Nothing could be Sweeter: At the Tweeter 7/13/03
Last year at the Tweeter, the Brothers were still reaching for the chemistry that crystallized this past spring at the Beacon...this year's Massachusetts show contained no transcendant moments, but plenty of brilliant ones nonethless: opeing with "Layla" was startling pure and simple, Derek soloing with all the finesse at his command; Warren now solos, as he did so furiously on "Dreams," with the complexity of Derek; Gregg sang with an abandon that was startling at times and this night's jaunty version "Ain't Wastin' Time No More" was a revelation; "Desdemona" could be a monumental showpiece if they stretched it out further, but "Instrumental Illness" is that showpiece now, leaving previously recorded versions behind; and the sound was superior to last year so that when Oteil hit the rumbling intro to "Whipping Post," it resounded with all the authority it demands. As with the other seven ABB shows I've attended, it takes some time for all the music to sink in, but just the moments I've noted above--plus the fact the percussion section continues to astound-- are memorable enough to have me planning for Beacon 2004 and beyond!
