Answer
·  What kind of gear does Oteil use?

On "Love of a Lifetime" Oteil played his signature semi-hollow Modulus Quantum 6 with Lane Poor passive JJ pickups; his Quantum 5 and fretless Quantum 6 (both with EMG active
pickups); and his Kydd Carry-On electric upright. All basses were recorded direct.

With the Allman Brothers Band he plays a stock '90s Fender Jazz Bass with an oversize, medium-gauge triangular pick; an Alvarez Wildwood 4070 4-string acoustic bass guitar for the "unplugged" set; and his Modulus 6 for his solo spot. His strings are D'Addarios: Slowounds for his 6-strings, XL5s for the 5, and flatwound Chromes for his Kydd,
Fender, and Alvarez; gauges .032, .045,
.065, .080, .100, .130.

Live with the Aquarium Rescue Unit and the Peacemakers, Oteil plugs into an Ampeg SVT-CL head and an SVT810E cabinet.

When truckin' with the Allmans, he carries two SVT-4 Pro heads with two side-by-side stacks, each containing an SVT410HLF on top of an SVTPR-15H. His current effects
include a Morley PBA Wah and a Boss OC-2 Octave pedal.

... all subject to change based on his muse!

·  How did Oteil start to play Little Martha in his bass solo?

Oteil says, "There was a time when every night before I went to bed I'd listen to 'Little Martha,'" he said. "It's just such a soothing song, so peaceful. It's funny, I still don't know why they removed the bass line from the ("Eat A Peach") version. It's really beautiful what Berry did in there.'

"Anyway, one morning I woke up and for some reason I woke up to that melody and my first thought was, 'I wonder if there's a way to figure this out on the bass.' When I finally figured it out, I went into soundcheck. Dickey and Gregg and those guys never do soundcheck, so I just played it for the crew, basically. And I asked Bud Snyder what he thought. He said he loved it, but he also said, 'I can see how Dickey is not gonna like that.'

"But I decided to do it anyway. And that first night, I was so scared. I mean, I was scared just to pull the six-string out. But I did it, and Dickey, well, he loved it, which is really what I was shooting for. And the crowd reaction - I was never prepared for how overwhelmingly positive it was."

·  Did anyone from the band ever play with Stevie Ray Vaughan?

While the Brothers never played with SRV, there are a couple of connections... Reese Wynans (keyboard player for Double Trouble) lived in the same FSU dorm as the members of the 31st of February and, while Gregg was fulfilling contractual obligations in California, was the keyboard player for the second incarnation of the Second Coming (featuring Duane, Berry, Butch, Jaimoe, Dickey, and Reese).

·  Who was Elizabeth Reed?

Elizabeth Reed the person has no connection to the Allman Brothers Band. Dickey simply saw her name on a grave site in Rose Hill cemetery, liked it and used it as the name of a song he's already written. For a virtual tour of Rose Hill

·  How was the album Eat a Peach named?

First off, the rumor that it was named because Duane crashed into a peach truck is false. The art for the album was done before Duane died. The line "Eat A Peach for Peace" was what Duane told a Rolling Stone interviewer when asked what he'd do for the revolution, "There ain't no revolution, only evolution, but every time I'm in Georgia I eat a peach for peace." The original name was going to be Eat A Peach for Peach, but it was shortened. Before Duane died, the working title of the album was "The Kind They Grow in the South."

According to Butch, "
Yep, I know.....I was there.....in fact I suggested naming it Eat a Peach For Peace....It was shortened to Eat a Peach.. It goes like this: I walked into Phil Walden's (President of Capricorn Records) office and he pulls out this great art work for the record we're working on. The cover has this giant peach on it and the title they had was "The Kind We Grow in Dixie" I told Phil the art work's great but the title sucks and suggested using the quote from the interview that Duane had done just before his death. Peace."

·  How did the song Jessica get its name?

Dickey started out by trying to create a melody that could be played with only 2 fingers (a la Django Reinhardt) and as he was fiddling about with a couple of the happier sounding lines he found, he got caught up in watching his daughter (Jessica) playing, and presto - inspiration and song.

·  Gregg plays the Hammond B3 organ. How does it work?

The "big brown thing" behind the Hammond B3 organ is a Leslie speaker. These speakers are also referred to as "rotating Leslies," although I personally don't know of any non-rotating Leslie speakers. Leslie is a brand name like Lego. Only one company, to my knowledge, makes them. They are still in production today and they are commonly mated with Hammond organs (although Hammond B3 organs are no longer manufactured, as far as I know).

All Leslie speakers have internal motors, but different Leslies work in different ways. In some, the speaker elements themselves rotate. In others, the speaker elements are fixed in place inside of a spinning cylinder which has a hole in it. Basically, the Leslie speaker gives an organ that pulsating effect. Most organs have switches installed on them so that the player can turn the motor on and off.

You will hear Gregg alternating between having the motor on and off. An experienced organ player will be able to manipulate the on/off switch quite well. IMO, Gregg's great ability as an organ player comes more from his sense of feel, which includes his ability to manipulate the Leslie speaker, than it does from his dexterity. If you can't differentiate between the sounds, listen in particular to "Get On With Your Life" from "Evening With . . . First Set" to hear Gregg turn the speaker's motor on and off. Another example is on "Mountain Jam," where on the "Circle" or "waltz" section of "Fillmore Concerts" MJ, the motor is off, while on the very end, the motor is on. [Joseph Charles Kelly]

The original mechanical "tonewheel generator" HAMMOND's were produced from 1935 through until 1975. Gregg's model B-3 (and essentially similar C-3) were the latest and BEST of all HAMMOND tonewhell generator models and easily the favorite among professional HAMMOND players. They were produced from 1955 to the end of tonewheel production late 1974 / early 1975.

Rights to the original "HAMMOND Organ Company" name were purchased by HAMMOND-Suzuki around 1990 or so. They currently produce several new HAMMOND-Suzuki organs, including the XB-3 which looks in many ways like the original B-3, but it's digital, full MIDI and like all other organs produced after 1975, does NOT contain a tonewheel generator.

The classic HAMMOND B-3 is just that; a classic piece of equipment. The new XB-3 is a high-technology version which in many ways sounds like a B-3 and features many innovative improvements. But like the Ford Mustang, a classic 1969 is much different than a new 1998. Performance-wise, the original B-3 and original Mustang are in a class of their own.

Gregg's B-3's and Leslie 122's have been upgraded with "new" parts to maintain the classic sound in much the same way a classic car owner would restore an original Mustang. During the rebuilding of Gregg's equipment, we carefully restored the original performance, but we did NOT sacrifice the classic sound. [AL GOFF, href="http://www.goffprof.com">Click

·  Where did the inspiration for the song 'Melissa' come from?

Gregg had written most of the song but didn't have a name for it. Inspiration struck when he went to the grocery store and heard a mother calling after her young daughter, "Melissa, come back! Melissa!"

·   I have been a HUGE Allmans fan for over 30 years, and now thinking about taking guitar lessons. Obviously will be playing the Brothers tunes and blues. What brand/model guitars did Duane play on tour?

Primarily 1957 Les Pauls although there are pictures from the band's early days where Duane can be seen playing a Gibson ES330 as well as a 1954 Fender Stratocaster. Butch has said Duane was playing the Strat when the mud throwing occured at Love Valler (July '70). Later he used a Gibson SG (Dickey's) for slide, starting about May/June '71.

·  Duane's guitar appears to be a
cherry sunburst Les Paul. Do you
know the year and the model? Did he use
the standard actory pickups with the
covers on them?

Thanks,
Dave Warren

Duane used a couple of different 1957 Les Pauls. The cherry red & tobacco sunburst starting in the middle of '71. Duane had been playing the goldie Les Paul up until around Sept. '70 when he bought a new red 1957 from Christopher Cross. Yup, that guy, Sail On. But first he took the pickups out of goldie and installed them into the newly purchased 1957 Les Paul. One of the Les Paul's (believed to be the tobacco sunburst) came through Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. BTW, goldie was used on Layla.

·  Who are the people inside the Brothers and Sisters album?

Courtesy of Red Dog:
Somebody ask me to name the people on the inside of Brothers and Sisters. I will give it a go. Everybody knows I can not spell good so you will have to do the best you can in picking up on the names, plus there are a couple that I can not remember. I should but thirty years is a long time. Standing left to right (back row). This is a friend of Jaimoe's. You will have to get him to tell you the name. I know he is a friend of Ela May Avery who is standing next to him. (Ela is the wife of Jackie Avery. A song writer and very good friend of Jaimoe's). Next to her is Brother Lamar Williams, then Mike Arts (Butch's brother-in-law at that time), Joan Callahan with Rachel, Mike Callahan, Mike's dog, Jaimoe, Charles Binyoun ( not sure of the spelling). Next row. Brother Butch with Vaylor, Scott Boyer, Linda Trucks with Melody, I can't remember the lady's name but Butch can tell you. Brother Chuck Leavell, my god child Brittany Oakley standing between Chuck and Linda Oakley, Linda is sitting next to Chuck, between her and brother Twiggs is Judy Petty, she was going with brother Twiggs at that time. Candy Oakley, Brother Kim Payne, in front of Kim is Kay Phillips holding Tuffy's daughter, sitting next to Brother Tuffy Phillips, behind Tuffy and next to Kim is Buffalo Evan's lady at that time (I should remember her name but it just will not come to me), next to her is The Buffalo, sitting next toTuffy is Brother Gregg, then my wife Bunkie, Brother Willy Perkins is next to Buffalo, I am next with Sandra Perkins between me and Brother Dickey, then Brother Joe Dan. In front of Gregg is Janis Allman with her daughter. Sitting dead center is Dareing Howl. Dareing is a good friend of Gregg's. Dickey's dog is in front of Dareing. Hope this helps.

·   Back in the very early 70s, I saw the band play live, with Duane, on one of those late night TV concerts. Is there any concert footage of the band, with Duane and Berry, which can be availabe to the fans?

There is no commercial footage available of the original band in concert. There is precious little footage in collectors' hands; about 35 minutes that was taped but never shown on television, from 9/23/70 at the Fillmore East; about 90 minutes from Love Valley, 7/70, most of which has no sound; and a couple of extremely bad quality audience movies from Central Park, NY. The ABB does not authorize trading of video footage so we are unable to help you obtain this.

·  Where can i find a list of all the best abb performances so i know which live recordings to look for?

We have no "top performance" list as such at this point, although it's a great idea. For now, there are comments with many of the live shows (click Live Show DB in the Menu block) that will give you a sense of what people thought. With over 900 shows available in trading circles, the list of "bests" is pretty long! You may also consider checking the tape trader sections in the Forum, or start a thread on "Best Performances" and see what gets posted.

·  I know that Duane used a Marshall stacks but what was some of the important things he used to get his sound? Other than his Les Pauls and SG in open tunings

In addition to frequently changing the pickup's positions (top, bottom, or both together) he also liked to use a fuzz box with
the batteries nearly dead so they produced a very soft round fuzz.

·  Does the ABB allow electronic online trading of their shows?

No. The ABB have long been on record as being against electronic file sharing.

·  Please bear with me, I'm only trying to do things right....Does the FAQ answer below mean that electronic files sent by mail are OK? (not online) Does this apply to person-to-person "etrades"?(where you send a specific person the electronic files?) Thanks for your patience & help! William" Does the ABB allow electronic online trading of their shows?

No. The ABB do not support trading of this type at all.

Why?

It's a great time and a challenging time for artists. Most of us do something to pay the rent. Consider if your boss could download what you do from the Internet for free and pay you nothing. I think for most of us this would be a rather scary thought.

The ABB originally bought into the idea of tape trading because it is one-to-one, no money changes hands, and with each trade the tape quality declines, so the amount of first rate source material for bootleggers in theory is not that great.

We all know that technology has marched on and with DAT's and CDR's, the ABB has had to accept that the quality of shows generally does not decline with successive trades, but at least it's still one-to-one and most traders are not going to knowingly trade with a commercial bootlegger.

Now enter FTP -- the last protection from widespread, free distribution of the ABB's intellectual property, from one source to unlimited destinations, goes away.

While I am a technologist and the idea of downloading files and burning CD's is great to me, I totally respect the ABB's feelings about their intellectual property and their decision to not allow electronic file sharing of their music. In fact, I am grateful that they still support fans sharing music and support a tape trading section here on their official site -- keep in mind that MOST artists do not do this!

·  What was the band's first few songs that were written and played, and who wrote them?

·  What was the inspiration in composing Little Martha? I interpret it sometimes as a sweet melody, other times as a sad exchange of emotion between two people.

Duane said Little Martha came to him in a dream.

·  I play drums as a hobby, and I have a chance to join an Allman Brothers Tribute Band here in north Texas. I want to use vintage gear for more accurate reproduction of that early ABB live sound, so can you tell me what kind of drums and cymbals Butch and Jaimoe were using when the "Live at Fillmore East" album was recorded?

Butch says: "I was playing an old set of Gretsch (sp?). 22" BD with the front head off and a pillow inside. 2 rack toms 12" & 13", and a 16" floor tom. I used a 22" A Zildjian ,edium ride cymbal and 2 18" medium thin A Zildjian crash cymbals along with a "slpash" (size I don't remember) cymabl. A pair of normal sized tympani and that's it. BTW they were black :-)"

·  I am about the pull the trigger re purchasing the archival releases, but I need to know a few things. What are the sources of the ABB archival releases? Are these from the private band sources or are they from tweaked bootleg versions? I have the booted versions of both shows and I am wondering if the sound is significant better.

The shows are audience tapes from the archives.

·  Is any touring to Germany planned in near future?

There have been rumblings that a trip to Europe may be on the horizon. No solid plans for one are in place at this time.

·  I understand, Instant Live, recorded and burned some of the recent shows at some venues. And sold them after the show. Are any of these shows still available for purchase, or can they be ordered?

The Instant Live CDs are not available for purchase at this time. If that changes we'll share the happy news as soon as we receive it.

·  Are the live sbd recordings of this summers tour going to be available outside of the venue itself? I\'ve been searching but can\'t find any links to buy them.

We are looking into this but there is no definite timeline or commitment to do so yet.

·  Can I trade the ABB's Instant Live CD's?

No.

Please consider this: the Allman Brothers Band are simply not in a position to grant you the right to copy a commercial CD of their shows, such as Instant Live. ABB shows often contain material licensed from other artists, such as Willie Dixon. To tell you that you could copy a commercial release would be to tell you that you can infringe on another artist's copyrighted material.

"But other bands are doing this!" you say? If that's the case, then those other bands are exposing themselves to infringement lawsuits by suggesting that it is OK for you to copy another artist's intellectual property.

·  Am I mistaken, or is there an aversion to playing songs from "Reach", "Rogues" and "Bros of the Road"? Is this considered a down period musically? Lots of good tunes that don't seem to appear in setlists.....

The Allman Brothers Band has a huge catalog of material to draw set lists from and these have just not bubbled to the top yet.

·  I am a huge fan of Duane and the Allman Brothers Band. I was wondering what tunings Duane used for his guitar. Open E, other open tunings, or did he ever play in standard? Also, what brand of slide did he play with? Thanks.

Duane used Open E for his slide work and played in standard tuning when not playing slide. He used a Corcidin cold medicine bottle as a slide.

·  Is it true that a new album is out from the 1970's, from another place besides the Fillmore?

The most recent Allman Brothers Band archival CD release, Stonybrook 9/19/71, contains what many fans have called the best versions of Dreams and Blue Sky ever captured live by the original band. The first ABB archive release, American University 12/13/70, is another superb early recording... and it was the ABB's manager, Bert Holman's first show! Both are available at http://www.hittinthenote.com
