly listed 7-26-70 show in the live database (which actually has the correct 7-10-70 early show setlist). As discussed previously in these forums that show did not occur. In fact it was verified that Mountain performed at an entirely different venue on that date.

But I am so glad to hear from some one who was intimately involved with the Stony Brook concerts. Perhaps the biggest reason is that I had a discussion with Kirk West regarding another ABB date at Stony Brook, 10-23-70. The band opened for Delaney and Bonnie. Unfortunately I did not attend but I do remember the show taking place. But the news from Kirk was that tapes from this show definitely existed. The issue was that the tape holder was demanding a king's ransom for their release to the ABB organization. So if you do have further contact with George please mention this info to him. Maybe there is more than one copy of this show and it won't take an exorbinant fee to make it available.

A couple of corrections to Myossi's anecdotes. The ABB was not the only act on their first appearance at Stony Brook on 4-28-70. They were the scheduled opener for Chicago who due to a travel issue wound up playing first. A roommate of mine was at the complete show. Also, no way any Stony Brook show was the introductory performance for Mountain Jam, although there is the possibility that Mountain Jam was performed twice on 7-10-70. As Myossi himself admits things tend to get a bit mixed up after doing so many shows.

If you need any more Stony Brook info let me know. I attended from '69 to '73 so missed the earlier Doors, Joplin, Hendrix performances. Also the free 1970 outdoor performance was the Airplane, not the Starship. I made that one (after seeing Joe Cocker with Mad Dogs and Englishmen a couple of days prior). What a great time for seeing so many great acts in an intimate setting for very reasonable prices.

BTW, noticed after first posting that you had a 7-9-70 date for the show. The show I went to was definitely on a Friday which would have to be 7-10-70.

harvey - 1/26/2017 at 09:59 AM

Hey Don - according to Skip, he had contacted a fellow who was on the Stony Brook sound and lighting crew who actually helped put the currently traded 7/10/70 tape together, and he had said that for everyone's info & records, the circulating material is in fact a compilation of the early and late shows from 7/10/70 and not one show. So maybe what Anthony has listed here may be the complete early or late show recording ... unless they did a warm up solo gig on 7/9?

spoonbelly - 1/26/2017 at 01:12 PM

Hello dzobo,
Just to let you know I went to SUNY New Paltz from '70-'73. Went to Orange Co. Comm. College before that. Don't know who played at NP before that time but the list from the early '70s was ABB, Mountain, Ten Years After, Chambers Bros., Jethro Tull, The Youngbloods, The Byrds, Orleans, Jefferson Airplane, Van Morrison, Seals and Crofts, New Riders, Kinks, Beach Boys, etc., etc. Wow, we're gettin' old!!!! Can't wait to hear this show whether it's 7/9 or 7/10. Wow, another new Duane soundboard!!!!!!!!

anthonyspare - 1/26/2017 at 01:22 PM

A warm-up solo gig is definitely what took place on 7/9/70. Spoke with George again on Tuesday and specifically asked him about the date. He says it for sure happened on the 9th, he was in attendance along with Seth Dworken. He message said ,"Maybe 50 people in the GYM, billed as a "Orientation Pre-Concert." The 10th was the "regular concert" where the Brothers opened for Mountain. That is why the show on the 10th is shorter, it is an opening act set. On the 9th they stretched out because they could. No other act played."

Sorry to keep you guys waiting for this but it has been a crazy week at work, I promise to post the show tonight, I am starting a new job on Monday and the wife always has some "project" for me to work on.
I will say that I truly believe it is the 9th show, because I have never heard any of these versions specifically the 'Liz Reed. I listened to it twice last night and no part of the set sounded familiar in any way. It is a VERY early Midnight Rider. It's coming soon. I promise.

Yes, I do recall now that this was brought up before. Tough to put my memories up against some one who worked the show and then the tape production, although I believe Skip's contact was Myossi who has admitted that "but I've done about 2,000 shows and mix up dates and bills and everybody's name, so take it for what it's worth." Would be cool if the complete shows would see the light of day (or at least the setlists), BTW, the circulating show clocks in at around 77 minutes so there is a possibility that this could be a complete opening set. As the band were apparently closers for the late show I am sure the set would have been longer.

This all makes sense. Concert was not open to the public. Also Myossi mentions a Thursday night which the 9th was. But he does factually error when he says it was the band's first performance at the SB gym. Again that had occurred 4-28-70, a Tuesday.

Spoonbelly, being at the hipper state schools we were completely spoiled but hey, those acts had to play somewhere.

To help us in our time of grieving, here ya'll go.

At the end of the show you can hear Duane say, "we will see you tomorrow night", so the mysterious 7/9/70 show did indeed happen. Enjoy.

Special thanks to George Geranios for bringing this to surface after 47 years, and also the late Seth Dworken who captured the recording.

I'm trying to email you the files with wetransfer(.com). I hope it works. These recordings are simply awesome.
They could have been a ABB archive release. They are that good! A great find in this dark, dark week.

Once converted to lossy formats like mp3, there is no merit to converting to wav, since what's lost is lost for good.

[Edited on 1/27/2017 by anthonyspare]

First of all Anthony, thanks so much for making this available. Converting to .WAV isn't necessarily a "bad idea", it just won't improve anything. Whatever may have been lost in the compression to MP3 (which may or may not be audible - don't want to open that can of worms) won't be restored by converting the files to .WAVs. The "bad idea" part of that would be that most folks seeing a .WAV will assume that it's an uncompressed version of the source, not one that has been created from an MP3.

Ideally if you could GET an uncompressed version, that would be outstanding. There are even lossless methods available (FLAC, SHN, etc.) to compress a .WAV that would be able to uncompressed back out to the full size with no loss of data. If you CAN'T get that then we're better off leaving things as they are.

Either way, thanks again for sharing.

Incredible!

I hope you realize the ABB audiophile Nazgul are now riding for the original lossless source of this. Word needs to get back to whoever has this - PLEASE DO NOT VANISH AND LEAVE ONLY THE MP3 OF THIS BEHIND . This is gold. Sell it if you must, but this is an urgent call to release the lossless, before we all disappear.

Please please please do not hide this light under a bushel!

Thank you for sharing here. And thank you for your efforts in getting it in the first place. And please thank the person who you got it from. I hope they know how happy this has made so so many people!

Stephen - 1/31/2017 at 06:15 PM

This whole thread brightens my day -- spreading the religion Duane spoke of the night before he died (in Red Dog's recollections) -- not since the 1997 uncovering of 9/16/71 Warehouse such an exciting find
in P,L & no tech, it doesn't play when I click & makes no diff anyway as the living room stereo is where I listen to music -- hopefully it makes its way to the trades section
Again P&L -- this show arriving w/the brother's departure......RIP, bro Butch

AlPaul - 1/31/2017 at 09:04 PM

Thanks to everyone involved in finding these tapes and making them available. I'm really enjoying the show this week.

If someone wants to burn CDs for Kirk, he'd appreciate it. Just spoke to him.

adhill58 - 1/31/2017 at 09:28 PM

I am the first one on the (snail mail) vine, I should get the show tonight. Can make and send CDs for Kirk. PM sent

anthonyspare - 2/1/2017 at 11:06 PM

Hey everybody,
This week has been a hiatus for me since I have started a new job. On a brighter note, "you know what" came in the mail today from George. Here is what I want to do...
Due to the size of the file I am having a lot of trouble uploading the show to the web so Im feeling generous and have decided to send out several copies to get this out as quick as possible instead of the traditional vine we had decided on with the mp3 version. I hope to get them all out in the mail by Friday and Saturday.

So far I will have a copy going to the following people. 3 spots left.

1. Wayne Knight
2. thetoweringfool
3. JayinPa (I NEED ADDRESS!)
4. fanfrom-71 (I NEED ADDRESS!)
5. Marco (I NEED ADDRESS!)
6. Colin
7. Bob (I NEED ADDRESS!)
8. Stephen (I NEED ADDRESS!)
9. BobMeader (I NEED ADDRESS!)
10.
11.
12.

I would also like to send a copy to Masahiko (I sent him a PM but havent heard back yet), Alan, and Kirk if I can get their contact info.

Thanks.

Anthony, thank you so much again for sharing great recording.
And I'm sorry of my delayed response to the PM you sent me.
Just replied to you right now with my full address.

I've started checking the specific of the mp3 source for preparing start new project.
Basic equalization curve is almost finished to work out.
After I received the wav/flac files, I will apply this curve to it and do a little more consideration for better result.

Also thank you to Colin and Steve aka oldcoot for sending me the heads up messages.
Much appreciated.

Y'all the BEST!

tommars - 2/3/2017 at 10:48 PM

wow ! Where was this set hiding ? Maybe it's the timing but this could be my favorite of all the 1970 sound boards I've heard. There's different stuff than usual happening during liz reed to my ears. For one reason or another, wether it's sound quality or performance, I usually go right to 71 shows but this is really cool.

TheBabe714 - 2/4/2017 at 08:33 AM

I really loved reading this post, Thank you to everyone for all the work put into making this happen and all the extra information posted as well. It's been tuff lately so Thanks again.
I would love to get this, If anyone would like to do a b&p or trade for the flac/wav please let me know.
Thanks again to everyone, enjoy the music~ Peace

BrerRabbit - 2/4/2017 at 03:59 PM

shane-o - 2/5/2017 at 03:22 AM

someone might have already said this but Duane does a great lift of "the age of aquarius" at the start of his solo on liz reed....one of the best lifts of that song I ever heard him do

shane-o - 2/5/2017 at 03:27 AM

l they had just played the Atlanta pop festival and its right before the love valley festival....I think Duane did age of aquarius at atllanta but that crazy double bends him a dickie do on liz reed in the middles of his solo I never heard that AMAZINGLY UPLIFTING FIND

pops42 - 2/5/2017 at 04:06 PM

Duane quotes Chuck Berry in his IMOER solo [right before drum break].

RAB - 2/6/2017 at 11:35 AM

Still enjoying the MP3 version of this which does sound very nice. Unfortunately I'm one of those darned audiophiles BrerRabbit mentioned. Any chance of getting a vine or other means of distribution for the uncompressed, .wav version?

harvey - 2/6/2017 at 05:28 PM

Masahiko is going to re-master the WAV version so may be best to wait for that to go on a vine ?

IMHO Colin is right. Let's all enjoy the mp3s for the time being and patiently await Masahiko's re-mastering. And then we can all vine, swap, dropbox, snailmail etc. the "definite" version of this great find.

P.S.... So this was listened to the for the 1st time in 47 years (other than George G.) by me on 1/24/17 when I got home from work around 5PM. Two significant ABB events occurred between the hours of 5pm and 6pm on 1/24/17. This show surfaced and we had the Butch tragedy. Such an eerie feeling knowing that I was listening to this while the Butch event was likely taking place. Just an eerie side note I wanted to share.

I got a copy already so feel free to pass me by. Thanks

I just downloaded this, converted to a WAV file and tested for MP3 with Traders Little Helper. It told me 95% probability that it was an MP3 source. I also noticed that the 285MB file size was rather small for this show. Is there a true WAV>FLAC that I'm missing?

Marley - 2/12/2017 at 07:17 PM

This is a cool performance! An unique setlist, two songs with unusual endings, and three of my very favorite ABB songs in a short show. I wouldn't have thought there was any more undiscovered Duane stuff out there. What a great surprise at a hard time for ABB fans.

anthonyspare - 2/14/2017 at 07:15 PM

Someone had mentioned a possible edit in Whipping Post at 10:38 in this thread but now I cant find the post. If you listen carefully you can hear a constant timbale beat by Jaimoe that starts around 10:30ish, this continues into Mountain Jam intro pretty seamlessly and the tempo seems pretty consistent. I DO agree that it is an odd Whipping Post ending but definitely NOT an edit. I hope everyone has received discs by now!

Marley - 2/14/2017 at 07:59 PM

I posted that maybe there was an edit because of the way the drums dropped out, but I listened another time or two and decided I was wrong. So I deleted the post. They do silence their cymbals kind of quickly, I think, but you can tell from Butch's tympani playing and the other changes in the lyrics and arrangement that they were definitely playing a short arrangement of Whipping Post with a quick transition into Mountain Jam. I wonder if they played it that way during other short warm-up gigs. I didn't know they ever played it that way but it sounds well-rehearsed.

Agreed, exactly what I was thinking. Yes, Butch's timpani, not Jaimoe's timbales like I stated incorrectly above. Like you mention, I have never heard it anywhere else like they play it here.

Joe_the_Lurker - 2/16/2017 at 06:37 PM

Thanks Anthony or Bob_o or whoever put up that download link!

I've only listened to a couple songs and it sounds so good. I've grown up with Derek as I'm about his age and I think he's the best in the world and what he does. That being said, it's amazing how hearing a Duane solo for the first time puts a smile on my face that just doesn't happen with Derek's solos. With Derek, it's more like a "hell yes, that was awesome!" and with Duane, it's more like "man I FEEL fantastic after hearing that!"

BrerRabbit - 2/17/2017 at 06:39 PM

Ok, well I can't send Jimi, can't risk getting busted at Greenwood Memorial, but I will come up with someting.

First trial has finished but I found serious problem with it, input volume seems to be changed by recorder a few times after Whipping Post started, so I trashed it and started again.
I can only work out on weekend because my office work is very very busy but I think I can release my remaster within a couples of week or so.
Please wait for some more time.

Please excuse my very delayed "Thank You!". The past few weeks have been crazy for me. I did receive them and put them up with the rest of my memorabilia. I hope everyone is still enjoying the show, and I like forward to hearing Masahiko's remaster! I've been trying to get back in touch with source (George Geranios) to see about possibility of acquiring reel-to-reel tapes!

BrerRabbit - 3/15/2017 at 05:42 PM

Whoa you mean the LOST STONYBROOK REELS? Amazing. Good luck with that. We may have to start a little foundation to get that off the runway. Count me in! I want to hear stonybrook Mountain , Doors, Hendrix, Joplin, Airplane and so on.

Ah, that would be amazing. Not sure what all he has on-hand but I know for a fact that these 7-9-70 Stony Brook .WAVs are from his personal set of 1/4" mono tapes, which are likely the originals or a copy of originals.

LucaB12 - 3/22/2017 at 01:38 PM

did the original WAV files get passed around? The one track of the remaster sounded amazing

harvey - 3/22/2017 at 10:54 PM

Masahiko is putting the finishing touches to his re-master ... should be with you all soon ...

mikesolo - 3/22/2017 at 11:21 PM

Anthony, please check your PM.
I've finished my work and send you a DL link.
Thanks!

Masahiko if the rest of the show sounds as good as what you did for Dreams then we are in for a treat. A great sounding show from the original 6. Thank you so much for all your efforts and sharing with us all. I cannot wait to hear this show after you've done your magic.

eap,
Steve

Following is the sample of final remaster - Dreams.mp3

My soundcloud account room is full, so it's a dropbox link.

Just amazing what you've done. Can't wait to get this. Hopefully Anthony will get this out to us soon. Wow!

salcapitano - 3/30/2017 at 01:51 AM

Dreams sounds great. I'm curious how it went down the line, ala Whipping Post. Thanks for your work and time with this. I don't know if people really understand how much time, cursing, saying forget it, it can't be done goes into making these re-masters. I remember talking to Skip about what went into making these re -masters. It's a lot of work. Thanks Masa for carrying on the tradition.

LucaB12 - 3/30/2017 at 11:49 AM

If anyone could post Track 3-the end via Dropbox or some other service that would be awesome. Great job remastering the show. Sounds so much better.

ABBDutchFan - 3/30/2017 at 06:12 PM

Kudos to Masahiko for the hard work! Much obliged!

Wayne - 3/30/2017 at 07:33 PM

Sounds great Masahiko! Both Dreams and Midnight Rider sounds so much richer and fuller than before, Berry sounds great your mix. Commercial quality if I say so myself! Looking forward to being able to download WP/MJ!

Yippeeeee!!!!!

FWerner - 4/1/2017 at 01:02 AM

Sounds great. I sent a copy to a friend that used to do a blues show at WUSB Stony Brook. This could be heard on campus soon.

BrerRabbit - 4/5/2017 at 05:55 PM

No doubt, listening again right now, this Masahiko remaster is unfrekin real! Gregg's vox are perfect, just oversaturated to the ripping point. He is right there in the room. This is an amazing record.

jonsawyer - 4/12/2017 at 10:49 PM

All,

Can somebody upgrade me to FLAC on this? I can do B&P or trade or I have Dropbox. Please hook a brother up!

Many thanks in advance!

Peace, Jon Sawyer

jonsawyer - 4/12/2017 at 10:55 PM

Never mind, I found Mr. Harvey 's links, many many thanks!

anthonyspare - 7/9/2019 at 09:29 PM

Haven’t been here in a while, Brothers and Sisters. Hope everyone gives the Stony Brook show a listen today. I posted in ABB Facebook group today so hopefully it reached some new ears. Y’all on Facebook?
