The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down

Virgil Keane is my name,
and I served on a danville train,

When Sherman's cavalry came and tore up the tracks again.
In the winter of '65 we was hungry, just barely alive.
On May 10th when Richmond had fell - it was a night I remember oh so well....

The night they drove old dixie down...
and all the bells were ringin,
The night they drove old dixie down...
and all the people were singin...
they went...Naaa Na Na Na Na Na
Na Na NaNa NaNA NaNa Na

Back with my wife in Tennessee, one day she called to me,
Virgil, quick, come see, there goes the Robert E. Lee,
and I don't mind choppin' wood, and I don't care if the money's no good.
Take what you need, and leave the rest....
but you never take on the very beesst...

The night they drove old dixie down,
and all the bells were ringin',
The night they drove old dixie down,
and all the people were singin',
They went:
Naaa Na Na Na Na Na
Na Na NaNa NaNa NaNa Na.

Like my father before me, I'm a workin' man
Like my brother before me, I took the rebel stand.
He was just 18, he was proud and brave,
Killed A Yankee, Laid him in his grave....

I swear by the mud beneath my feet, you can't raise the cain back up when he's in defeat...

The night they drove old dixie down,
and all the bells were ringin',
The night they drove old dixie down,
and all the people were singin',
They went:
Naaa Na Na Na Na Na
Na Na NaNa NaNa NaNa Na

The night they drove old dixie down,
and all the bells were ringin',
The night they drove old dixie down,
and all the people were singin',
They went:
Naaa Na Na Na Na Na
Na Na NaNa NaNa NaNa Na

My score:

A couple corrections. Virgil CAIN is the song's main attraction; you can't raise a Cain back up when he's in defeat. Also, it's not Sherman's cavalry; Sherman was a Union officer that had nothing to do with the Cavalry; the correct officer and lyric is Stoneman; a Union Cavalry officer who drove the Rebels nuts with his attacks on their rail system. Good effort though...hoping they play "The Weight" at tonight or Friday night's show...
