Eatin' a Peach at The Avalon Ballroom
The boys never cease to amaze. In Niagara on Friday night the Bros. put on a spectacular display to a crowd of 1500 in one of the best rooms, sound quality wise that I have ever been in. While all of us like the big outdoor nice sunny day ABB extravaganza, this show was Beaconesque with the only concern being the length. We are all used to the three hour plus ABB. On Friday the show went for a little over two.
We were third row dead centre, (note, someone was right behind me with a nice recording set-up, there should be some good tape from this show!) and we were absolutely blown away by the sound quality, and how tight the Bros were.
Greg was in what seemed a great mood and was very talkative all evening. His voice was in great form and he seemed to jam out a little more than usual on his B3.
Warren was just simply hot! I think the fact that Derek has been touring with EC and now back with the Bros. got his juices flowing. Which brings me to Derek - apparently doing a bunch of shows with Clapton and his all star band is good for the ABB. I have been following his progress since 94 when I first saw him play in Daytona as a 13 year old. His playing on Friday, and I am sure Sat., was incredible. The licks were not any different from the past other than he seemed very relaxed and his whole sound was incredibly polished. Liz Reed was a highlight for me and I am sure the entire crowd. The interplay and harmonics were on the money, and most noticeable were the smiles on Greg, Warren and Derek as the tune went on.
Last but not least was the set-list (see below). This show was put together for the fans. A 1500 seater with great acoustics that the Bros. had never played before seemed like the perfect place to settle into a set that they wanted to play and the Peach Corps would be happy to groove to. No one sat the entire evening. Highlights, cool version of Done Somebody Wrong, Come and Go Blues was DT highlight for me and as mentioned Liz Reed was hairaising! Greg's vocal on Midnight Rider was bang on! Nice bluesy version of Into the Mystic and a rockin' version of One Way Out as the encore was the capper on a great set.
After the show, in the Casino, my wife had a nice chat with DT at the bar for about 5 mins before he was spotted by a gaggle of the PC's and surrounded. She said he was in a great mood and was looking forward to Sat night and the summer shows with the Bros and the DTB. We also spotted Oteil in the concourse and Butch in the lobby. The entire band seemed very accessible and laid back on Friday it was very civilized.
I give the show a 5 outta 5 and it rekindled my desire to go Peakin' at the Beacon this coming March as it has been a few years since I last went. Thanks for getting to the Great White North this year boys, see ya at Darien Lake in August!
